http://boards.ancestry.com/topics.ethnic.slovak/373.3.2.1.1....

There is surname BEDNARIK as well as BEDNAR.
The ending "ik" on the end would suggest [small, diminutive]

http://www.polishroots.org/Research/SurnameSearch/Surnamesen...
-AK-/-EK/-IK/-KA/-KO/-UK/-YK

Suffixes with a -k- generally began as diminutives. In other words, Jan is the Polish form of "John," and Janek or Janko is much like "Johnny." English, however, typically has only a couple of diminutive suffixes, -y or -ie. Polish (and the other Slavic languages) have tons of them. Most have a -k- in there somewhere, or the-k- has been modified by the addition of further suffixes (e. g., -czak, -czyk). As a rule, in surnames a suffix with -k- means something like "little" or "son of."

Thus Jan is "John," Janek or Janko is "little John, Johnny," Jankowicz is "son of little John," Jankowo is "[the place] of little John" (or "of John's son"), and Jankowski is "from the place of little John or John's son." You see how different suffixes can combine to add layers of meaning to the basic name?

The original usage of these suffixes was to indicate a diminutive form. But they also came to be used in other ways, usually meaning "associated with, related to, exhibiting the quality of." Nowak comes from nowy, "new" + -ak, to mean "new guy in town," and Stasik means "one associated with Staś" = "kin of Staś."

Also, these suffixes were often added to nouns to serve as a term for a person or object perceived as related to whatever the base root meant. Thus Bartek started as a nickname from Bartłomiej (Bartholomew), and meant "little Bart, son of Bart." But once Bartek existed as a name, it could come to be used more loosely as the noun bartek, which means "yokel, peasant, hick from the sticks." This happened because folks perceived Bartek as a name popular primarily among people in rural areas, so it came to be used as a common noun for such a person. We have done similar things in English; you might refer to a redneck in general as a "Billy Bob" or any other name perceived as common among rural folk.

Similarly, sowa means "owl," and sówka, literally "little owl," can be a term for a specific kind of owl, Athene noctuae. But it's also used as a term for the Noctuidae family of moths. Apparently something about those moths reminded people of little owls, and the term stuck. Thus you have to be careful when you interpret surnames with these diminutive suffixes: the "little X" may be turn out to be a term for something not readily apparent. If you trace the development of the name

I just now noticed the info about his mother, thanks for pointing it out! Is Bednar the same as Bednarik? I have the name Bednar in my tree as her last name. Which do you think is more accurate? And Do you think the use of her maiden name means something or was this common?

You're right about Zemplin looking like Tekerdin. It does. I was just thinking that they interviewed him and heard it wrong. But, yeah, I can definitely see them reading it wrong that way.
I wonder if those records will soon be on familysearch.org like the others. I may just have to order the microfilm.

Thanks for your help

Have a good evening,

Mark
The church marriage record should confirm Ubrez,I hope as well as the children's church baptismal record.

I was thinking maybe Rebrin now called Zemplinska Siroka [I do know a MAJERNIK there] but I do think the clerk just could not clearly read Zemplen/Zemplin on his arrival manifest and wrote it Tekerdin.

Going thru Ubrez's Byzantine Catholic church records should help you locate his birth.
On the manifest he has that he left mother BEDNARIK Maria in Ubres.
I guess it's possible that it could be "Zemplin" That would have been one deaf clerk though!

I have a marriage date now and a place..well, two places. Either Oakland, Maryland or Oakland, WV. I don't know why it gave two different states. I think it's probably the Maryland one. That city is actually closer to where his wife was from. But maybe that record can help.

Also these other majerniks that you linked from Ubrez are probably relatives. I might be able to find their naturalization records. That might help clarify things.

Thanks for your reply and help,

Mark

Hi Mark

What is written for his place of birth or last residence on the Philadelphia arrival manifest? You need to attach a scan of it for me to view it.

The NARA clerk wrote the location as heard and typed does not help much. There is no such location.

Ubrezs, Ung megye:
http://lazarus.elte.hu/hun/maps/1910/ung.jpg

Hi Zlatica,

How serendipitous! The naturalization records for my great-grandfather's county (Westmoreland, Pennsylvania), have just become available online!

I found his...and it even has a photograph of him.

He immigrated to the U.S. as Istavan Majernik throught the Port of Philadelphia on 7 April 1910 aboard the SS Breslau.
I found him in the ship manifest...it even had a confirmation stamp of "May 28 1940" by the naturalization bureau.

He says that he was born in "Tekerdin, Czchoslovakia". I haven't been able to find this place. Any ideas?

He says his last residence in Slovakia was "Ubres". I believe I have found that place. It's actually not too far from where my great-great-grandmother (his mother-in-law), Mary Koczanik/Kocanik, was born, in Zahor, Slovakia.

I've attached the images.

