spacey1824

In the late 1800's/early 1900's there were actually more white people in Indian Territory than there were Indians.
When Indians Lands were opened up in the Land Runs, the region was flooded with white settlers.
So, no, the fact that someone was residing in IT does not necessarily mean they were Indian.

I found the family in the US Federal Census.
The 1880 census is free online.
http://www.familysearch.org

KR

spacey1824

No, the name Queen is certainly not "an Indian thing".
It is in fact a rather popular name in the 19th century.

And, no, as your folks were Free White Citizens of the United States, you will not find them "on the role", whatever that may mean.
They will be found in Federal Records.

Kathy roberts
VA

Hi!
I was wondering if someone could tell me more about a battle that took place in the Cherokee district of Saline Tennessee in 1838 during the Trail of Tears. My 5th great grandfather, Joseph Medley was killed there while trying to keep a relative of his wife from being forced on the march to Oklahoma . Any info will be greatly appreciated. Thanks.
According to census records for Knox County TN, your PARKER family resided there continously from at least 1830 until 1880, possibly later.

The Trail of Tears, which took place between 1838 and 1839, was the forced removal of around 16,000 Cherokee from their remaining homelands in the southeast.
Here's a very good site that may be of interest.
http://www.tngenweb.org/cessions/

Kathy Roberts
VA

I've been told that there is Cherokee & Apache blood in my family. The surnames I have are Sharp,Boyd,Burrell & Haygood. Does anyone recognize these names? If you have any information I would be very grateful if you could share it with me. I don't have any proof of the Native American blood. I'm trying to see if the heritage my relatives have told me about is true or not. Thank you in advance.

Crystal

I have 2 people that I'm trying to confirm actually existed. There have been stories about them in my family for as long as I can remember. The first is a woman named Gayfeather. She was on the Trail of Tears with her family. She made a ruckus so that her family could flee. They did flee and their families still live in Oklahoma. Gayfeather was shot and killed for doing that. The other person is a Cherokee Chief Joseph Burrell. My great aunt talked to a Chief in North Carolina. He said he knew who Joseph was but wouldn't give us his Indian name because he was famous. Does anyone out there know anything about the people I have mentioned? If you do I would love to talk to you. Thank you in advance.

Crystal

CHEROKEE TRAIL OF TEARS SOUTHERN ILLINOIS 1838

July 6, 2008

I am seeking information regarding the Trail of Tears and my ancestor's possible role, the Rev. James Newton Harper was an ordained Methodist minister. He is believed to have accompanied one of the later detachments from Eastern Tennessee starting out in October 1838 and on through Kentucky and crossed the Ohio River at Golgonda, Illinois in December 1838 before proceeding with his detachment to his brother William's homestead at Reynoldsburg, or aka Cross Roads, IL which is just a few miles north of Vienna, where he halted his travel but allowed the native americans to camp there for several weeks while the ice cleared on the Mississippi River and his band could cross over and on their way to OK. Along with James Newton was his family, that of his brother's William, and that of James and John William Sanders. ANY HELP THAT YOU MAY LEND WOULD BE GREATLY APPRECIATED. Family legend has it that James Newton saved a native baby when his mother died near Hopkinsville, KY and either adopted or raised the boy.
Have much to share for anybody that can also bring something to the table or help in any way.

If your ancestor had a child in Indiana four years BEFORE the Trail of Tears, she would not have participated in the Removal. She would not have been living with the tribe-- and THAT'S the people they wanted to get rid of, not "citizens of the United States" who were living in Indiana.

jc

Debbie-
If you'll go to the Tippah Co MS U.S. Genweb site, you'll see that the Whitehorn family didn't arrive in that area until after 1836 (per tax list) but William's father (Thomas; "born VA") was shown living there in 1840

It's a very informative site.

jc.

Working backwards, Oklahoma didn't become a state until 1907 and the Tulsa P.O. wasn't established until 1879. So in that time frame you should be focusing on the Creek Nation. Tulsa was on its northern border, so if you draw a blank on Creek research, you might want to go ahead and check the Cherokee records.

