Hi Kathy

Yes I'm aware there are actually many more than 200 (as if that wasn't enough LOL). Probably more like 350-500 range. With new ones poping up every day it would seem. Often with the same "chief" running 3, 4 or 5 of them all at the same time. Only Federally reccognized "Tribes" (3 Cherokee)have any legal legittimacy by the US Constitution.
There are 3 (at least) red flags anyone looking into these others (of any tribe) should be aware of.
1: Claims of "State reccognition". Reccognized as what? Most are 301-C-3 (not for profit) registered with their State. Just like any Bot Scout Troop, Church, Elks Lodge or charitable organization. Just because there is "Cherokee" or "Tribe" in the title doesn't make it so. Being a C-3 doesn't make them "State Reccognized" as an Indian entity of any type. Just as non-profit organization. Which is not to say the "Chief" as head/CEO can't be payed a sallery of lots of money. The US Constitution clerly vests the power to regulate "commerse" (which means ANY dealings with & includes reccognition) with Indian Tribes with the Federal Gov.
2: If there is "Incorperated" in the title. That means the chief operators (Corperate officers) can not be sued as individuals. For any fraudulent acctivities by the organization. A truely legal Tribal officer is protected by laws under "Soveriegn immunity" as is the Tribe it self.
3: If they charge a "fee" to become a member. Or ask for no doccumentation of claim to being Cherokee. "Granny said"
is no proof what so ever. If she said "the moon is made of green cheese" it wouldn't make it so either LOL

Then there is the claim of "fileing" for Federal Reccognition". Well anyone (organization)can "file". Which is nothing more than a letter of intent & asking for the paper work forms. They should be aware that the BIA has stated they will reject any "splinter" (independant) groups of reccognized tribes. Meaning reguardless of claims of having "filed". There will never be more than the 3 that are reccognized now.

As for "future generations" getting a good laugh? Well unfortunatly future generations may find these "membership" cards & think they actually mean something. Like now, people keep trying to use Dawes applications as means to legittamize their claims. When those applications were rejected. Or "I have a picture of Grandma in a buck skin dress" so she must have been an Indian. Oh yeah? I have a picture of me in a Confederate uniform. That doesn't proove I was in the Civil War ( I may LOOK that old but I assure you I'm not LOL).

Moytoy

You are being generous........there's way, way more than 200 fake and fraudulent groups claiming to be Cherokee.

And not just confined to the US !
Thankfully, action IS being taken, and numerous of these groups, and individuals are being investigated.

How sad that so many people are so gullible, and willingly "buy" in to a heritage that they have not the slightest connection to, or any real knowledge of.

And what a sad legacy to leave for future generations.
Oh well, I guess, if nothing else, the descendants will get a good laugh out of it !

KR

fI am sorry that people have been rude to you regarding Cherokee. The name Mahala is sometimes a Cherokee name but not always. It is a name loved by Cherokee and White people. I thank God for what I am too, which is both Cherokee and White. If I were something else, I would thank Him for being that, since He makes no mistakes when He makes us. When people are rude to you just recognize that they probably are not close enough to God to thank him for anything.

I'm sure they will welcome you with open arms. With no proof what so ever of any Cherokee blood. That's what they do, feed your fantacy & you feed thiers.
The mystery of William Agee born in 1820 has now been solved. According to verbal family history he was once captured by federal forces and escaped. In 1838 he moved to Spring Hollow Missouri. I attended a meeting the Chickamauga Cherokee of Missouri on June 7. When I met Chief Kay, she asked for my Cherokee connections. I told her of William Agee who left Tennessee in 1838 and moved to Spring Hollow Missouri. She said that I was very likely Chickamauga. She said William Agee lived in Chickamauga territory. My history was the same as many of their histories. When I met with Chickamauga Warrior who spoke Cherokee, I asked if the name Ot (my grandmother's name) had particular meaning. He said it was a very common Cherokee name and that he ofter heard that name among Cherokee. I even had a family resemblance to some of those present. My plan now is to apply for membership in the tribe. My Experiment with trying to put together a Spring Hollow group is being dropped because there is already a tribe that includes the group I was trying to put together in order to get more information. There is no longer any need for it. I uncovered a plan to build a museum about the Indians in hiding in the Spring Hollow area. Artifacts have been found in that area. I am not yet at liberty to say who is doing it, but plan to have contact with him later.