Kind regards,

Mark

Thank you!

I'm from Western Pennsylvania and my Mayerniks were mostly from a city called Monessen, Pennsylvania. There seem to be a lot of Mayerniks who settled in that area (Lots of steel mills and mines)...and like you say, they probably have some sort of connection. I just have to connect the dots. And I'm sure it will take some time.

Mark

Yes, unfortunate because you have no one to ask so it will take some time and money to request the church birth, marriage record, naturalization intent & petition etc. but you will need to find a document with his precise place of birth to proceed with the research.

Can you connect with any of the descendants that I listed in previous post from Slovak Pride Index?
Do look over all of my posts and do post on all the boards that apply to your research like state, county etc.
Zlatica

Unfortunately, Agnes died in 2001. All of his children are dead. Stephen's son, John, was my grandfather. After my father was born, he divorced my paternal grandmother and went on to have another family. I think some of my father's half-siblings and their children might be on Facebook. I'll try to contact one of them to see if they know anymore about the family history.

Thanks for all your help, I appreciate it very much.

Mark

Mark,
Is his daughter Agnes still living? If not, you can request her church baptismal record as it should have her parents place of birth.
He, Stephen used English name so his father would have been Andras - Hungarian; Andrej/Ondrej [both spellings are used in Slovakia].
Yes, Stephen Mayernik married Margaret Zelenak sometime in the 1920s. She was born in West Virginia, USA. Her father was Mike/Mihaly Zelenak from Ďapalovce, Prešov, Slovakia.

I imagine they could have been from the same village, but I have no evidence.

I have went through a lot of those ship manifests as well, but I have no which one it could be.

My goal now I think is to find his marriage application and/or his naturalization record.

Mark

Hi,

Everything that I know comes from census records and other documents such as his Social Security application that only gives "Czechoslovakia" as his birth location. It gives no village or region. The same with his death certificate. In the 1930 census, Stephen states that he arrived in 1911 and that he was an "alien" resident. He states that he was born in "Austria" and that he spoke Slovak.

Stephen's Social Security application and his death certificate gives two different names for his father..that's why I use both. Andrew Michael.

I have no immigration or naturalization records for him nor any church records. On his death certificate though, it does state that he is was by then a citizen (1980).

I wasn't close with that side of my family growing up so I don't have much info on them. There are a lot of Mayerniks still living in the area where they lived, but I have no idea how if at all they're related.

If I can find his marriage record or naturalization records, that should be more informative, hopefully.

Thanks,

Mark

You're welcome Mark,
I don't understand how is it that you do not know where your ancestor was born when you wrote this:
If it helps, my Andrew/Michael Majernik married a Mary Bednar (according to my great-grandfather Stephen's Social Security Application).
Sounds to me like you have SS-5Form for this ancestor. Does it not say where he was born?
What about church marriage record? Birds of a feather fly together: common language and common tradition would put our ancestor together in them old days.
Do you know when the ancestor came to America? The arrival manifest would have a place of birth. Sometimes a draft registration might have a place of birth. Was your ancestor naturalized citizen?
Zlatica

Surname: Akaÿ & DNA and Majernik/Mayernik Family

Hello,

I'm researching the Mayernik/Majernik side of my family and when searching for info about my great-great-grandfather, Andrew/Michael Mayernik, I came across a baptism index listing for an, Andreas Michaël Joannes Majernik, baptized in 1857, with a father named Joannes and a mother with the name Maria Akaÿ. I have also located several other children of this couple in the same index.

Link: https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/V1Z9-HCL

I don't know if this is my great-great-grandfather or not but he would have been born around this time period considering that my great-grandfather, Stephen Mayernik, was born in 1885.

I was wondering about the surname "Akaÿ" or "Akay"
Is it a common Slovak surname? Every search that I have done on the surname usually points to it being Turkish....
which is interesting considering that I recently received my AncestryDNA results with 14% Persian/Turkish/Caucasus heritage. Perhaps the name is Roma/Gypsy?

Again, I don't know if this is even my family, but I don't know much about my Slovak side. If it helps, my Andrew/Michael Majernik married a Mary Bednar (according to my great-grandfather Stephen's Social Security Application).

Any help or opinions would be appreciated.

Thank you kindly,

Mark Mayernik

You're welcome Sandy.
I don't have much experience going thru a census or decipher Hungarian words. You might try posting on Slovakia General Ancestry board asking for help.
Find only him Dzadovsky, Michel Ubrecs, Hungary 30 1863 1893 arriving NY Ellis Island. Do think the location most likely Ubrezs - Ubrez.

www.bmi.net/jjaso

http://www.radixindex.com/en/surname_index/surname/gyagyovsz...
http://www.radixindex.com/en/surname_index/surname/dzadzavsk...
Zlatica

Thank you for your reply. I have the baptismal records for the children and the name starts as Gyagyovszky and then changes to Dzadovszky on last baptismal record and through Ellis Island. Same Godparents names used so really helped. Mother's name given as Catherina/Cath/ Hoderman/Huderman. I thought the word was Gazda=Farmer and I think for the som Katona=Soldier. Could not understand the comment on the son or what it said as occuaption across for Katona. Glad you were able to comfirm. Sandy

Does Anyone Know?