Both the Creek & the Cherokee Trails of Tears were in the early 1830s.

No, I'm the administrator of this message board and I'm trying to help you post the type of information that will make it easier for someone who does know this family to find you.

First, there were many Trails of Tears -- but I don't know of any that led to Shelby Co. TX. If you can find out where Frill/Freeland SIMPSON lived in Indian Territory before moving to TX, though, you'll have a clue as to his origin.

The only location you've mentioned that corresponds to one of these Trails is Dubach, LA -- and even that is several generations AFTER the Trails traversed the area.

IF you have reason to believe that your SIMPSON line passed through there in the 1830s, because it was a convergent trail they could have been Choctaw, Creek or Seminole. With luck, you may find them in one of those Nations and thus be able to backtrack them to their former homeland. That strikes me as a long shot, though, and is strictly speculative.

If you do NOT have any further information regarding time and place, your "Trail of Tears" clue doesn't shed much light on your puzzle. Translation: you believe that Frill/Freeland was NA, born before the early 1830s somewhere east of the Mississippi, was removed to what is now Oklahoma with his family, but for some reason left his tribal community as a relatively young man and moved to TX.

More questions than answers. This is a specialized board, here to help you if at all possible -- but until you can supply more information I think you'll have better luck with posts to the surname and county boards.

That's a bit of a stretch, as the Cherokee Trails of Tears were in the 1830s. There may well have been more generations involved than you realize. But the key point is that to register your daughter you have to prove her descent from an enrolled member and her quantum state. If her father's great-grandmother refused to register it's going to be next to impossible. I certainly don't mean to discourage you from researching her heritage!

Your right about it "not being likely", Debbie-- especially since they nor their ancestors had ever lived in any area that had been, at the time, inhabited by an Indian tribe. In case you didn't know it, a study done a few years ago by a university said that fully 60% of the U.S. population has this same "old family story" of Indian ancestry, and that further studies proved that 95% of those stories were not true.

John and Missouri had been born in Tippah Co Mississippi to parents who had migrated into the Tippah area from TN and SC AFTER the Chickasaw Indians were remove over their "Trail of Tears" in 1830. William, John's father- is shown on the 1880 census, living with John and Missouri in Lee County AR- just on the west side of the Mississippi river across from the state of Mississippi. William states on that census that he was born in 1818 in TN, and his parents were both born in Virginia.

Good luck

Jerri C.
Sorry to disagree, but I have researched this family before!

First, Laura Ann Strickland did not come west on the 1838/39 "Trail of Tears". She was still living with her family in Alabama when her brother, John Anderson Strickland, was born on 10 June 1840 - (parents: Samuel Smith Strickland and Aetna Jane (Jenny) Robertson- both "white" and born in KY in 1807. They were married 28 July 1827 in Lawrence Co. TN.).

After stopping over in Mississippi for a couple of years, the Strickland family did not even come to Indian Territory (the termination point of the "Trail of Tears") when they did come west!- They went to Searcy County AR and are shown on all of my records from there--.

The best source on Searcy is James Johnston, Historian and publisher of many books and Newsletters on people and happenings in that area. Also check out http://www.argenweb.net/searcy/

Good luck--

Jerri (Rogers) Chasteen
Claremore OK

I am searching to find my family I have founds names births and deaths, but what I am trying to find is if they were on the trail of tears, I am told that my Great Grandmother Laura Strickland who also married and was Laura Turney was, but that the family assimilated as White and that the Indian ancestrey was not spoken amoung the family as my Great grandmother had property that was not allowed for those of Indian ancestry. I was also told that many records were lost during this time. I think there names may have been changed once they came to Oklahoma. I have gotten alot of great information from people, I am not looking because I think I might get something other than knowledge, I just want to continue this that was started by my brother who passed away last year. I want to know my family. My mother,Lois Bratcher said that her mother who maiden name was Martha Wortman did not talk about her people, so it is all just a mystery as to why. and I want to know as I want my daughters to know. Any help as to how to go about this would be appreciated.