My mission is accomplished so I will be leaving the forum now. I have a knack for stirring up controversy which I like to avoid in my old age. Now I just want to enjoy leaning more about my own group the Chickamauga.
That area of PA was populated by 3 (IIRC) tribes of Indians. Prior to your John being born, the documented tribal members were relocated to the central states. Since he was born after the relocation, that will make it difficult to prove indian ancestry unless by chance one of John's ancestors were noted as indian on one of the earlier census. One other possible avenue would be to check for any of John's ancestors/relatives on the Dawes roll since the Delaware tribe was incorporated into the Cherokee Nation in about 1897.

Dennis

Please feel free to email me at lowell.yelverton@yahoo.com I could not find anything on Elizabeth & John Shirley other that 2 with the same name were parents of Belle Starr.
i have recently come upon this bit of information and find that going to findagrave.com and searching a name with actual or approximate dates and states does uncover a lot of info.Sholotie's grave marker says wife of Ned Gatling.Edward gatlin was also refered to as Ned but they mispelled her last name on the marker.
i am an easy-going type person and would love to correspond with you.I was born in Laurel Miss. and grew up in Mobile Alabama and in Warner Robins Georgia.I have resided in Ft.Lauderdale Florida since the late 70's.Any information however trivial is interesting to me.I have email address for the Chief of the Santee tribe in S.C. but they may have been fron N.C. as I believe some of your info states.Sholotie has always for whatever sentimental reason interested me.They fact that she had an Anglo name(Charlotte) and that her mother Elizabeth had also and looking at the Shirly famly page does not indicate Indian makes me believe that they were assimilated into the new Amerian culture.

The main house built by William Shorey Coody was destroyed by fire in the early 1900s per Carolyn Thomas Foreman's article on Emma Coody Robinson in the Chronicles of Oklahoma.

I have not studied the Keyes family but know that is a prominent family in the Cherokee Nation.

Early later had two other children by Charlotte Berryhill. Sarah Ann and David.
Gosh, I think we all just want to sort the facts out, and I wish that we could come together to heal a historical wound instead of taking shots at one another over discrepancies. More than a hundred years, something awful happened to all of our ancestors. Many of them were driven to one area. Others fled, hid, or died. Their history and the archive of their names was recorded by their oppressors, many of whom had a long pattern of reneging and lying. Even within the tribe at that time, there was division and strife. Heck, it's hard enough to figure out just what happened yesterday when you hear two different sides of a story.

We're all trying to piece together long past information that occurred during a time of trauma. Whatever is written on a piece of paper somewhere--we are all affected. Even if we may have lost our roots, we have our unique medical issues and food needs and our unique predispositions and vulnerabilities. We're just trying to answer the questions of our today---like why do I feel better when I eat red meat? If someone walks into the room when my father is sleeping, he wakes up screaming. So do I. Where did we get that from? Where did we get our beautiful cheekbones and dark eyebrows? What is the key from yesterday that can help us understand today?

We don't want to take anything away from anyone. We just want to know how we came to be who we we are.

We are not one another's enemies. The enemy was Andrew Jackson and his lawless cabal. The enemy is anyone who lives by that today.

To research any ancestry always start with yourself and work backwards through your parents, grandparents, etc. acquiring the necessary documents...birth, death, marriage, etc...that will contain the answers to your questions.
One of the very first things you should do is "disregard" all family stories regarding Indian, royalty, etc. until you have found at least a clue that you can follow through on.
You said that your grandmother's grandmother was born in Oklahoma, then you stated where both of them were born...WV and IL...neither of which is OK. All of them were born long after the Trail of Tears.
Deborah Shay Trickett is listed as "white" on her death certificate in WV.
As far as the "amount" of Indian blood, as Kathy always says, that is a white/european concept...not Indian. Another concept to disregard.

Help

Grandmother Jessie Colt Odell told me she did not know how much indian blood that she had because her grandmother would never admit to how much.Grandma said that her grandmother was raised on the reservation in Oklahoma.
1. Could any of you kind researchers give me some idea on how I go about researching this?
2. Were the Cherokee the only tribe that traveled the trail of tears?
One of Jessie's grandmothers was born in West Virginia and her name was Deborah Jane Shay 1851-1873.
I can furnish the next generation back if that would be of any help.
I don't believe that Grandmother Margaret Ann Sellers is the one. She was born in 1844 in Illinois.
Any help on my search would be greatly appreciated as I have no idea what I am doing.
Thank you.
