Hi Laura,

You are pretty much correct I believe; Charles and Magdeleine are Canada's Adam and Eve, the number of children off this marriage of the family ALONE is incredible, not to even mention the Denys and the de la Ronde family of New France. I am descended from through Julie as well, but the family line (outside of Métis blood in Canada) as you know goes back some 700 years into France and the nobility families of Normandie, ESP Tours France. My family has collected thousands of documents, the work never ends. I like the Adam and Eve reference!

I found the baptism that you are referring to. It states that he is the "fils naturel" of his father which means that his parents weren't married (at least not in an official Catholic marriage).

I also found a baptism for his sister, Marie Elisabeth, baptized age 11 in 1822 in Berthierville which refers to her mother as a sauvagesse.

Both baptisms also say that the children were born in "les pays haut" (basically in the middle of nowhere) so it looks like once the children were old enough to travel the father took them to a priest to be baptised.

We have found a baptismal record for Jean Baptist Leopold Iserhoff, whose mother was full Cree, but, there is only mention of the father and witnesses on the baptismal record. The mother wasn't even recorded. Was it because she was native?
Sheryl
Yes, I just came across an instance of this. Marie Vaudry m. Romaine Lagimodiere was listed as "half-breed" and there is a script claim for her 9 children.

I looked at her parents (to try and see where the metis was coming from) and they are both listed as 100% french.

I guess the trail ends there......

To set the record clear :

One of the main purpose In ethno-history and genealogy is to establish the credibility of a document and to validate the facts reported in the said source.

Genealogy is not about fabrication and lore, it's about facts and documentation. To present speculations as facts is misleading.

Father Letourneau was neither an historian, nor a genealogist. He was an obscur parish priest. A good researcher has to know what he is looking at when he cites sources, which Father Letourneau was not capable of in his book. No references, no sources are cited. Just a mention that he saw what he thought was a private church register (only twice, and he could not take any notes !), when it has been stated many times that it was the firs church register of Fort Trois-Rivieres, on the St. Maurice river, Quebec, Canada's oldest written document.

All of the lines in his books were doublechecked by certified genealogists with original documents and all of them lead to European settlers, bar two Natives ancestries. No brick walls, a few unknown origins, only one name change (e European settler). Father Letourneau even managed to contradict many of his claims in the same page.

Recent DNA tests have proven that both Lejeune sisters are of European ancestry (6 times for Catherine, 4 times for Edmee):

http://www.acadian-home.org/frames.html

Test result: Haplogroup U6a - European

It's known that Native names were changed to Christian to protect native children and historically, the eldest of each generation would know of the changes in the names. What Father Jean-paul said is completely possible- this is why we often run into brick walls trying to follow the Blackbird/ letourneau History. See Nishnawbe archives (Roots)

Metis "Status" Cards DO NOT mean NOTHING!

Metis Status cards do not have any benefits in the US,

but in Canada, organizations that issue cards to their registered members based on a community do get huge funding from government for a wide variety of programs, including but not limited to: social wellness, housing assistance, education, work placement assistance, health studies and programs, cultural studies and reports, heritage events, cultural workshops, festivities and other events, and so many other programs.

Some organizations have agreements with government to conduct organized harvesting rights (like hunting) and, based on the numbers of their registered members, have representation on very many levels for the well-being and preservation of Metis culture and heritage. So every person who gets a Metis Status card helps their community in obtaining more of a voice for them.

Also, Metis Status card holders in Canada can get placement in a university or college program that might otherwise be denied to them. And of course, there is scholarship and bursary money for education expenses that Metis can apply for (and many have received).

Companies that participate in employment equity programs will give consideration to the 4 most under-represented groups in Canada -- visibly minorities, handicapped persons, women, and aboriginal people. Metis are considered one of 3 types of aboriginal people as outlined in the Canadian Constitution.

But above all these benefits, most people just want to have proof of their ancestry and a Metis Status card to prove it. Most are tired of years and generations of hiding and they just want to be proud of who they are, and know their family story. Metis Status cards are a very personal thing for so many people and not everyone is just looking for a handout.

Who knows what the future will hold for the Metis, but with the new court ruling about Metis being duly consulted by the Federal government, there might be a day when everyone will scramble to get their Status card.

As it is, there is a backlog with some organizations that is over a year long, because one thing they do not have funding for is verifying applicant's genealogy, so they will not find nor correct your native line documents for you. If you don't have all of them, they will refuse you. While some groups will help with finding your native ancestors for a fee, not all will provide you with the answers of what they find, so ask before you apply.

Before getting a Metis Status card, be sure you don't just apply to the first organization you see. Some groups only accept members who have a type of proof and belong to a specific group, and will deny status even after paying your money. You can still apply to another group, but it's better if you know which one will accept your ancestry and the proof you have before applying. Websites don't always tell the whole picture of what is needed, which can cause frustration if you think you have enough proof and find out you don't.

Best is to call them to ask what they need, if your family fits into their community, and what you will get for their processing fee or any other services they offer.

Some groups help with research but not all provide you with the results of that research, so ask what you will get if they find your native line for you, before asking for their help and paying them anything.

Also ask about how they intend to represent you if you apply for Metis Status with them. Not all groups seek to represent their members on a government level, and not all groups claim to represent every Metis. They do not share resources, they do not share funding, they do not share files and databases. Also, some groups may refuse if you are already registered with another group, so make sure you apply to the one that best suits you. In Ontario, the following groups were listed on the Canadian Aboriginal Portal website (2013) as organizations issuing Metis Status cards:

Communities of the Voyageur Metis
Metis Registry, The (MNO)
OCAP
OMFRC
Saugeen Metis

Your right of course however the Ontario Metis Nation does NOT accept this it must say somewhere, Metis. I know I got my card before the Powley case and that is what they are basing their information on. I recommend people go through the Metis Nation of Canada at http://www.metisnationofcanada.org/ they are here for everyone who can prove some sort of Native/Metis in their geneology. I have been doing this search for over 25 years and I can GUARANTEE you will Not get a card from the Ontario Metis Nation without the words from the Powley case. Hope this helps many out there. ths

I am going from memory and I am pretty sure that there is an online document that says she was a sauvauge they do not use the word native or Indian back then and if this person is saying it has to say this then they do not know what they are doing. Historically natives or Indians ere described as anything but that.

I see where Metis Nation Ontario is one price 30.00 and youdont have to renewe it ever. They said you dont get it back if ur not accepted. They said youare or ur not that they dont accept everyone and there has to be prove. At the
Metis Nation of Canaada and Maniwaki Metis Nation you have to renewe every 5 years...They are like where my mom got her's in Quebec she had to renewe every 5 years.. But now she has the Full Status Card and so do I due to the Bill C3. We got that on my Grandmother side father. Cesar Paul he and his children lived in Maniwaki resever till he move them out of there when the Whiteman was going taking the children and he didn't want that for his kids... His Wife is Alexina Paquette(she is the one connected to lineage of Martin Provost And Marie Oilver) Anyway Geting back to the Metis thing..I was also told you are only allowed to join in one place. You said you have card in both place....So we can do that? Also is it the same Privilliage has the Metis Nation Ontario? Just trying to understand the whole pitcure. Thanks Joanne
