Thank you for your message. Unfortunately I do not know where Frantisek (Frank) Novotny was from. He was from a very wealthy family in Bohemia and was injured in the war and suffered greatly and died in Omaha, Nebraska at a very early age leaving his wife penniless and with a large family. His relatives in Bohemis disowned him when he married my great grandmother. She was from somewhere close to Praha I believe. It is very difficult.

Caroline Chess and Frank Upah Jr. came to Balimore Maryland. Than came down to Ohio and finally settled in Tama, Iowa.

To answer the original question(s), most Czechs immigrating to the Midwest (Nebraska, etc.) came through New York or Baltimore. You do get random groups coming in through Philadelphia, Canada, and Galveston, but the journey to Nebraska from Galveston was not easy in the early days. Coming from the east to the Midwest was easier, because of the railroads.

I have located Franz Chleborad 1886 in Ancestry. I used Fran* C*borad for the search name and he was the only hit. This is of interest to me, because there are Chleborads in my hometown in northwestern Kansas, and I find them in my various ancestral villages, too.

The wildcard Fran* will allow the search to pick up Frank, Franz, or Frantisek, taking care of the language problem. Franz Chleborad is the 4th entry on the attached page.
