Yep, they want to be found.

I think this is such a great topic! I myself have always enjoyed this aspect of genealogy.

I've had several instances where I've felt "guided" to find an individual. I always laugh and say, "there you go. We found you."

The funniest one to me, though, is recent. I've had family members who were "genealogists" and whose work I've inherited after they passed on. But I've always been stuck in the same spot they left me, and when I try to get further, I never can. Then, in the last two years I've had several family members (who weren't into genealogy at all) pass on, as well as a dear cousin who collaborated with me as we tried to crumble the brickwalls surrounding a 4th great-grandmother. It was so fun working together on that, and I miss her terribly. So not long ago, after being stuck (very stuck) in the same place on my Thomas line, I was able to find confirmation that a man I suspected was my 3rd great-grandfather's brother indeed was. And his bio mentioned the names I had suspected were their parents. Then, on a whim, I searched and found the will extract for his father! Using that, I was able to find siblings I never knew about, etc. And then the paper trail took me back to the Rev. David Thomas, a prominent Baptist preacher from PA who went to VA, and eventually settled in Jessamine Co., KY, and died there. So I was pondering if my dear cousin had shown me the way, but if she had, why the Thomas line? She and I had never discussed that branch. Then I had the funniest thought... I think it was my mother-in-law. You see, she was the wife of a Baptist preacher... and when I married into the family, I was Catholic, which caused some "tension." So I think it was my mother-in-law, trying to show me, "See?! You're supposed to be Baptist!" It makes a lot of sense to me! ;)

I personally believe genealogists are chosen. Nobody in my family understands why I feel compelled to do this, and I can't explain why I can't "just stop." I just wish more of those folks who have passed on wanted to be found!

grandma's guidance?

I have always been drawn to finding out about my paternal grandparents and my paternal family in general. My dad was in his 50's when I was born and had been orphaned at 13. He never talked in specifics about his family aside from his parents' names, so I knew very little, and he died in 1982. I had always felt a very strong bond to my grandmother, Mary Heeney (Hanney) Mahoney.

In 1985, my husband, son, and I took a driving trip to western New York to visit in-laws, and I decided I wanted to drive across to Portsmouth, NH where I knew my grandparents were buried. I had never been to NH and didn't know the name of the cemetary. We camped a few miles from Portsmouth that night and I noticed on the map there were two ways into Portsmouth. I opted for the north road but my husband took a wrong turn and ended up coming in from the south. We passed a large cemetary named Calvary on the way in. Later we passed a different cemetary. We stopped at a store and asked which was the Catholic cemetary. The lady laughed and said "Oh, everyone here is Catholic!" When we told her what we were looking for she said it was most likely Calvary cemetary we wanted. Coincidence number one.

We drove to Calvary and looked for what appeared to be the older section. My husband parked along the path and I told him to drive farther up so as not to block the way. He ignored me and left the car where it was. I then proceeded to walk the area south of the car while he and our son walked the north side. We had no luck and it was getting late.

I was so disappointed, thinking I wouldn't have another chance to get back to NH. I stood with my back to the car door and looked across the cemetary, where my husband and son had looked and found nothing. I found myself looking DIRECTLY at my grandparents' tombstone! Coincidence number 2!

The weird things were, that my husband and son had completely missed it, and if my husband had parked the car farther up, even by a few feet, my view would have been blocked by other tombstones and I'd have never seen it! It seems like my grandmother wanted us to find them, and wanted it to be me who did the finding. I felt her spirit very strongly during that whole trip!

I feel very strongly that our relatives want to be found and remembered. Since that time I have found more about my dad's family than he himself probably ever knew. I think they are all helping me, but especially my grandmother who I always seemed to be obsessed with, without knowing why!

yes my son had that experience he was lookig for his great grandma and there was something driven for him to look for her. He kept insisting in his mind and heart and finally found her resting place and the strange thing was there was no marking or stone to identufy her gravebut my son kept asking the grounds keeper or assistance and he found her. I am so proud of him to keep searching and it bought closure to my heart. I think that this was meant to be and my grandmother helped to find her. Thank God for angels.

Can the dead come back to check on us?

