Two very prominent Nations in Alabama during the 1700's were the Alabama (Alibamu) and Coushatta (Koasti). Both of these Tribes eventually migrated down through Louisiana and into East Texas. Currently, the Coushatta have a Reservation in Elton, LA and the Alabama-Coushatta are near Livingston, TX. The Smith surname, however, does not show up on the rolls of either Tribe. It is interesting to note that "Indian Princesses" and "Chiefs" were so prevalent in non-Indian genealogy. In actuality, there were no princesses since there were no royal families. Most Tribal leaders were (and still are) elected, usually for life at the end of which, someone else is elected.
