Although my grandparents were or Ukrainian heritage and settled in Massachusetts, they did spend about three years in Sayre, PA, where my Mother was born, had close friends in Glen Lyon, PA. My Grandmother was Ewa Smetana fron Krynica, Poland and my Grandfather was Harry Prystupa, Rava Ruska District, Galicia/Austria/Poland. On the ships manifest, they were listed as Austrian or Rusyn/Ruthenian. My Mother's Godparents were Dimitrius Knysz and Martha Johanna Hyriak.

My grandfather was Dimitri Knysz of Sayre PA. There was a large settlement of Ruthenians (Rusyns)who lived mostly on the east side of town and worked for the railroad. They had their own church and my grandfather was an active member. The names were Americanized: Kenish & Herrick. Please contact me if you think I can be of any help.

Hi, just saw your post. I am looking into the surname Hyriak. This was my mother's maiden name, and her great aunt came to the Sayre area, probably around 1910. Any help appreciated! You can also write to me at mk382k at yahoo. com. Thanks!
