I have the same problem. Many Native Americans did not sign any of the rolls because they would be forced to move to Oklahoma or somewhere. They could hide and blend in with White and Black Americans. So you may never know the truth except in your heart. Native Americans were treated very poorly and it continued all through the 1800s and into the 1900s.

Iris

You will need to contact the Alabama-Coushatta Tribe directly to discuss DNA testing and you may need to provide something more compelling than simply sharing an extremely common surname.

It might be an idea to read some history of the Tribe first, before contacting them.

Kathy Roberts
VA

Hello. A few years ago I was in contact with a lady I believe was probably the tribe historian for the Texas Alabama/Coushatta tribe. She told me she was descended from the old chief John Scott, although her surname was not Scott. She told me there was no other person in the tribe now with the surname of Scott. I would like to pay for a dna test called a Family Finder test with someone in the tribe who is descended from the old chief John Scott to see if it is a match with mine. We have a John Scott born about 1823-1827 Alabama. His parents were William Scott born about 1790 probably South Carolina and Judith Unknown born about 1788 probably South Carolina. They lived in Fayette, TN in 1833-1850. Their son John moved to Pontotoc, Mississippi about 1853 and married Virginia Waite. He died in the Civil War about 1864. I am trying to find who his people were. We have been told this Scott family were Indian but have never found them listed as Indian on any of the census records. They have always been listed as white. But old pictures of their grandchildren look Indian. We just don't know what tribe. Thanks for any help. I sure would appreciate it.

Chuck, I am of Alabama-Coushatta descent and want to join the tribe (I live an hour south of the reservation). My grandmother (Betha Evelyn Cheatwood) always told us we were Indian (she is full blooded), but she never told us which tribe (I never asked until a few years ago). Anyhow, I sent an email to their rolls person, but I thought you may know more about how I can join.

Coushattas of Louisiana

I am looking for the Coushatta link in my husband's family. Have found tons about the A-C of Texas (I am originally from SE Texas myself).

Anyone know of any good sources of LA Coushatta genealogy info? I know of the Elton/Kinder area reservation; I am not seeking any compensation from enrollment in the Coushatta rolls, which I understand are closed anyway.

My husband's family are McGees from the Basile/Eunice/Mamou area; very close to Elton. Family legend is that Willie McGee (b 1890) first was married to a native American. His wife died very young and he remarried twice; my husband is descended from this first wife. Previous posts show a Clarene Celestine married a male Breaux (cajun name) around the 1950's, so perhaps the families are connected.

Other lines of my tree go back to the 1400's so getting stumped with my husband's great-grandmother is driving me nuts. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Stacy McGee
San Antonio, TX

My Johnsons (also found as Johnston at least once) included Benjamin B. Johnson born circa 1833. His wife was Rebecca Jones. We think his father was a Moses Johnson.

Data on Benjamin Johnson:?
# Name: Benjamin B. JOHNSON
# Sex: M
# Birth: abt 1833/34 in Alabama

1850 State: Alabama County: Tuscaloosa Page No: 356
Reel No: M432-16 Division: District No. 2 Sheet No: 180A
Enumerated on: December 14th, 1850 by: E. A. Powell
Reference: #16 Tuscaloosa
642 642
Moses Johnson 57 M W Farmer NC
Sena Johnson 36 F W Tenn
Thomas Johnson 17 M W Farmer Ala
Elasy Johnson 16 F W Ala
Benjamin Johnson 14 M W Ala
Cynthia Johnson 12 F W Ala
Sarah J. Johnson 9 F W Ala
Martha Johnson 7 M W Ala
Indiana Johnson 4 F W Ala

1855 Alabama State Census, Perry County, page 41.
Moses and our Benjamin (listed as B.B.) are found in Perry County living on "Brushcreek Branch." The enumeration, in alphabetical order by the area, shows Moses with one male over 21 and three females under 21; total in household is 4. That would fit with the ages of the children found in 1850. Since he married Sarah Thompson in 1857, it looks like Sena died before this census was taken. but no exact date is on the form so it could have been anytime between 1850 and 1855. Benjamin (B.B.) is listed as 1 male under 21 and one female under 21, total of two in the househeld. Since he and Rebecca Married in 1854, this fits. Also in Brushycreek, is a Benjamin Johnson (fully spelled out) one male over 21 and one female over 21.

