My father recently gave me some information, not much mind you, regarding my great-great grandmother, who was a White Mountain Apache. The only thing I know is that she married a white settler, and died in childbirth with her daughter, my Great-grandmother Josephine. I believe her last name would've been Smith, who later married into the Danskin family. Any assistance with this would be greatly appreciated, whether it be who she married, what her name was, when/where she was born and raised! Thanks so much!

This was never spoken of because of the time period it took place.
All I know is she is from the white mountain Apache clan and her name was Ivanetta, she married a white man by the name or earl smith, she died giving birth to my grandmother.
I am unsure of the dates. I would like to dig deeper and find my roots. can anyone help me?

Native American Records? Cochise-Geronimo

My fathers late uncle - told a story that we were related to some native americans.. well known ones-- The story is that we are Grandchildren of Apache Cochise. And also that Geronimo is an uncle.

Unfortunatly for me - Geronimo had between 6-9 wives... Tryin to find American indians with ancestry has been extremily hard for me...

Does anyone have any hints/sites or places for me to search?
I appreciate your help. Thank you in advance :)

I have found that my native blood line actually came from my grandmother (Salazar) and not my grandfather (Ybarra), at least the family isn't aware of the native ties. My grandfather was part Basque, though.
Good luck, don't give up. I found my father after a 32 year search.

Paternal Apache Heritage

This isn't specific to Arizona, as I'm actually attempting to search for paternal Apache heritage ancestral to Chihuahua, most likely from the Nednhi (southern Chiricahua).

My paternal family are just run-of-the-mill mestizos without Indian cultural background, so it's been difficult for me to determine exactly what my heritage is. My grandfather's name is Salvador Gutierrez, and my grandmother's name Celia Grajeda. I've been told that our heritage is Tarahumara because my great-grandparents were from the Sierra Madre, but I can't be sure. If I satisfied Chiricahua blood quantum standards and possessed enrollment data for an ancestor (which I concede is unlikely), I'd be eligible for enrollment in the Mescalero tribe, since they absorbed the Chiricahua, correct?

I am trying to trace my heritage as far back as possible and document my Apache bloodline. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks. Eli Martinez

Hi Larry, I did find census,s that list Ynez Sanchez as mexican, and also white.I could not find any records that list your Thomas family as indian. I was not able to find records for Elsie Wilson. I found 2 Hinson Thomas listed, a father and son. There were many indian Thomas living in the Res. but I did not connect them to your Thomas family. This website has many records of your family. Both Hinson Thomas, Maria Ynez Sanchez Thomas, listing her parents as Joseph Sanchez and Terresa Ayola. Charles L. Thomas, Emerline Thomas, Ida Roca(Thomas) O'Neil, Emmeline Thomas Washickek, and Margaret Harding, all in Arizona. Hope this helps.
Thanks for the reply. Ok, I was always told that I was Apache. It was never said that we were mexican. My grandmothers name is Carolyn Dawn Thomas, her mother is Elsie Wilson, her father is Charles Louis Thomas, his father Hinson Thomas and Charles mother is Inez Sanchez shes listed as mexican. Inez Sanchez is from Arizona. They lived in Globe city. I was always told that I had apache relatives in Arizona. On my grandmothers birth certificate her father(charles) is listed as indian and her mother Elsie is listed as french indian. Elsie is from Missouri.
I was remembering a conversation with my dad before he passed away and he told me that my grandmother had sometimes said she was mexican to avoid prosection. Maybe it was her whole side of the family? thanks.