I am researching my great-grandparents, Martin Sleziak (may also be spelled Slezjak or Slezak) and Maria (Mary) Polc.

Martin Sleziak was born on 10/03/1904 in Dobrá niva which is 20miles from Zvolen and 40miles from Banska Bystrica in Slovakia to Martin Sleziak (born 11/13/1880 in Austria/Hungary) and Anna Švarc (born 1884 in Austria/Hungary). He first came to America on May 20, 1905 when he was 6months old through Ellis Island, New York. He had traveled from Breman, Germany on a ship named Prinzess Alice with his mother Anna who was 21. They traveled to Hannibal, Missouri where Martin Sleziak, Sr. was. Martin, Jr. had three siblings, George (born 4/11/1913 in Missouri), Steven (born 1909 in Missouri), and Anna (born 1911 in Missouri). In 1930, family lived in Gary City, Indiana. Martin Sleziak died in 1934.

Maria (Mary) Polc was born 4/11/1909 in Dobrá niva, Slovakia to Martin Polc and Anna (maiden unknown at this time). She had two siblings Zuzana and Anna. Maria Polc and Martin Sleziak married on January 4, 1926 in Dobrá niva, Slovakia. They came to America on July 19, 1928 through New York. They traveled from Cherbourg, France on a ship named Mauretania with their daughter Zuzana (Susan) Sleziak (my grandmother; born 10/02/1926). They had another daughter also, Mary Sleziak (born 4/20/1929 in Pennsylvania). In 1930, the family lived in Hamtramck, Wayne, Michigan. Maria (Mary) Polc died 05/07/1999 in Pennsylvania).

Maria (Mary) Polc’s family remained in Slovakia. She corresponded with a Zuzana Kolenyova, Maria Kaputikova, and an Anna Krishbova which maybe relatives. Also, she may have relatives with the last name Bahyl/Bahylova.

A Jan Sleziak aged 45, came to America on a ship named Mount Clay from Hamburg, Germany to Ellis Island, New York on January 9, 1922 to join his brother Martin Sleziak in Missouri. This may be Martin Sleziak, Jr.’s uncle or maybe no relation.

Any information would be appreciated.

Was hoping for a little help translating this census. I need help with the occupations of father Joseph Dzadovszki and son Janos. Was excited to locate the baptism records to verify that I have the correct family as the name was originally Gyagyovszky, changed to Dzadovszky, and then Duskey in the USA. Attaching an enlarged picture and hope it helps! Mother's maiden name Hoderman. On the second page, the building shows a stable and a barn. Sandy

Slovak Church Record Discontinuities

All,

I could not find specifics on this trying to search the messages... I’m trying to understand some discontinuities in Slovak Church records and am hoping someone has run across similar and can help me understand. The following is the basic timeline of events the church records show:

1. Anna Kul’ka born to Janos Kul’ka and Maria Radvansky (Address Tarnov 5)
2. Catarina Kul’ka born to Janos Kul’ka and Maria Gress (Address Tarnov 5), November 12, 1893
3. Maria Radvansky (wife of Janos Kul’ka – Tarnov 5) dies, November 29, 1893
4. Janos Kul’ka (Tarnov 5) marries Maria Gress (Tarnov 2), July 2, 1894
5. Janos Kul’ka born to Janos Kul’ka and Maria Gress (Tarnov 5), October 9, 1895

Anna Kul’ka is my great-grandmother. I have not been able to locate the marriage record of Janos Kul’ka and Maria Radvansky.

What confuses me is the Catarina Kul’ka – Gress record. The record says she is legitimate, yet she was born before Maria Radvansky dies, and before Janos Kul’ka and Maria Gress got married. Is it possible she was actually the daughter of Maria Radvansky (who died shortly after the birth) and the church got the records wrong? Since it appears Maria Gress lived a couple houses away, could she have been helping and the church logged the wrong name?

I have encountered a similar mix-up with another ancestor where the marriage is logged correctly, but the wrong maiden (last) name is listed for the mother in the first couple birth records (right address, right father). It is not even her mother's maiden name (found in wedding record), because that shows up in some later birth records.

Thank you for any insight that might be provided.

Best Regards,
Brian

both Rodak and Marfica (orginally Marchwica per the parish records) are Polish - both sides of the family trace back to Wol~a Rzedzinska, Malopolskie Poland. It is a small village just to the east of Tarnow.