Other Johnson's who live in the area are:
Thomas Johson, one male over 21.
James Johnson: 2 males under 21, 1 male over 21, 2 females over 21.
Frederick Johnson: 2 males under 21, 1 male over 21; 3 females under 21, 1 female over 21

There are two males named Jones:
Humprey Jones, 1 male under 21; two females over 21
J. A. Jones 1 male under 21, one male over 21; one female under 21, one female over 21.

1860 U.S. Federal Census, Henry's Beat, Pickens County, Alabama. He was living in Perry Co., enumerated on page 260.
1 male under 5
2 males 5-10
1 male 10-15
1 male 40-50 (ca 1795-1800)
1 female under 5
1 female 5-10
1 female 10-15
1 female 20-30

Comparing with 1850, Thomas and Benjamin would fit the 2 males 5-10; Elsey 5-10, Cynthia 1 under 5. That would leave one male under 5 unaccounted for. The male age 10 to 15 should be Olsey. Also missing one female 10 to 15. Probably married by 1850. That would be a birth year of about 1825.

In 1850, the family is in District 2, Tuscaloosa Co., Alabama. Moses was born in North Carolina and Sena in Tennessee. All children were born in Alabama; that means they had to be living in Alabama circa 1833 when Thomas was born.
1850 State: Alabama County: Tuscaloosa Page No: 356
Reel No: M432-16 Division: District No. 2 Sheet No: 180A
Enumerated on: December 14th, 1850 by: E. The family was enumerated on 28 June.
Shows Moses, 59 born NC, (ca 1801)
Sarah, 59 born Ga.,
Mathew 18 born Ala.,
"Indian" 15, born Alabama,
and M.A. , a female, born Alabama, age 1.

Is this the Indiana Johston, age 16, enumerated on August 17 in Pickens County, Alabama with Benjamin B. Johnston and family? It appears Sena died and Moses remarried. Sena and Moses married in Perry County, Alabama. There is a record of a Moses Johnson marrying Sarah A. Thompson in Perry County on 4 March 1857.

------
Notes on the Indian census of 1835, preparatory to the removal of 1838:
Johnston, head of household of 6 people, living on the Hiwasee River. This would fit the number of children and a spouse. There is also a Johnson family of five, living on the Valley River. This would fit if either spouse had died, or youngest child of the time period had not been born as yet. Jonson family aod six on Shooting Creek.

Notes on the Siler Roll, 1851, show family 61. "Johnson or Joncinnih 50 (refused to enroll, lives in Valley River, Cherokee Co., North Carolina); Jin-nih 30 w(ife), Yo-noo-kil-lah 4 s(on), John Davis 2 s(on). Census records put Moses and family in Alabama in 1850, so not likely to be this Joncinnih.
======================
Marriage from the Marriage Records of Perry County, Alabama 1820-1839, by W.Stuart Harris; from the record in the Judge of Probate Office, Perry County Courthouse, Marion, Alabama. "surety/perf. name: Absalom Madding."

The marriage record is a transcription. Either the date is wrong, or Moses married two different women, both name Sena, or census record is incorrect.. Using census records, Sena was born about 1814. I don't think she married at age 8. There is also a marriage record for a Moses Johnson who married a Sarah Thompson on 04 March 1857 in Perry Co. Perhaps the two records were transposed. Need to do further research.
---------------------------

Name: Moses Johnson
Spouse: Sarah A Thompson
Marriage Date: 4 Mar 1857
County: Perry
State: Alabama
Performed By Title: Justice of the Peace
Performed by Name: S W Blackburn
Source information: Jordan Dodd, Liahona Research

Source Information:
Ancestry.com.
What period in time are we referencing? Before the Alabama-Coushatta Reservation was established in 1853, there were a number of villages in and around Tyler County-mostly populated by Alabama Tribespeople. The surname that you list is unknown of the Tribal rolls of the Alabama-Coushatta Tribe and surnames within the Tribe are limited. Most of them are known to me. Apparently the town of Dies is no longer in existence. I lived in Woodville for some twelve years and do not recall this place.

I do not know if this is true. There is not paper trail other than the census saying they were Mulatto. They lived outside of Woodville Texas in a community called Dies. If you can locate them it would help. If not let me know so that I may research another Indian tribe. Thank you in advance.
Charlotte

I recommend you contact the Alabama-Coushatta tribe regarding the Crowe family. They should know if the Crowe name is associated with the tribe.

