Hello, I am trying to shed some light on why my grandfather whom I never met left his home in Wayne Co., PA in 1875 at age 18 to become a mercenary soldier in Mexico for a time. That's all the info I have. He later moved to Colorado working as a carpenter and prospector in Durango, Trimble, Silverton.
I am really quite curious about this--what would have been his motive, what kind of information did he receive that persuaded him, was it just an adventure, was it a concern for the Texans, did Texas advertise in eastern papers for soldiers to help protect their borders so it was good for him financially when it was hard to find work in northern PA at that time??? Thanks for any insight.
