I am researching Chief Colorow and his history in Colorado and am trying to trace his family lineage. I have a feeling that he was somehow connected with Ouray and Chipeta and their family - Piah, Ouray's brother, was in a couple of photos with Colorow's clan and supposedly upseated Colorow; Chipeta's brothers, Douglass and Johnson, were at Meeker, and Johnson was married to Ouray's sister, Susan. It's quite a story, worthy of a movie or at least a soap opera!

I have seen those census and wondered the same thing. I had put "free-trader" on that query by mistake. It was to be "fur-trader". There are supposed to be fur trader records showing Seth Austin with his Souix wife selling furs. I think the records were supposed to be in some books in Colorado.
My gr.grandfather was born in Hart County KY-- Thomas Austin, 1893- I noticed you are from KY. does that ring a bell?

Your message caught my eye. I am also looking for info on the Riggs family of Colorado Springs, Co.
My son's father was supposed to be 1/2 Cherokee. His Grandmother was full blood Cherokee. She and her husband, Harvey Riggs, and I believe other close relatives are listed in the Cherokee Tribal Records.
If you have any other info at this time. I am also interested in any Riggs that are Cherokee's from the Colorado Springs, CO area.

In regard to your posting on an ancestor named Seth Austin, I wonder if he might be related to another man by the same name I stumbled upon in southern South Dakota in the 1920s. The man I found is of an age (born about 1880) to be the grandson of your man. The Seth Austin who suddenly appears in our family tree was the sheriff of Bennett County, SD, in 1920 and was identified in the census that year as white, which I think is an error. In 1930 census he was living in the town of Martin (still in Bennett County), working as a laborer on the railroad, and was described racially as "mixed breed Sioux."
Larry Sullivan
Glasgow, KY
Just yesterday I found a man whom I believe to be my grandfather was listed as a student at the Fort Lewis Indian School in Colorado on their 1900 Census. All they had was his name, 1885 as year of birth, New Mexico as where he was born(which would make him Navajo), the sheet #, and location of this sheet. Any info would help. Thanks

I have a romantic family history story that I'm trying to prove-
My ancestor-SETH AUSTIN a free-trader in CO. He married a Blackfoot Indian woman. They had 2 sons-ROBERT & MOSES. When the Blackfoot woman died, Seth sent the 2 boys to GA and LA to live with family. Being that their skin color was so dark they lived as slaves. My Gr.Grandfather went on the underground RR to IL. Where my grandfather was born. I hope some one might recognize something about this story and HELP me!!!
Thank you-
Cheryl in IN

Is or was there an Indian reservation in Pueblo, Colorado?
The family story is that Myrtle Nora TITTSWORTH's father was full blooded Cherokee. Myrtle was living in 1945 with her 3rd husband, Charles W. FALVEY in California. She took her 12 yr old grandaughter with her and drove to Pueblo, Colorado to find her father who was living in Pueblo, Colorado with some indians on a reservation. The grandaughter, now 69 yrs old, thinks Myrtle's father's name was Johnny TITTSWORTH. She has a picture of Myrtle's family -it says on the back that Myrtle's mother's name was Alice BROTHERS.
