I'm searching for any info on my Cherokee family. I have at least two, and possibly three ancestors who were Cherokee. My great-grandfather, William Denton Bost, born 3 Dec 1874 in Tennessee, was half Cherokee through his mother, Nancy Susan Carmack, who was born abt 1845, also in Tennessee. According to our family stories, his Cherokee grandfather's name was George; he hid out in the Smoky Mountains while the Army rounded up the Cherokees in Tenn. and led them on the Trail of Tears, and so managed to escape.
My gg grandmother, Sarah Ann Walker, daughter of Memory Walker and Martha (?), was also either full or half Cherokee. She was born in 1826 in Georgia, and married William Alexander Bruce in Lumpkin Co. GA. She and her daughter, Phoebe Bruce Jones, lived for some time on a reservation in Roosevelt, Kiowa Co., Oklahoma, where Sarah died on 26 July 1920. I believe that my Walker and Bruce ancestors were married to Indians, but we have no real information to base this on other than family stories.
I would appreciate any info, not only on my ancestors, but also on the Cherokee in Tennessee and Georgia. Thank you in advance! Cheryl Jones