Also, try checking census records for the Crowe surname in that area. If the man was born prior to 1930, he should show up on a census with parents somewhere.

My father was born in Atmore, AL, and has the last name Brock. But, I recently found out that his biological father was in the Alabama Coushatta tribe, and sometimes he lived in Atmore, and his last name was Crowe. I believe his full name is Clarance Crowe. I have been trying to figure out how to find out more about him, but it is sooo hard. I know in Atmore there is a Crowe St. and apparantly that was named after him. If anybody knows any thing about the Crowe family in Escambia County or Atmore or in the Coushatta trib please let me know.

Mamie Arnold Price

My great grandmother was Mamie Arnold Price. As the story goes, she was married to a Price, possible Daniel. She was born 2/28/1898 and died 5/5/1962. Her mother died when Mamie was approx. 9 yrs old. Thus between the years 1905-1910. She had at least one older sister (Maggie, Minnie). Mamie's father left her with the Lewis family (Milam County 1910 Census). She lived with them until she married George Allen Enloe. I am looking for Mamie's TRUE husband and parents. There have been some suggestions and links, but I am not certain they are correct. My grandmother was at least 1/4 Alabama Coushatta, or possibly Chocktaw.

richardsfamilyof5@hotmail.com

Is it possible that you could post a picture and any more information. I am interested that there are possibly other Coushattas here in Alabama. It is hard to find info before 1830 because they did not keep detailed records then.

My moosi (by marriage) lived in and raised a family in Alabama. He was an enrolled member of the Alabama-Coushatta Tribe of Texas, ethnically an Alabama by birth and is now deceased. We still keep in touch with the family. There are no Smiths on the Tribal Rolls of the Alabama-Coushatta Tribe of Texas.

Dennis Richard Williams b. 1872 - d. 1951

I'm the gr-granddaughter of Dennis R Williams who married a Scotch/Irish woman (Ida Atkinson)in 1891. I have heard that Dennis was from the Alabama-Coushatta reservation, and that my grandmother (Bertha) was born on the reservation. Dennis, his wife and 3 children later lived off the reservation. In his later years Dennis lived in a cabin along the banks of the Sabine River where he died in 1951. I would like to find out anything I can about his father/mother, sibling (I have been told he had a brother), or any other relations. I have an old photo, and any help would be greatly appreciated. You can contact me at debos3@yahoo.com.

Many thanks-
Deb Osfeld

Just for the record, there are no Smiths on the Alabama-Coushatta rolls either. Most common surnames on the Livingston Rez are: Bullock, Battise, Sylestine, Celestine, Polite, Langley, John, Williams, Robinson, Alec.

Alabama-Coushatta grandfather b. Putnam, Marengo, Ala.

My grandfather was born about 1878 in Putnam, Marengo Co., Alabama near the Tombigbee River. He used the name Albert Thomas Smith. The Coushatta Tribe in Elton, La. had no Smiths on file. I never checked with the tribe in Livingston, Tx. Several years ago there was a small group of Coushatta's still in Alabama who had a website which I can't find again. I wrote to them and received a brochure about them. There are probably still Coushatta's in Elmore County, Ala. as well as other places. Just wanted to post this for all those searching. Not all of our Coushatta ancestors were registered with the tribe and not all of them left Alabama or even if they did leave, they didn't move with the tribe in Texas or Louisiana. My grandfather married a white woman from Mississippi and they moved to Southeast Texas and lived in a small town where he could find work. Unfortunately, he left his wife and four young daughters, one of whom was my mother (age 12 in 1930), and they never heard from him again. I have a picture of them together and what little my mother told me about him.
Good luck in your search.

Colabe Sylestine

The Alabama-Coushatta Tribe is small in number with a few over 1,000 members. Originally, there were two separate and distinct Tribes - the Alabama(Alibamu) and Coushatta (Koasti). Prior to establishing the current Reservation, the Principal Chief, Anton and the second Chief Colabe Sylestine led the Alabama Tribe into southeast Texas in Tyler and Polk Counties. I have informqation that Colabe's wife was Margaret. Would like to know her surname and Colabe's antecedents. My wife is a direct descendant.
