Hello, I noted your message dated 2009. There is a family from Wales, UK looking for relatives by the same name.

Any connection?

I quote: "I'm looking for anyone who has any connection to the Kliszczewski family in Wales, they changed their name to spiridion and were well known jewelers in Cardiff and newport"
Note the change of name.

It would be lovely to connect you.

mj7777

My grandfather was Dimitri Knysz of Sayre PA. There was a large settlement of Ruthenians (Rusyns)who lived mostly on the east side of town and worked for the railroad. They had their own church and my grandfather was an active member. The names were Americanized: Kenish & Herrick. Please contact me if you think I can be of any help.

By any chance do you have any information on Marys brother Joseph Baierski? He married my Great Aunt Dessa (Dessie) Miller about 1907, they ran the Forest Hotel in Lewis TWP., Lycoming Co., Pa. He passed away 1n 1914. Esther Nittinger was working for them in 1910. I don't know when Dessie passed or where Joe and her are buried. Mary and Joe had a sister Katie who married Thomas Ross Laughner.

Hello,

Thank you for responding to my original post. The information you provided on a Rutowicz family is helpful. I know very little about my grandmother Stefania Rutowicz (married John S. Minkel in Poland/Lithuania). She died in 1983 at age 99 and so was born approximately 1884. She immigrated to the U.S. with her husband in 1912. They eventually bought a home in Ambridge, PA and had three children. All I know is she had another sister who lived somewhere in the U.S. and at least one brother that never left Poland. I don't have the siblings' names or the names of my grandmother's parents. Maybe you can ask your family if they know of her.

Carol (Minkel) Movahed

John,

My grandmother was Stefania Rutowicz before she married my grandfather John Sylvester Minkel. My grandmother died in 1983 at age 99 so she would have been born in Poland/Lithuania in 1884 approximately. She came to the U.S. with her husband in 1912 and they settled in Pennsylvania and eventually bought a home in Ambridge, PA. Please let me know if you come across her name in your family research.

Thank you,
Carol (Minkel) Movahed

Hi,
I live in Muszyna, Poland and I know about one family that moved to the USA in 1909. First it was Kacper Rutowicz in 1909 and in 1912 his wife Katarzyna joined him with their 5 children (Józef, Maryanna, Aurelia, Antonina and Antoni) and so the family united. Katarzyna's maiden name was Kalucka and this way she was related to me. I know they all headed Sioux City and Kacper lived there between 1909-1912.

Joseph Fisereski, Montgomery Co PA, before 1904

I ran across this in one of the old Ambler newspapers online at Access Pennsylvania. It probably misspells the surname, so if anyone can correct it or add more information, please do so!
------
The Ambler Gazette
Ambler, Pennsylvania
3 March 1904
Joseph Fisereski, a Polander residing in Ambler for several years, has returned home. Soon after his arrival he was seized by the Russian government and pressed into the military service and is now on his way to the scene of the war in Manchuria and Korea. His sons are still in Ambler, being employed in the chemical works.
Hi Tracey;
Hoping you are still out there ...
My grandmother was a Smakula, married to a Stabach - that immigrated to Olyphant, PA in 1914. I grew up in that area and still have family there. The family came from Glinik Mariampolski (near Gorlice) and I'm pretty sure that my grandmother's family was from Macina Welyka. My Dad always said that she had 2 sisters, one that lived in NYC - but I haven't been able to locate.
Lisa Stabach-Haney
Semosh/Symns/Simus/ on and on?? Help?

Its been hinted that I should look into the Carpathein-Rusyn aspect of the area. I have been reserching for some years now on American roots, howeve its not time to begin on the POLISH side of the family. So since I am such a newbie at it, I would appreciate any help I can get.

My immigrant ancestor was my grandfather...Jan (John) Symus bc 1899 in what is thought to be Rawkoka, Poland...accoring to some docs I have, but on others it says Russia??

Anyhow he immigrated in 1911 via Ellis Island, NY and settled in the mining region of Lackawanna county, PA. until he died. When he immigrated he left behind a wife and infant daughter. The wife immigrated in 1913 and the daughter not until 1928. (Why? who knows). Also can you tell me what is a TUTOR in Poland? Was it similar to what we call guardianship here?
I have seen his surname mangled up into many spellings over time, so am not sure just exactly how it was originally spelled back in the old country.

His immigration papers say he was Polish, but birth was Russia. So am I to assume that at one time Rawkoka was within Russian boundaries and over time it changed back into the country of Poland?

I also need to understand how the levels of gevernment go. (i.e our towns, counties, states, country etc). And so many name places contain the same names??? Awfully confusing to me.

Where is Strupin Maly Poland? And what is it classified as: town, village, hamlet, ?? And what province would it be in?

I have a partial act of marrige that makes absolutely no sense to me at all...its been transcribed..from what to English I don't have a clue, and it leaves out the crutial middle section.

Any assistance appreciated.

Prior to the end of WW I, 1918, Austria was part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire and inc. all or parts of the modern countries of Austria, Hungary, Poland, Czech Rep, Slovakia, Ukraine, Russia, Romania, Slovenia, Italy, Croatia, Bosnia, Monenegro and Serbia and had at least a dozen official languages....

Did he live in Conshohocken Montgomery Co PA? If he did then the info on the 1930 census concurs with his Naturalization Certificate stating he was from Romania, while his wife was from Galicia, Austria which is now (southern Poland)

Is this your family from the 1930 census? Note that the census shows Samuel's arrival date in the US as 1909 and that the last 2 are listed as boarders

Name Age
Samuel Baranowiz 44
Mary Baranowiz 38
Michael Baranowiz 16
John Baranowiz 14
Anna Baranowiz 12
Mary Baranowiz 10
Catherine Baranowiz 6
Stella Baranowiz 3 4/12
Helen Baranowiz 4/12
Mike Bundra 43
Andrew Bundra 18

The real issue is that his given name was not likely Samuel.

Robert

Hi Mary,

I have just started putting my history together, a Christmas present for my family, and we may have a common thread. My brother found your posting. My grand father was John Possessky, his father, I believe was John Possesski, misspelled in the records. There are many misspelling of Possessky or maybe changes in the name over time. My grandfather John had a sisters named Olga, Stacia and Jenny. And a brother Carl who lived in Ringtown. Stacia had live in New York with her husband Paul Swater but moved back to Lost Creek PA in her later years. Jenny, last I knew, was still in that area and Olga I never really heard about. I use to spend summers with my grandfather and stacia was just down the road. This was in the early 80's and the time when I believe Stacia moved back to Lost Creek.

In the 18th and 19th century Poland did not exist as a autonomous country, due to wars issues. Its land was divided into three parts, one joined to Russia, one to Austria and one to Germany.

"Austria, Poland" refers to that part of Poland, sometimes called "Galicja/Galizia", which was joined to Austria for 120 years at the moment the document was issued. It is the southern part of present Poland.

Hope that helps.
