Sauteuse is a tribal designation not an actual surname (Natives did not have surnames) The word is French and a feminine ending (also rendered Sauteusse and other variations. Sauteux is masculine). Generally it is given to those Natives residing in the
Sault Ste Mariee area. It is another name for
Chippewa or Ojibwa.
Tribal names were used as surnames in some cases, but not with consistenancy. For example one record might use
Chippewa as a surname but in another it might be CABAY which is Native. Makes things a little confusing at first but if you are aware of the possibilities then you can watch out for them more.
I have heard of the story of
LABADIE & a daughter of Pontiac, but have never seen anything to document it. Have you gotten actual copies of the baptisms of all the children, how about death records & probate records? Good luck.
