My great-great-grandmother, Keturah McGary, was said to have been part Cherokee, and that would have to be from her mother's side, because we have researched her father's side and it isn't there for certain.
Her mother was Mary "Polly" Blevins (b. ca 1790 KY), whose father was William Blevins, a longhunter. He had many dealings with the Cherokee. His wife's name is not known. The Cherokee line is most likely hers.
A cousin of mine, who also is descended from Keturah McGary, has many family stories about her definitely being part Cherokee. My side of the family has said absolutely nothing about an Native American ancestor. Go figure.
Two questions: 1) Does anyone know of William Blevins (who also served in the Rev. War) having a Cherokee wife? and 2) If a lot of people on my cousin's side say that we are part Cherokee, and no one on my side says boo about it, can we believe his side, or what?
