1858 death of Pawnee Tuck a-lix-tah in Washington, D.C.

From the Holmes County Republican (Ohio) of April 22, 1858

DIED: Tuck a-lix-tah, or the "Owner of Many Horses", one of the Pawnee delegation of Indians, died in Washington on the 6th. Shortly before his death, he expressed regret that he could not have fallen in battle. His Indian weapons and finery were at his request buried with him. A large concourse attended the funeral at the Congressional Cemetery.

Hello,
My great grandfather was Francis Rudolphus Bennett (his father, and grandfather: both 'Rudolphus-or 'Rudolphos'). He was born in Canada, but raised in Vermont. I had heard of Native American relatives in the family (I am Caucasian), but never knew if it was the Bennett line. Pictures of Francis Rudolphus and his father Rudolphus show darker skin and features which seem to me to be other-than-Caucasian, but I have no hard evidence. I don't know if out Bennetts are connected...but since they were both in Vermont, it's a possibility. I would be happy to share whatever info I have with you if you'd like!
Thanks,
Maggie

A native Indian blood line is a very common legend in US family history! Usually it's just that.

I can see that Wood Pell and his parents are all listed as "White" in the census data.

Also, from what I can see in your tree, the Pell ancestors go back to England.

Which Pell ancestor do you think married a native Indian? (as far as you know)

My great grandmother was Ella Susan Bruce whose parents were Ester/Hester Farley and William Riley Bruce. Ester's parents were Joshua Farley and Mary Cackler.

I have a couple of family mysteries that I am trying to find clues to...

One, my mother was told by my gr Grandma Brown (Ella Susan)that her mother, father, or grandparent was Native American. She was told this back in the early 70's when Grandma Brown was still living.

The second mystery is on the same side of the family and involves a woman named Nancy Cackler. She is alleged to be a Shawnee woman who as a child was found and raised by the Cackler family. My father was told that Nancy was his gr(?x) grandmother. I have a photocopy of an old tintype of her that I would be happy to share...

Any information, clues, related family stories would be extremely appreciated...

Heather

Julia

American Indian People don't measure their ancestry by those standards of being "full blood" or 1/16 or whatever. It's basically a white/European concept, like dividing up their Tribal Lands and "alloting" small portions to them.

Being Indian, is just that.
You is, or you ain't. No "half measures".
And there's NO DNA Test to define individual Nations or Tribes.

Tell your friend to research his/her family history. Document every generation back 150 to 200 years.
Just to see if any of them were listed as Mulatto, Black, Colored or Indian.
(My own ancestors were listed variously this way)

And also bear in mind inter racial marriage was illegal from the late 1600's to 1967.
Transgression of this law got you jail time.

Kathy Roberts
VA

Maybe not full Cherokee, great grandmother could be!
Great grandfather from Maine so research Maine Indian
tribes for him.
Unless you were there, can't say they
only used Kentucky for hunting grounds, folk had a
way of hooking up regardless!
If you can find them on federal census, it will be pretty
hard to prove. keep going back and if she is keen on just
knowing, she might try researching DNA.
Don't give up, just cause some are not here to help!
Audrey is right about being full blood! maybe someone could lead you in the right direction or possibly already be researching these.
families.

Julia,
It doesn't matter what year it was and as I stated before, "in order for anyone to be a full-blood, both their parents, their parents' parents, their parents' parents' parents, etc. etc. would all have to be full-bloods." No matter what Clan a woman belonged to, her blood status does not...nor cannot...change. Can yours?
As for a white man taking an Indian wife, most marriages resulted from the fact that the man wanted to reside and live with her tribe for trading purposes, etc. These marriages were for more practical purposes...not the great love affairs found in most "family stories".
According to your take on DNA, if an Indian connection doesn't show up its not surprising...just keep trying till you get one that does! How many failures would you accept against one that came up with a possibility? A DNA test is not an absolute...it is merely a possibility/probability.
And again...the Cherokee were never in Kentucky. It was only used as a hunting grounds.
There are too many so called Cherokee websites putting out way too much false and confusing information and best avoided. Twila has a list of these sites here:
http://www.pollysgranddaughter.com/p/fraudulent-cherokee-org...
Can you post the woman's name, her husbands full name, where they lived and other pertinent info about them. Perhaps, with these essential clues, someone will be able to help you further.
Nan

The following links are kind of where I was going with this:

http://cherokee1838.tripod.com/cherokee_society.htm
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cherokee_clans

Both have to do with Matrilineal kinship, of which the Cherokee are one of the North American tribes that practiced this back in the day.

While the great-grandmother in question would be considered 1/2 Cherokee by standards today, back in 1884, when she was born, her heritage would exclusively have been with her mother's side. Thus, if family folklore is correct, her mother was likely full Cherokee. This could also be supported by the fact that a white man might take a Native American wife, but it would be less likely that a white woman would take a Native American husband...not impossible, but less likely.

