Spelling variants are common before early 1900s, so one can't rely on a spelling to link a family line. While there are Shumaks/Schumaks etc. with purported Native Cherokee blood, there is also the Shoemake (any spellings) line out of Jackson County, Alabama who are on the Dawes Roll, they are descendants of Annie Thorn (her mother was a ParchCorn and probably a mixed blood) and father Daniel Thorn. Annie married a John Shoemake (listed as mulatto in 1850, but he was not the father of her four children.
