My grandmother's maiden name was Merchant. Her grandfather's name was James Merchant. She used to have a family tree that listed several Merchants as Cherokee plantation owners. How would I be able to find out if I am of Cherokee descent?

I have no information on the Hicks family, but my great-grandmother was a West. Maybe we are related.

I am looking for any information on America and Hedji Marlow (or maybe spelled marlowe) All I know is that they were in the state of TN and that they had a child named Zola who was born around 1901. They also had a daughter named Viola and a son. Supposedly Hedji was a Cherokee and America was a blackfoot indian. Any information is appreciated.

Surnames: Carey (not sure of spelling
I am trying to validate my family native American heritage. My great great grandfather was Myles Carey (not sure abot spelling of first or surname), he was a stage coach driver for Pony Express. And may have had some run ins with the law (not sure what type of laws he might have broken). He came from the Tennessee Valley. His daughter,my great grandmother, stayed on the reservation with her children for awhile in the latter part of the 1800's. During a separation from her husband. My great grandmother's name was Mamie Carey(again not sure about spelling) born sometime around the mid-1800's. My great gradmother married, Peter Washington Ward and they had three children, Arthur, Roland, and Estell. After Mamie Ward's husband died she and family moved to Waycross, Georgia. My mother is the daughter of Roland Ward and Annie Austin. Her name is Ruth Ward she was any ophan by age three. She lived with her grandmother Mamie Ward in Rising Sun Maryland. Mamie had to other childern Vera and Leroy I don't know their father's name. In Maryland Mamie became Mamie Boddy.(not sure of spelling of name.) Mamie died in August 1937 in Rising Sun, Maryland. My mother is 87 years old and know nothing about her heritage, Mamie felt she and her sister should not know anymore than I have written . If any one can help in any way it would be greatly appreciated. There are no birth records of my mother's or her older sister birth. A birth certificate was issued on the information in an old Bible for my mother and her sister. The Bible was lost when my great grandaunt died.

Thank you,
Joyce

I've always been told my family has Cherokee blood. They originated out of North Carolina into Tennesse & Kentucky. I was told one of my great grandmother' was in the Trail of Tears. My great grandfather was Charles Herman Cole- born in 1876 died-Dec.11,1923-He married Mary Ellen Douglas-"Mandy"-born in 1872- died on Dec.15, 1928. To this union, 7 children were born--- Tilda (the oldest), William Sylvester (My grandfather), Herman (Red), Elbert, Myrtle, and possibly George.
Charles Herman Cole was the brother to Mary Ann Cole, as known as Ma Minnie or Aunt Minnie, also full blooded Cherokee. Born on January 1,1874. Died on Feb.4,1953. Mary Ann Cole married William Monroe Douglas ON June 7,1899 in McCracken Co.,Kentucky. Mary Ann Cole's father was John H. Cole from Dyersburg, TN. Mary Ann's mother is not listed but said to have been 100% Cherokee. I've always been told I was related to Jesse James. Any info would be appreciated.

Surnames: BRAZELL ~ SMITH ~ HALE
I am doing research for a friend's Cherokee branch of her family. Her great grandmother was Maude BRAZEL/BRAZZELL/BRAZIL b: June 30 1884 d: May 12 1959 in Monroe Co.but was buried in the New Hope cemetery in Loudon Co. Her death certificate shows her parents as DANIEL BRAZZELL and NETTIE BOWERS. Maude's daughter, Ella Smith Hale, told the family that her mother's Cherokee name was White Swan who had a brother named Joe that lived on a reservation all of his life in TN, but there is a possibility it may have been in NC. This is apparently all that is known about their Cherokee connection.

Maude married a man named Richard Smith, date unknown. I found them on the 1900 census in Monroe Co. Maude was 15 at the time of the census and is shown as "wife" under the relationship column, but in the column that asks number of years married it says "O" for both Richard and Maude. There is no question about the "O" and almost looks like the census taker was trying to make a point. There is a large O and a small o in the middle of it. Census also shows Maude as white as she is also shown on the 1920 census. Seems to be a common practice in those days re: their race...for obvious reasons, I suppose.

The other children of Daniel BRAZZELL and Nettie BOWERS were Joe, Amos, Ollik and Sallie. If this family sounds familiar to anyone, we sure would appreciate some help.

Thanks for taking the time to read this!