My co-worker's daughter took the FTDNA Family Finder test, but nothing Native American showed up. At best, she would be 1/32 Cherokee and given the recombination of DNA (rather like a game of musical chairs as to who's ancestral DNA gets a spot in your DNA when the music stops) it's not surprising that it didn't show up.

I have suggested that my co-worker's mother take the Family Finder test (sorry, but I'm not too keen on Ancestry's DNA test) as she would be 1/8 Cherokee, if the story is true. Perhaps the recombination of DNA would be more in her favor.

I also found a map of Native American tribes found in Kentucky--before they were relocated to Oklahoma. There was a small section of Cherokee in the southeast corner of the state.

So...onward with the research. My thanks to everyone that responded to my query.

No, she would not be considered a full-blood. In order for anyone to be a full-blood, both their parents, their parents' parents, their parents' parents' parents, etc. etc. would all have to be full-bloods.
Hurt could be an Americanized version of a German, Dutch, etc European surname or...it could simply be what it is...an english word and surname.
As for your comment, "yes, there were Cherokee in KY.", be aware that the Cherokee tribe never resided in Kentucky and it was used only as a hunting grounds.
The only tribe to have much of a presence in Kentucky were the Shawnee, although they only had a few villages for a short period of time early on. They did use the state for hunting grounds also and crossed through the state several times through the years.

'full blood' Cherokee

I am trying to assist a co-worker with her family tree. She states her great-grandmother (b. 1884 in KY) was 'full blood' Cherokee. I have found this great-grandmother as a child on the census records. Her father (Brown) was born in Maine in 1832 and her mother (Hurt) was born in 1849 in KY. According to census records HIS father was ALSO born in Maine. To my very limited knowledge, there were probably no Cherokees in Maine so that would rule out any alleged Cherokee lineage on the father's side. This leaves the mother's KY side with both her parents being born in KY as well and yes, there were Cherokee in KY.

My questions are: Is one's Native American 'heritage' solely based on the mother's bloodline? Despite the father's apparent European heritage, would said child(ren) still be considered 'full blood' Native American, even though technically, they'd be half? Finally, the maiden name of the g-grandmother's mother is HURT. Could this be an English redo (and this is a BIG stretch) of a Native American name??

Comments and assistance from those far wiser than I on this subject will be much appreciated.

Thank you, in advance.

Stephanie,
I have already addressed what was offensive about your message. You even mentioned some of it. According to your post, it is no more than a "family story" and there is no basis in fact for any of it.
You've already given and explained why you don't think a rape occurred. Yet you still think that John's father was an Indian. Why? There is absolutely nothing that points in that direction. All records show he was white. Why not follow those records instead of a fairy tale?
Point to ponder...Do you really think it was possible for a white woman with one or two Indian children to live in a white community with one of the children speaking Cherokee...and nobody ever acknowledged it or talked about it...ever?

Hi Nan,

I am sorry that the wording of my post offended you. Nothing I said was intended to malign any group of people. I in no way believe that "associating with [Native Americans] was shameful and embarrassing...;" I meant only to acknowledge the unfortunate possibility that in the 1850s some of Nancy's family members may have felt that way. If you would, please help me understand what it was that you referred to as "all of the unproven insulting references to Indians, Cherokee in particular" in my original post so that I don't repeat my mistake.

Thank you,

Stephanie
After I got past all of the unproven insulting references to Indians, Cherokee in particular, i.e. rape...not once but twice, and associating with them was shameful and embarrasing...what I ended up with was no more than another of those unproven "family stories". This time, though, you added your own personal definition of what you think happened and then asked questions...and here I am to give you my answers to them...
1. You have absolutely nothing that shows your ancestor to be anything other than white. All records say white. He lived as white.
2. The only thing that mentions Indian at all are unfounded family stories. Why would you believe an unproven story over actual records?
3. You asked, "is it possible/likely that John's birth as the product of rape was a "cover story" for what was actually the result of illegal intermarriage between a white woman and a Cherokee man?"
My answer...it was more likely a cover story for hanky-panky between two white people, most likely a married man particularly since John went by his mother's name.
People were the same then as they are now and the scenario happened a lot more often than people today realize. There was probably no cover story at the time...that was probably added a generation or two later to cover the illegitimate birth and keep Granny's reputation intact.
4. You already answered your own question about what would have happened if a woman were raped by any man, no matter his race. There would have been a big to-do and there would be a record of it somewhere.
5. Why are you insisting she let her son learn Cherokee? That's just another unproven story. Besides...who would he have talked to in Cherokee? And just who would have taught it to him? Where's that part of the story?
6. Indians and whites had different ideas of what was beautiful and attractive in a mate. Why do whites always think that Indian men were absolutely besotted by a pale white woman? In fact, in reality, it was white men who married Indian women...but not necessarily for love.
Conclusion: Forget the stories and accept reality. Follow the records and find the true history of your family.
Nan

Intermarriage Question -- Native Americans and Whites in NC

Hi all,

As I've researched my family I found out that my great great grandfather (John Shehan from Stecoah, Graham County, NC; born 1851 to Nancy Shehan) was half Cherokee and may have spoken the Cherokee language fluently. John was nonetheless counted as white in all the census data and other historical records I can find. My dad had heard that we were "part Indian" on his mother's side, but I didn't know until I started my research.