I'm beginning to think that with all my rooting around in my family tree, I'm stirring up something. Maybe the veil between this world and the next is getting thinner. Let me start off by saying that we have lived in our current house for 10 years with no strange phenomena. 3 days ago I was getting ready for work in our 2nd story bathroom, and heard voices that sounded soft and melodious - no one was around. Then 2 days ago, I was in the laundry room and heard a deep male voice (not at all like my husband's voice) - again no one was around. Then last night I was sitting at the computer and I swear I smelled a pipe with sweet tobacco for about a minute. No body smokes in our house, and no candles were lit. I felt a bit uncomfortable at first, then I got to thinking that maybe some of my ancestors that I've been reading about are checking in on me. Then it was kinda neat.
I am very interested in knowing the names of the people in the cemetary you spoke of. My husband has ancestors that were in that area and Some of mine I know to be close. Congradulations on the find and the wonder of having connections with the past. I believe one day in heaven we might be able to know those gone before. If not, the joy of being comforted by their times here, is very good
ceim2634

Also recently I was told to pray to the ancestor who was my brick wall and ask them to help me find what I needed to research them. Within two days I had a break. Out of the clear blue I got an email answer from her cemetery that included the address she lived in when she died so for the heck of it I did a google search on the address and 1937 the year she died and wham there was her house in an online article called the forgotten new york and its a walking tour around brooklyn and other ny areas. He even did a walk through her cemetery and took pictures. I was in heaven I sat here and cried. She died before I was born and my father was only a boy when she died so it was a real honor and I felt like I was meeting her for the first time.

I have done the exact same thing. Went to Mt. Airy NC and loved it so much wanted to move there. This was back in the 60s I kept saying when I graduate I am going to live her. Then after Graduation went to Mt. Airy and Hillsville VA to visit.

I cannot describe the feeling I had but it was like you said coming home. This was in 1973. I started my family history in 1979 and guess where one of the first places was I had to research. Hillsville VA and Mt Airy NC. I was so shocked and scared at first it almost made me want to quit. But instead I was more determined.

Now when we are traveling and that feeling comes over me I immediately take out the notebook I keep in my purse and write down where we are in case I come across it in my research.

My family also believes you keep coming back. I sure hope I am on my last trip. Im tired now.

Hi: I am looking for info about my grandmother Katherine Paetzold. She was born in 1910 and was taken as a child to Hope Farm/Greer School in NY. This was an orphanage for disadvantaged children. She never talked about her past or her family. She fell in love and married Martin Carstens and had a wonderful life. I would love to find "the link". If any of this sounds familiar, please contact me.

Thanks you,
Cathy Dabbs

You reminded me once again about that day. One of those cemeteries where my gr grandparents were buried. It was sooo very hot and my uncle drove around the cemetery roads for several minutes while I think we were mustering up the courage to get out in the heat again. I said just stop here and let me out. He stoped several rows back from the row where my grandparents were buried. When I got out I just started scanning and found them in less than a minute.

Re: Looking for Headstones

I have had the same experiences many times over. Searching Central and Southern Wisconsin Cemeteries, some very large and some small, I have a unique quirk of stopping the car a few feet away, and walking right to a family plot. Even though I had never been there.

My first-cousins great-grand-daughter, 13 years old at the time, with an interest in genealogy, wanted to come with me for the annual pre-Memorial Day decorating the graves of ancestors. She had never been to these cemeteries. I tried a little experiment, I had parked about 50 yards away from the family plot. I told her I couldn't remember where the Family plot was. I asked to to look in every direction and pick which way we should look. She did... and simply stated they're over their and walked right to the family plot of my great-great grandparents.

The reason I'm wondering about this, Last Friday my brother, born 4 years after the end of the war, called from a Borders book store in Minnesota. He walked by a display of books on World War II, and glanced at the photo on the cover. He kept going to what he was originally looking for but said he was drawn back to the book on WWII.

He picked up the book and opened it to the middle, to his amazment, he was staring at a photograph of our Dad, and Dad was smiling... The same photo on the cover of the book but the cover had our Dad, and others cropped out. He thought something was familiar to him.

Are these examples of inherited cellular memories, like transplant patients sharing memories of their organ donors?

We visited six cemeteries that day and she nailed 5 of the six, I think she would have batted 1000 but she, and I were exhausted, cemeteries in Wisconsin in the 1850's didn't waste valuable farmland, the were on steep inclines that could never be farmed.

Thanks for the infor Merle. I'm just so frustrated with the Mann lineage. I suppose we'll never find their parents. I've never heard of anyone being called "Thankful." However, I just found a few while researching.

Okay, this is my lineage:

Thomas Mann (1737) 4th g-grandfather
William Mann (1778) 3rd g-grandfather
Stephen Gilette Mann (1822) 2nd g-grandfather
Elizabeth Rachel Mann (1842) g-grandmother
Jacob Clemment Skiles (1879) grandfather
Melvin Skiles (1918) father

I just found a couple of self-published books on the Skiles, but they must be out of print.

