Tracing native ancestry can be very difficult. The most important thing is that one must trace one's family tree --- in the normal genealogical manner --- while one is looking for the native documentation. This is a concept that some people have trouble grasping. The best explanation is an example. If a person found their great-grandfather, grandmother and all the children on the Dawes Roll --- names and numbers included --- it would do no good unless the person can prove it is THEIR great-grandfather, etc.
RootsWeb has a genealogy course on line, and I have one, too, on Yahoo. Both are free. You can also check my main website which has some how-to articles on American Indian research.