According to family stories I've found John was "the product of rape by a Cherokee brave" when his mother was 19 and unmarried. I believe I remember reading that a second child, a daughter, came into the world the same way (but I'm not sure). Nancy married John Charles Mathis in 1852 but John kept the Shehan name.

My question is, is it possible/likely that John's birth as the product of rape was a "cover story" for what was actually the result of illegal intermarriage between a white woman and a Cherokee man?

Based on what I know of history, American culture, and specifically Southern Appalachian culture I'm not sure I believe that Nancy was raped. First off, rape was rarely reported in that time period and would have been completely off-limits as a topic of conversation in that society. It thus seems very unlikely that the story of Nancy's attack would have been passed on to John or his descendents. The only reason I can think of that this knowledge would have been shared would be if it were to cover up the truth, which may have seemed more shameful to the family (that she chose to have a child with a Cherokee man). Second, if such an attack had become public knowledge then the public outcry should have been so profound within the small community that there would be some record of the hunt for the perpetrator and his eventual trial or (unfortunately) lynching, or at least his disappearance. Within the family there would probably have been some story about the "vengeance" they had exacted from the man that would accompany the knowledge of John's conception.
Third, intermarriage was illegal in NC until the mid 1950s (which is crazy). If Nancy married a Cherokee man privately (or according to Cherokee marriage traditions) then their marriage would have been illegal and (possibly) extremely embarrassing for her family. Last, why would Nancy allow her son to learn Cherokee if she had been attacked by a Cherokee man? I would imagine she would instead have done everything she could to distance herself from the tribe or any reminders of it.

All of this makes me think that Nancy fell in love with a Cherokee man and had a baby with him, possibly within the bonds of marriage (although not legally recognized) rather than being raped. Can anyone tell me if this kind of thing was common during the 1850's or not? I just would like to understand my family's history and stories better.

Thanks,
Stephanie F
My current name is COOK and I received it traditionally, paternally. However, my Grandfather COOK (b. 1937, Nebraska) was the son of a half-Cherokee father (my grt. Grandfather COOK).

In addition, or where it gets super confusing for my search is how my great-grandfather COOK (Harry) told my paternal family that our true name is MORE, but it was changed to COOK during the Civil War.

Is it possible for MORE to be the name or taken name of a full-blooded Cherokee Indian during the Civil War? possibly to escape the slavery of the time?

I just don't know where to search for my paternal Cherokee ancestry. The name MORE would go back to my great-great full-blooded Cherokee grandfather. I don't even know if he actually married the woman whom would be my great-great grandmother with whom he would've spawned my great-grandfather with, Harry COOK, though I do know my great-grandfather Harry (More) COOK married a woman named STRICKLE.

I hope my query will post seeing as I can't afford to pay the Ancestry.com fee's, but have been searching for links to my bloodline and most especially my Cherokee bloodline since I was 14 years old, which is 18 years of searching for me.

Any help, please send my way, even if it's just a hunch, kristenjcook@gmail.com. Please don't send articles off of Ancestry.com because I won't be able to open them to see them.

Thanks a whole lot in advance!

Kristen J. Cook

It is the tree of Edna powers and Simon Bennett. This is my husbands maternal great grandparents. Simon was born in Vermont and Edna in Quebec . Our family tree is listed as the Prust/Kingdon family tree.
My husband's family said that one of the grand mothers, or great grandmother had Indian background but I don't know where to look. The tree I was looking on was blond native .
Thanks
Looking for a native American connection for the Bennett , or Powers branch of my husband's family. Your tree came up with the same listing as mine and we were told that there is a native American ancestor but am not sure which one it might be. Any help would be greatly appreciated

I am familiar with some Indian History, I beg your pardon and I mispelt Powhatan. But they are orig referred to as the Croatan or Pumunkey Indians. later called the Powhatan Confederecy , and yes some of them were later adopted into the Cherokee tribes. This is not misleading , I have it documented from the history found online.

Was her line by chance part orig of the Croatan Indians ?Pohattans who were adopted into the Cherokee lines as the Pohattan Confederecy fell apart. by the birth time frame you have provided- I would look in the old records bef. the time of migration of the Cherokee Indians for any ancestors. Old Rolls such as The Reservation Roll of 1817, looking however I do not see an Aldrich on that roll , the next roll was the Henderson Roll caleld aslo the immigration Roll, and her family apparently did not immigrate. Have you by any chance gotten hold of the Cherokee in SC to see if they can help you?

Looking for the native american connection to a Francis King, b. 21 Oct 1904 in Black Rock, Lawrence, Arkansas, USA who married Andrew Collier (1903-1980) then married Oscar Zude (1905-1963). Francis is reportedly 1/4 native american but am unsure which tribe. Am trying to locate her native american connection, tribe and tribal card, etc. This is my first step into the native american research and am unsure where to go next.
Thanks so much.
Wendi
whook29472@aol.com
