I don't know how much this will help but it is my understanding that many in the Creek Nation kept african-american slaves even after they moved to Oklahoma. At the end of the amercan civil war the US government required many of the creeks to sign a new treaty because most of them sided with the Confederate States and in the treaty of 1866 they were required to emancipate their slaves and take them in as full members of the Creek Nation. After that many ex-slaves and decendants of slaves held positions of power within the Creek Nation.

In 1783 the State of Georgia passed an Act confiscating the property belonging to known Loyalists and banished them from the state. Many of them, such as the Weatherfords, had Creek family connections. Most fled to either England or the British held islands in the Caribbean. This is a link to a list of Loyalists banished that is on the GA USGENWEB:
http://files.usgwarchives.net/ga/effingham/military/revwar/l...

I browsed through it and didn't see any actual surnames of Crick or Creek but thought I'd post it in case there were other names of interest.
Evelyn S.
Kathy, and Norris,

Thank you for your replies: I just wanted to add that the earliest Coosa County, Alabama Record Book (1834-1858) includes many Creek Indian "Surnames," and that the first 3 or 4 pages of this book are entirely devoted to the estates of Creeks. These people were of course either removed, killed, or otherwise deceased, at the time of Creek Removal in 1831-1832. Before then, almost all of the land in Alabama east of the Coosa River belonged to the Creeks, except for the northwest corner of the state, north of Wills Valley, which was Cherokee. Some of the wealthier Creeks and Cherokees (mostly "mixed-Bloods" - with Whites) also owned plantations, and kept slaves.

Wishing you both a very Happy New Year!

Otis Fuller
Synima, Kathy is exactly right:The various Muscogean tribes did in fact choose to locate their settlements along waterways. The word "Crick," is also still a common pronunciation for the word creek, (referring to a stream or creek- Redneck Speech Example: "Raht cheer at t'other side o' the crick.") at least in rural Coosa County, AL, where my Fuller family is from, and which was smack in the middle of Alabama Creek Indian country until the last Creek Indian removal in 1831-1832. Actually, some of my cousins also claim a bit of Creek heritage from their lines. Additionally - as for your reference to Carribean Islands: Recent DNA, linguistic and archeological evidence suggests that the Southeastern Muscogean tribes descend or are related to the ancient Mayan Indians of the Yucatan Peninsula. If you Google Creek and Mayan Indians, or some/any combination thereof, you will find some sites that contain this information.
Good Luck,
Otis Fuller

Otis

Thanks for your interesting info.

I discovered that the surnames CREEK and CRICK were of English origin and can be found in English Parish Records dating back to the 1600s.
I am attempting a research on any connection between Creek Indians and some Caribbean families. I am told (this has not been substantiated) that some Creek Indians traveled to, among other, Barbados. Upon arrival they gave their last name (family name) as Creek, which was distorted to Crick (perhaps by the way it was pronounced). My interest is that I am a direct descendant of the Crick family, and would very mush like to know if indeed there is a link between my family and the Creek Indians. Any assistance that could be provided in this regard will be greatly appreciated.

I realize they ceded the lands prior to 1840
The difficult issue I have is oratory stories.
My grandmother stated her grandmother Pete Cope
She stated he looked just like the indian actor that played on Outlaw Josie Wales.. His mother was Lucy Bailey and she married a Doctor Marshall Cope around 1871.

The only other name that I have that "Might" be indian is an Ann or Anna Prather. She married Simon Rhodes in Indian Creek are of what is now Bullock County Ala.

My grandmother's mother said her name was
Emma Marlila Lusana Elvona Larsena "Elizabeth" Sasherlee Frances Copes

I believe all of those names are linked to either family members or something like that however, I haven't been able to link these names to anything other grandparent name.

I appologize if this is too scant of information but of course with genealogy you have to come up with a lot of "theories"

What I was hoping for was some insight on families who remained in Pike/Bullock and stated they were indian or part indian and what were those surnames or stories. That would help me to understand what type of information I should look for.

Thanks in advance

I have noticed that a small area of Barbour County also became Bullock County which I have Anderson family members from that area. I do realize many Indians left Alabama for Oklahoma or even Canada, but many stayed behind and lived amongst or as African Americans.

I believe the surnames Bailey, Rhodes are linked to the Indians that lived in the Indian Creek Area of Pike/Bullock County pre 1860's. I'm not sure if my Anderson line may also have ties as they are Indian Creek/Barbour county line area.

Interested in speaking with anyone who can provide me some insight on Indian heritage for families in this area. Thanks in advance

I have a tribe and a clan, but no NDN family.

I am Tenetke Yvhv. I was so named at the Creek Council in Oklahoma City many years ago with Chief Fife. I was born in Oklahoma City in 1960, and was given over for adoption immediately. I know this must have been hard, but probably a prudent choice. I have been raised by white people with a degree of Creek blood, but I was raised white. But I knew I was indian, but was never really sure what tribe i belonged to. So, I adopted and learned many customs from many tribes. I speak a little Lakota, Comanche, Navajo, very little Creek. When I was 27, my mother helped me get a court order, and I broke into my birth records to prove my lineage and heritage. I made one attempt through the council in OKC to contact my mother discretely, so as to not cause her any shame or embarassment, or shock. I never heard from her. But my friend that knew her said i had almost ten brothers and sisters. I would be the eldest. I am descended from Siah Green and Minnie Washington. I believe I am Wind Clan. I do not wish to disturb my maternal family, as I was raised by very loving folks, and wanted for nothing but brothers and sisters. I am the only child of my parents. So, I am a man of Creek blood, Wind Clan, and not a single known indian relative to wrap my arms around. No one to teach me the ways of the Este Mvskokvlke, Creek Nation. I have a sad heart, but a proud spirit. I am divorced, and my children are grown. In my elder years, I look for brothers or sisters that are interested.

I am an adopted Creek, and I had to break into my birth records with a court order when I was 27 to prove my heritage and rejoin with my tribe. This is no easy task, as these birth records and adoption papers are kept sealed forever, unless a court order is issued.

He moved to Mississippi with his first wife and four children. I believe her first name was Lula. I do know she is burried at Oakedake cemetary in Brandon, Ms. He later married my grandmother{Ora Bethune} and they raised their children in Brandon, MS. I know he had sibling still living in Russellville, AL in the 1950's. I do not know a lot about his mothert or father. If you have more information pass it on to me.
