Van Strander-what was the original name?

My ancestors in the 1800's were scattered through out Orange County, NY. They seemed to have appeared from nowhere about 1827. Prior to that there are only two references that I can find on the name Van Strander. One is a listing of Electors from Ft. Ann, Washington County, NY in 1795 (lists Abram Van Strander) and a Baptismal Record of Reformed Dutch Church in Rhinebeck Flats, Dutchess County in January 1770 that lists a Pieter Van Strander and an Antje Van Strander as witnesses for the baptism of Petrus Ostrander. I am wondering if anyone out there might be able to help me with the true origin of what became Van Strander. My grandfather once told his children that the name wasn't originally Van Strander and gave them the impression that is was more of a drastic change than from something like "Ostrander". I would appreciate any help with the name or even and records known about the Van Strander families.