Hi Larry, First, What was your grandmothers, and her father and mother,s name? Do you have dates of birth and death for any of them? Where were they born, and where are they buried? You state that you found her father listed as having a Mexican mother, but who was the father, and what does it list him as? He could have been Apache. Also, it could be another tribe, as, there were many tribes in Arizona. If you will post what is on the death cert. it will be a great help. Good luck.
Help with Jicarilla Apache name/word

Per an 1849 journal(later published as a book), I have learned that the word "CONE" is from Jicarilla Apache; however that source did not bother to give the English translation. Could anyone help me with this??? I know that the Jicarilla are not AZ based, however, I have had no luck in getting any linguist, university professor, or tribal source to give me an opinion.
I am asking this as my Ggrandmother was "Ada or Ader" CONE, who, per several oral, family traditions was born in NM on an Indian reservation c. 1874 and was later orphaned c. 1883 and taken by missionaries who later turned her over to a Presbyterian minister in TX. I won't bore anyone with the details, but she always gave CONE as her last name, and I suspect that her first name Ada or "Ader" was an anglicized version of "Ih-tedda". I would greatly appreciate any and all help on this one.
Regards,
Larry Coats

Hello. My father was part Apache Indian. His mother's side is where we get the Apache from. I don't know where or how to get information for her side of the family. Her father (my Great Grandfather) was a full blood Apache Indian...with the last name Flowers (was changed to Fowler to fit in with the American life). I don't know what branch of Apache where we descend from. I know his name was Charles Henry Fowler. From him, I don't know names backwards. I would love to be able to complete his side of the family so I can pass the Apache heritage on to my son. If anyone can help me, I would greatly appreciate it. I don't even know if this is the right place to post this...as I said before, I don't know what branch or where they are from. Thank you for any help you can give me or any information you can offer to help me in this quest.
My mother's side is of British/French origin but my father's side of the family is 75% Chiracahua Apache and 25% Navajo. Unfortunatly, many of my Apache/Navajo ancestors had both Apache/Navajo names and Spanish names they went by. Although I am still currently making a great effort to find them on tribal roles, I am starting to consider the possibility that it may be impossible. (lack of complete records, spanish language barriers, etc.) My great grandmother was from Colorado (Navajo) and the rest of my Apache family seems to have origins scattered around the southwest as far south as Mexico. Regardless, I have been studying Apache and Navajo history, culture, lifestyle for quite awhile now.

Even if I cannot provide such hard evidence, I would like to reestablish Apache tribal ties. I hope someone could help guide me as to how to do so. A bit of background about me:

I grew up in a community with many immigrants who could only speak English and only knew American culture...yet they always identified themselves as being Chinese, Korea, Japanese, etc. though they had never even been to their "mother countries." Here in Japan, when people ask me what ethicity I am, I usually refer to myself as mixed...American of Euopean decent and Real American. I feel I'm quite in the same boat as the immigrant children I knew growing up. I always felt like If I was one of them, I would want to spend a few years learning the traditional language and customs of their mother country. Before speaking with my own family about our history, I earned a scholarship to study abroad here in Japan. I learned the language, the culture, and have quite a bit of respect for everything here. After returning back to the U.S., I spent quite a bit of time with my Apache/Navajo side of the family. That's when I started studying the history and cultures of the two tribes. After completing my degree, I headed back to Japan for work but continued to study everything Apache/Navajo I could get my hands on. Without going too far off on a different topic, I was actually shocked to learn how similar the Apache/Navajo mindset is, some of the traditional beliefs are and how close some of the language is. (not all, but some is almost the same!)

Back to the point of this thread, I would like to reestablish Apache tribal ties and would like any help/guidance possible. My interest is more than just having Apache blood. When I marry, I would like to do so in Apache tradition. When I have children, I want them to be proud of their heritage and know more about it than I did when I was young. If I have a daughter, I would like her to have a sunrise ceremony. If I establish a family here in Japan, I would try to establish an exchange program for Apache children to come and see how the Japanese have kept their traditions alive and well with modern thinking and technology. I would love for Japanese children to see and learn about Apache culture and lifestyle. Maybe these sound just like dreams but I don't believe them to be too unrealistic.

Thank you for reading!
Any help you can provide would be truly appriciated!

RJ