Also, there is another book out of print I've been trying to locate written by "Robert Mann," Stephen Gilette's brother. It is "The Autobiography of Robert Mann." It gives some history into their lives, but mostly about the county they lived in - I think. Sure wish I could get that book. So I've got 3 on my list of "out of print." Shucks, wouldn't you know it.

Thanks again Merle for the info you've provided. I'm willing to share, so if you need anything that I might have, let me know. Nadie

Nadie

RE: Thomas & Thankful Mann

We found Thomas & Thankful in the Goodleberg Cemetery, Wales, Erie Cnty, NY. This makes sense since the Mann's were in the Aurora-Wales area.

The information came from what appears to be an listing of the burials in the cemetery, It is from "The NY Genealogical & Biographical Society" Copyright 2005.

My copy has been copied frpm a poor master but I can read it:
Mann, Thomas, d. Apr, 17,1820, aged 71.
Thankful, d.Mar 26, 1843, aged 87.
Daughter, d. July 8, 1821

Another entry shows the following:
Mann,Mary Ann,w.Thomas, d. July 23,1826,aged 23.

We have not been able to determine Thomas' or Thankful's parents.

What is your line of descent from Thomas?
Hello. I am a descendant of Thomas and Thankful Mann. They are my fourth great-grandparents. How wonderful that you have found evidence of their burial in Wales, NY. I have finally reached the Mann's in my genealogy quest. What I find amazing is that Thomas's wife was named Thankful. Do you suppose that was a nickname or her true name. Also, has anyone been fortunate in finding Thanksful's maiden name?

I have not been able to go past Thomas and Thankful, and I hope that someone has discovered the parents of both and willing to share data. I would be more than happy to share what info I've uncovered thus far. Thanks, Nadie

i have been doing my family research on and off for nearly 12 years.

i am on quite intimate terms with many of the books on the shelves of the history room of our library...(our history room is one of the top 2 in N.C.)....

and every so often i hit a brick wall in either direction on the tree, you know how it is...(i come about once a week usually)....

sometimes i just get fed up. after a couple weeks of beating my head against this brick wall, i will walk back to the usual stacks where i can be found and in a low whisper say "Please, just a name or a date, give me something."

inevitably i will run across a book that i haven't noticed before (which, based on my patronage of the library, is unlikely).

but then a couple weeks later, i won't be able to find the book!!! i'll go to the lady at the desk, give her the title of the book, sometimes even the call number, and she can't even find it in the library computer....it's like the book never existed in our library!!! but i have the name of a book, the page number, etc. of the info that i found...
and the woman will even admit that she saw me looking at a book (once i describe the color of the cover, etc).

and it's rare for me to run across any of these "unknown" books again...so i can say that prayer, but it's usually a one shot deal with the info i find with it...if i don't write it down, i'm screwed. i learned that the hard way.
Maybe you were these women in previous lives. It is believed by many cultures that we keep coming back to the same families. You may be your granchild's wife for instance in the next life. It is also why you sometimes have a distinct love or hate for someone when you first meet them, because you have had a relationship of some sort with them in a previous life. Hope this helps a bit.
Alison
Australia

Hi Deb,

The names of Victor's parents are Henry John Palliaer and Emily Ada Field married Feb 14, 1890 St. Pancras Registry Office London.

Henry's parents were Frederick William Palliaer and Lillian Oxley married JuneQ 1882 Kensington London.

Frederick's parents were George Palli(a)er and Mary Ann Hammond married May 11, 1851 St. John's Church Paddington London.

George's mother was Jane Pallier. She signed a sworn statement stating the father was a George Miller of Oxford England. Mary Ann Hammond's father was supposedly a George Hammond and mother possibly Elizabeth Cowley.

If you ever come across any photos of any of the above, could you let me know? I would love to see them!

Regards,
Caliope

We are all related (except for Darlene's Palliers, still can't connect them to our family but there is a good possiblility there). Your ancestor Frederick Palliaer decided to try a variation on the Pallier surname. Frederick's son, Henry John, and wife, Emily Ada nee Field, immigrated to Adelaide Australia in 1928.

Frederick had another son named Frederick George William and three daughters, Constance Blanche, Janet Mary and Lillie Mabel. As far as I know they have all stayed in England. I am a descendant of Frederick's brother Edmund (sometimes called Edward).

I know Victor was born in 1925 in Pancras London but do not know who he married.

