Kurio (Wendish Bible and Trunk)

Surnames: Kurio, Kurjo, Germann, Kunns, Zwor
My name is Nan Kurio. My grandfather’s grandfather was
Michael Kurio (Kurjo in Wendish) who came over on the Ben Nevis
in 1854 to Serbin, Texas from Lusatia, Germany.

Listed below is my Kurio Family Tree:

Nan Kurio
Norris Andrew Kurio (1921-2006) and Mary Curl Kurio (1924-
Otto Gerhardt Kurio (1895-1961) and Alma Schroeder (1898-1987)
Johann Andreas Kurio (1856-1940) and Maria Germann (1861-1939)
Michael Kurio (Kurjo) (1821-?) and Christiana Kunns (1833-?)
Andreas Kurio (Kurjo) and Maria Zwor

I have a Wendish Bible prepared by Johann Petschke and published
in 1797, that was in a trunk supposedly brought over in 1854 to
Serbin, Texas by Michael Kurio on the Ben Nevis.

I am curious as to the meaning or significance of the symbol on the
top of trunk and any other information or ownership of this Bible.
I would like to post pictures of these items.

You have an amazing treasure there. I've been researching the Wends of Texas for some years. We may have an ancestor or two in common.

I can't say anything about the symbol on the trunk, but I'd really like to know what it means, too.

The oldest daughter of my Great Great Grandfather, Michael Dube, Johanna Christiana, married Michael Kurio (Kurjo) in the Serbin settlement after his first wife Magdalena Rudel died on the Ben Nevis of cholera. I have not been able to find a marriage record but suspect that they were married in the breakaway St. Peters church, the earliest records of which are still missing.

My Great Grandfather was Karl Traugott Dube, Michael's second son. I'd be very interested in exchanging information, stories, data, whatever, from anyone related to this group of Wendish pioneers.

I read in the reply that you posted that Michael Dube was your great great grandfather. He was my great great great grandfather. Ernst Dube, one of his youngest sons, was my great great grandfather. I have become very interested in geneology and long forward to hearing from you.

Hi Garry!

Sorry to be so slow getting back to you. I've been researching the Wends, and in particular the Dube and Weise family, for quite some time.

Here is a web site you might be interested in looking at:
http://wendishresearch.org

I have a pretty extensive database and would be glad to share information with you. I can share a gedcom file or send standard reports via e-mail. What families are you most interested in?

Right now I have mainly been researching the Blasig family. My grest grandfsther married Anna Dube, Michael Dube's grand daughter, and his sister, Therese married Gebhart Dube. I don't know who his parents were. Is it possible to send me a picture of the Wendish Bible? My cell number is 512-253-0253. Hope to here from you.

Gerhardt Dube is my great uncle (my mother's uncle). His father is Karl Traugott Dube and his mother is Maria Falke. They had 11 children and lived in Fedor.

Is your great grandfather Johann Gottfried Blasig? According to my data, he and Anna Theresia Dube had 8 children.

I can send you a gedcom file of this family is you are using a program that will accept it.

Let me know if you have questions!
