My grandmother told me before she died that my grandfather's last name was not his biological name. The story goes that my ggrandmother married a cherokee with the last name of Dering.(Might be Deering).My grandfather(mike)was born April 6, 1906. My ggrandmother left with my grandfather and married a man with the last name of Marcum. She made my grandfather use that last name, not Dering. My grandfather's name wasn't changed legal.
This is all I know right now. How in the world to I find my Cherokee Heritage???? Since both my Grandparents have passed away.
I really want to find the family my ggrandmother took away from me. And my surname Marcum is not my Legal name.My garndfather died March 16,1993 in Yakima,Wa.
