I have been searching my lineage for my chickisaw ansestors. Can you give me an idea where to start. I have enrolled for my CDIB card to be registered Blood Quantum for both Choctaw and Chickisaw. I have not much help through the Chickisaw Nation administrative department. I'm wondering if my GGgrandmother and GGrandmother were listed on the rolls. Do you think you could give a direction to go after this hurdle.

It is my understanding that in order to qualify for a CDIB your ancestor has to have had a Dawes Roll #. Usually, if your family has a Dawes # they also will have later applied for for the Guion Miller Roll. If you find a relative on the Guion Miller Roll you can use their application number to request copies of their application from the N.A.R.A. to establish your family connection.

You can call the N.A.R.A. to request the correct order form at 202-501-5395. The old order form "NATF Form 83" is no longer accepted and there has been a price increase.

I checked the sources I have for the names you noted but didn't find them in either of Bob Blankenship's Roll books, for Dawes or Miller Guion, but I have been told his books are incomplete.

I do have a book of biographical sketches that has a Rev. Colbert E. Burris who first married a Miss Hoyay and after her death he married a Miss LEE. Bradley. There is a mention of two children surving from the family by his first wife named Hindeman and Issac. According to this sketch Rev. Colbert E. Burris was Chickasaw and served as a Senator in Pon-to-toe county, I.T. in 1859. If this is your ancestor (as he had a son named Issac) it should be easy to find information on his family. If you are interested in the complete bio on Rev. Colbert E. Burris let me and I can either e-mail you or post it here for you.

You also may want to try contacting the Oklahoma Historical Sociey as I believe they also do research. You could probably use your search engine to find their website.

The bio-sketch for Rev. Colbert E. Burris:
C.E. Burris was born in Pontotoc county, Mississippi, in 1827. His father died when he was but five years old. In 1837 he moved with the tribe to Pushma-lein, Choctaw Nation, and afterward went to live with his mother on a small farm near Tus-Ka-hom-ma. In 1849 he went to Doaksville in the capacity of a cowboy. In 1850 he moved back to Jacks Fork county and married a Miss Hoyay. In 1856 he came to Pon-to-toe county, where under the Harris administration he was first elected a Representative, and as Senator in 1859. In 1861 he was elected Chickasaw Delegate to the meeting of the five tribes at Old Norfolk Town (Eufala), and several years afterward to General Pike treaty, and in 1865 to the treaty at Fort Smith. In later years he was elected three times as a delegate to confer with the Choctaws, the last time in 1886. During thirty years Mr. Burris served as Senator, and was Supreme Judge at the time that Governor Cyrus Harris was counted out by B.C. Burney. During the Guy administration he was appointed (in1886 and 1887) to meet the united tribes at Okmulgee and Fort Gibson; was appointed during the Byrd administration a member of the Chickasaw Commission, which office he holds at present [about 1891].

Mr. Burris was ordained a minister of the Methodist church immediately after the war, and is at present a member of the Muskogee Conference. Soon after the death of his first wife he married Miss LEE. Bradley, a native-born Missourian, by whom he had seven children, tow alone surviving from the family of his first wife, whose names are Hindeman and Isaac. Mr. Burris is a candidate for Governor in the *present election contest.

*The book that this information came from was originally printed in 1891. Hope this helps in your research. There is also a Judge Gabriel Burris who had a son named Isaac Burris but they are Choctaw. Judge Burris married Miss Iny-a-tubbe, niece of Captains Tom and Dick Hayes. If any of these names are in your family I can post that bio-sketch also.

I enjoyed reading your Bio-sketch of Colbert which I found after they finally made this query board searchable.
Colbert was the brother of my gggrandmother Mary Immioka Burris. His correct name is Colbert Ashaylatubby Burris. He had 6 children by his first wife Anhoyi Palmer; Issac, Annie, Hindeman, Liza, Pittman, and Lucy. His second wife Laura Bradley give him 7 more children; George Washington, Marvin, Lulu, Daisey, Cecelia, Lillie, and Lemuel. Colber and Mary traveled to Ok IT in 1837 on the "Trail of Tears". A large portion of the Chickasaw museum in Tishomingo contains photos and artifacts of Colberts. Colbert is also a member of the Chickasaw hall of fame. I know very little about Lucy, but Issac and Hindman were quite prominent in civic and business affairs in the Stonewall and Ada area.

From family information handed down, I have reason to believe the Gabriel Burris line were also Chickasaw but signed up on the Choctaw rolls. I am seeking info on Gabriel's son, Isaac Burris, and more information about his family. My husband's grandmother was raised by this Isaac Burris. Information on a handwritten piece of paper we have about grandmother is "Sophia Jones, daughter of T. Jones and Tennessee Burris, born May 4, 1867." I've been unable to find anything on the Internet about T. Jones or Tennessee Burris, her relation to Isaac Burris, or why Sophia was raised by the Isaac Burris family. I have a picture of the double headstone for Isaac Burris d. Dec. 6, 1897, and Eliza Burris d. Dec. 5, 1897. They were poisoned. I'd like to find out more about that, as well. From information I've gotten from other descendents of this line, Eliza was not Isaac's first wife. Any assistance will be most appreciated.

I checked the book where I found the information on Gabriel Burris and Issac Burris but did not find any follow-up information on Issac Burris other than what I have already posted on this board. There isn't any mention as to who he married or even a date for when he died.

I also check for Sophia Jones, T. Jones, and Tennesee Burris in the index of the same book, but none were listed.
