Please help!

I am trying to identify or narrow down a century old family quest. My ancestor, Anthony Louis Descomps dit Labadie b 1730 b 17 Dec 1807 is listed in church records in Windsor as having relations with a Sauteuse Indian which resulted in several children.

It is well known that Labadie was sympathetic to Chief Pontiac and had taken up arms with him against the British. However, some people in the family believe that this woman was a gift from Chief Pontiac (one of his daughters). I am just trying to narrow down whether or not Sauteuse is a sub-tribe of one of the major tribes in the Detroit/Windsor area or her actual name. I would REALLY appreciate any assistance anyone can provide.

Thank you for any help you can provide or direction.

Sauteuse is a tribal designation not an actual surname (Natives did not have surnames) The word is French and a feminine ending (also rendered Sauteusse and other variations. Sauteux is masculine). Generally it is given to those Natives residing in the Sault Ste Mariee area. It is another name for Chippewa or Ojibwa.

Tribal names were used as surnames in some cases, but not with consistenancy. For example one record might use Chippewa as a surname but in another it might be CABAY which is Native. Makes things a little confusing at first but if you are aware of the possibilities then you can watch out for them more.

I have heard of the story of LABADIE & a daughter of Pontiac, but have never seen anything to document it. Have you gotten actual copies of the baptisms of all the children, how about death records & probate records? Good luck.

Hello! I have recently learned that I have the Labadie family bloodlines among others... I was told that a great, great ect. grandfather was an explorer from possibly France...married an Ojibway indian princess! Perhaps we are speaking of the same occurance! I was thrilled to find out I have native indian in me and I have been searching endlessly for any information. My name if my parents married, would be "Fidler." Are we related?