No Ajax Tyner that I'm aware of. These folks came mostly from Hamilton and surrounding counties in TN(the old Cherokee Nation), and settled in northwest AR and southwest MO. Eventually some descendents moved into the Cherokee Nation. They were mixed blood families, most of which were identified as Cherokee, but some on closer examination seem to have descended from the Catawba.

The best source, in my opinion, for any research material and or books on the Trail of Tears is in Cherokee, North Carolina at the Cherokee Museum.
The museum is a wonderful source for any of your needs and they are respected for their accuracy on historic events.
You may visit their online site at cherokeemuseum.org

They sell many books on the subject of the Trail of Tears, as well as, other historic events of the Cherokee. You may purchase books directly from their online site. I find that their prices are very reasonable considering their historic reference category. The also sell the Cherokee Roll Books.

I visited the reservation a couple of years ago and had a great experience there. I came away with a great reference library and am still enjoying my books.

Anyone interested in the Cherokee would be amiss if they were not connected with the museum. (I am not a salesperson for the museum, just a very satisfied customer.)

Good luck in your search. I am sure you will find the history of the Cherokee well worth the effort of learning.
Sincerely,
Mary M. Cares

When my husband was a young boy, his grandpa would read to him and tell stories passed down from his ancestors. One was a prayer that he had etched in a belt buckle, and I hope someone knows the words and details. He thinks it was called "CHIEF JOSEPHS LAST STAND PRAYER". This was just before Chief Joseph (Strong Bow?) and his people were moved from their homeland on "The Trail of Tears". He remembers that it had the phrase "I will fight no more".
Thankyou for your help.
Teresa

Re: forced march 1849?

I don't know if there was a forced march in 1849. I know that my Princes came from GA to Eastern AR right about that time. I had a 2g uncle born 1845 in GA and my 2g g'ma was born here about 1849. Her grandparents apparently came between 1830 and 1832. Her mother was Cherokee and possibly others in the line. Do you have an Ajax Tyner/Tyre in your info? Other families in this line: Hydrick, Barnes, Cooper, I think maybe Mitchell. Some of these families were in McNairy and surrounding counties of TN about 1830.

Tammy, I saw your other post also. Did your ex Michael ever register? The Cherokee agency is in Tahlequah, Oklahoma. All records are there. If he registered you can register your daughter with her birth certificate.

Walker [TN] married Moles / Mauls ... married Stephens [KY] .. HELP

I just found a much older cousin who remembers my gr-great grandmother [ her grandma].My gr-gr-grandma was
Sarah Moles [ also found spelled Mole, Mauls , Mulls]. My cousin said that her grandma, Sarah, was half Native American. </p>
Sarah Moles was married to John Stephens in Ky. Sarah was born 5/18/1856. </p>
This cousin said that her grandma, Sarah, & her father told her that Sarah's mother was Native American. This cousin said that Sarah's mother is buried near Russell Springs,KY. She is buried just outside of the cemetery, along the fence line, her grave only marked by a pile of stones.I was told that because she was Native American the family was not allowed to bury her in the cemetery.</p>
On Sarah's death certificate, her parents are listed as :
Jackson Moles and Amelia Walker .</p>
I have found them on the 1870 Wolf Creek, Russell Co,KY CENSUS as Jackson and PERMELIA Moles. Amelia / Permelia Walker would have been born abt mid 1820's to early 1830's I have Jackson Moles in Clinton Co,KY in 1860.</p>
So, my gr-gr-grandmother would be a Walker. But, of course , the family stories confuse things.... The story goes that 2 young girls escaped along the Trail of Tears & were taken in by the Stephens family. They ended up marrying 2 Stephens boys. That wouldn't make sense since Permelia / Amelia's maiden name is Walker.... her daughter later married a Stephens.</p>
Can anyone, PLEASE, help? Please e-mail me.
Cathy
crkp@svs.net
