Some of mine are stored away, but I have quite a lot of them in display cases (curio cabinets) with small card labels giving information about them. I try to group them by the person or family group that owned or used htem, and others by the time period they are from. In one case of a great great grandfather, I have a degerotype image of him, his pipe and a tooled leather wallet. I have a silver compact that belonged to his wife and a photo of the house built by her father.
I have "scanned" most of the items that are paper or photos and put copies of the scan files onto CDs which I have in a fireproof safe. For most of the old handwritten letters, I have also typed up a transscription which makes it easier for someone viewing to read the content that is often hard to make out in faint ink or elaborate writing styles of the day.
One special item that was passed down to my cousin, was loaned to me so I could scan it and put copies on CDs making it available to others. It is a hard bound book of handwritten notes by my 3rd great grandfather who was a medical student in Philadelphia in 1828. It is rather fragile and ussually safely kept in a clear plastic box made to hold it safe. The CD with images of its pages and photos of the exterior, along with a bio of its owner a picture of him, can be easily duplicated and shared with those who want to view it.
