Greetings,

My paternal 2gr-grandparents, Thomas Bradley & Esther D. GRIEST_ROTH were married in Circleville, Pickaway Co. Ohio on 6 Apr 1836. They had 13 children: one who died young and the last was born in Edgar Co. Illinois.

Thomas' parents, Johann Paul & Catherine REITER_ROTH were from Numidia, Columbia Co. Pennsylvania and moved to Shamokin, Northumberland Co. Pennsylvania and owned "The Eagle" Hotel there.

Thomas' grandfather, Caspar ROTH was born in Thaleischweiler-Froeshchen, Land Rheinland-Pfalz, Germany: Lat. 49 degrees 16 minutes; Long. 7 degrees 34 minutes; South West of Berlin & more precisely: South East of Luxembourg. Caspar married Elizabeth FEGER.

Esther's parents Johnathan & Mary MORRRIS_GRIEST were from York Co. Pennsylvania and moved the family to Circleville in 1834.

John & Mary lived two houses away from the ROTH family in Circleville.

Regards,
Paul Alan ROTH

Surnames: Thurn, von Thurn,
My g-g-grandfather Fredrick(von)Thurn, with his large family, moved from Germany to near Sandusky, Ohio, in 1832. They leased or purchased farm and timber land on or near the shore of Lake Erie. Some of Frederik's descendants retained the "von," and others, including my branch, dropped it.

My g-grandfather, Conrad Thurn, was one of several brothers and sisters. He was born in Germany, as were all of his brothers and sisters. He was married in Ottawa County in the 1850's.

My grandfather, Gustavus Adolphus (Gust) Thurn, was a farmer
near Fremont, Ohio. At one point in his life he was a travelling salesman, selling business systems (for organizing and record keeping) to small business men.

My father, Russell E. Thurn, was raised on his father's farm, along with his two brothers - Homer and Haldon. Homer ran a grocery store, and Haldon became a teacher in Milwaukee. Haldon never married, but traveled the world
and was a noted silversmith and jeweler. He made a number of chalices for churches throughout the world. My dad graduated from Miami University of Ohio with a degree in chemistry. He eventually became Chief Chemist and then Director of Quality Control for the Chevron refinery in Perth Amboy, New Jersey.

I have been interested in family history for more than 30 years, and have a fair amount of information. I have more time not that I am retired, and have become fairly active.
Contact me if you want to share information. Some but not all)branches of Fredrick's family carry the tradition that we are descended from or somehow genealogically connected to the Thurn und Taxis family, headed now by a young Prince von Thurn und Taxis from his castle in Regensburg,Germany. This family developed the first international postal system (with way-stations, and delivery routes through many of the main towns and cities of Europe). Their symbol was the badger, and the carriages their horses pulled were known throughout Europe. The Tassi family has been described as a bunch of robber-barons in northern Italy during the 1200's and 1300's, who earned some of their money by carrying and delivering messages in north Italy. As the system expanded, the head of the family gained rank and titles, eventually becoming the Prince of Thurn und Taxis -
his holdings were not land but his postal system. Eventually the family became extremely wealthy, with great holdings in land and timber, a beer refinery, etc.

At least two or three branches of Fredrick's family claim to have had records verifying our connection to the royal TnT family - and two claim that almost all family records were destroyed in a fire! Others, as I said, have no such tradition. I am proud of my Thurn ancestors, whether or not they are descended from royalty, but no more proud than I am of my wild Scottish highland ancestors. According to James Michener, if you have highland ancestors, you know that you are descended from some of the most expert cattle thieves in history!!