I grew up in Richardson, Texas, and am familiar with the old Routh Cemetery. Alternately, it is sometimes called the "Stagecoach Cemetery," because a number of people were buried there who had passed away while riding the stage .... the route of which passed over pioneer, Jacob Routh's homestead, during the mid-nineteenth century.

The "black prairie" (more commonly, "Blackland Prairie") takes its name from the heavy, black clay which comprises the soil of the region.

Sincerely,

Holly

Darlene,
I am very familiar with those same feelings. Ever since, I was a little girl, I loved the plantation home that was situated next door to my Victorian styled home, and every chance I had I would love to go and visit the neighbors, years later when I got into research and genealogy, I found out that the plantation home that I love to visit and still love to visit and have always felt like I have come home when I was visiting over there originally was built by a 5 great grandmother of mine and I live on a portion of her original Spanish land grant of 2,000 arpents of land, which my 5th grandmother had made into a cotton and indigo plantation. I think sometimes the sprits guide us without us knowning it.
Then again, years later doing research for this author, who had a lead to uncover the secret idenity of a famous pirate, who operated in the Gulf of Mexico circa 1770's to 1813, and it seems like whenever I was in a courthouse or library and a certain inner voice spoke in my head, of course, telepathically saying pull this record, look up this civil suit, look up the conveyance, mortgage, or succession, or whatever the case may be and I always found valuable information which clarified the identiy of the person from all the information that had been termed legend and this information confirms the idenity of the pirate, which was truly a big import export slave trading business and the charm and brilliant business expertise of the brother of the famous Gulf Coast pirate, who was the manager, comes out strong. Then I got this urge to research all the pirate's family and more and more leads turn up that i know in my heart that the pirate was just a figurehead to make everyone think that a lone person operated this adventure, when in reality it was a large thriving business, I have to say likens to one of our large global corporations. I think from all my experiences that the sprits guide us to reveal the truth and we feel close to certain sprits or we may come back from the dead and relive our lives in other time epochs to attain for our wrong doing in a previouis life

hi Darlene. Serendipity! I am researching my family roots, the family name being Waterworth. My GG G/F James Waterworth married Mary Ann Pallier on 10th May 1854 at St Pauls Cobbity. Mary Ann's parents and her sister are buried in the churchyard there. The family emigrated from Soho in London.
Please email me on 2wartz@tpg.com.au for any further details
Regards
Eric Waterworth

Hi Melissa

I can really relate to your post. Shortly after starting my family history, my late husband and I visited Scotland. At the time all I knew was that some of my ancestors once lived in Kirkcaldy. En route to Kirkcaldy we drove through a quaint little town called Aberdour and decided to stop for a while to stretch our legs. The moment we started walking along one of the cobble stone streets I had the very strong feeling of having been there before. A few minutes later I told my husband that if we turned left at the next street, there would be some old houses with beautiful gardens and if we sat on the white bench in front of one of the houses we'd catch a glimpse of the sea.

My husband laughed and commented on my vivid imagination, but led the way turning left at the next street where he stopped abruptly. The sight that greeted him was exactly as I'd described it.

After returning home to Australia, I began working in ernest on the family history and was not at all surprised surprised to learn that several generations of my family had actually lived in Aberdour.

I have had a number of stange experiences whilst researching my family tree and now that I've discovered this really interesting site, I must write them up.

Cheers Trish

Jacob Hutts (Hoots)

I have been researching Jacob Hutts of Va. who has sons Jacob, Leonard, Michael and William. We are trying to connect this to Jackson Duckson who married Nancy Hutts in Bedford Co., Va. I do know Jacob and Leonard were in Rev. War but need to connect Michael and William.

Photographs from the Land of the Wandering Souls

In the summer of 2004 I started a family history. It has been an eye-opening, exciting experience to say the least. My own family is filled with unsolved murders, cover-ups, retribution, and unexplained disappearances. The county where I live, had over 100 outright murders during the Civil War, which had nothing to do with battles between the North and South. There was only one battle ever fought here, with one death as a result.

I have just recently created a website to share my photographs and to tell a bit more of the story. I invite everyone to check it out, and to feel free to comment.

www.landofthewanderingsouls.com

Enjoy!!
Lisa James

That's a great story. My son is in the Navy on an Aircraft Carrier, he's a third generation sailor, both my late father and late father-in-law were Navy, my husband and I were both Navy. Every morning I ask my dad and dad-in-law to watch over my baby, then I get a warm feeling. I think they are all still here with us just waiting to hear the right words.
