Looking for ties to my Great-Grandfathers homeland. His name was Ranko Petkovits, b. 05/1854 he moved from Austria to the US around 1880. Settled as a furrier in Seattle, WA. We believe he had family in Austria. Possibly a brother named Dimitrie and his father was named Xanty.

Do you know language of your ancestor?

I suspect a Byzantine Catholic or Orthodox, judging by the first name Dimitri. I doubt that a Slavic first name would start with letter X - Ksenty.

PETKOVITS- PETKOVICS, PETKOWICZ, PETKOVIC^.

None of his US records give you the ancestor's place of birth?

Is this Ranko a direct descendant? If yes, than his church baptismal record should have his parents place of birth.

Do you know your Ranko PETKOVITS's wife's maiden name?

The 1900 census has that R PETKOVITS arrived in 1882 and was naturalized citizen. You might try looking for his intent & petition. Hopefully there is a place of birth.

did find males arriving NY EI with the first name RANKO and the locations suggest former Yugoslavia.

Ranko Petkovits is my great grandfather, the only facts I know is he lived in Austria, traveled through Germany, France, England and then over to the U.S. We do have family photos of his that suggest he had family in Hungary. He was a member of the Russian Orthodox church. His death certificate says his fathers name was Xanty. Ranko's wife was Mary E Doyle of San Francisco.

Thank you for the weblinks, those should help me a lot.

You're welcome.
Was there no Serbian Orthodox Church in the area?
Judging by his first name, I'm leaning towards former Yugoslavia for your research.

A death certificate is one of those documents that is only 50% reliable. How about other US documents? Like I said no way a Xanty would be a first name in any Slavic country.
How soon, after arriving to America did he marry Mary E DOYLE? Do try to follow up with the church marriage record and children's baptismal record.

May I ask why you chose to post on Slovak Roots which is under Slovakia's Ancestry?

Thanks again. I posted here because I'm not a very smart person, confusing Slovak for Slavic.

You're welcome.
Slavic would include Czech, Slovak, Croatian, Serbian, Slovenian, Polish, Ukrainian, Russian etc.
Do you know language of your ancestor? I don't have a paid Ancestry subscription so can only provide what I have presented up to now.

Hi,
In the 1920 census, Ranko says he was born in Yugoslavia, and his native language is Slovene.
In 1900 census, he says he was born in May 1854.

There is a World War I draft registration for a Frank Petkovich (who may or may not be related), in Seattle, who gives his birthplace as Plalta (?), Dalmatia, Austria. His emigration records give his last residence as Blato. I'm assuming Plalta and Blato are the same place, although whether this has anything to do with Ranko is anyone's guess.

I did not look on the manifest to see if by some chance one of these people was going to the address of your ancestor.
