Surnames: Pechulis, Socila, Sucila
My Mother was tracing our family roots but passed away before I could get her information. Now I'm trying to continue but I need help in finding the family of Pechulis, My great great grandfather was Stiney Pechulis and came to the US in 1891. My great grandfather was Peter Socila or Sucila he came to the US in 1901. They lived in PA and they were from Lithuania. Does anyone know either of the family. If so please contact me.

It is highly unlikely that you'll find someone with information to help you based on the limited information you were able to provide.

You'll need to do some more research using the available American records for you to be able to narrow down where they originated from in Lithuania as well as their authentic Lithuanian surname spellings.

Have you found their arrival entries in the U.S. since you have exact arrival dates? In which censuses have you found them and did they ever file for citizenship? Lots of possible records for you to find.

What do you have so far?

try the Stephen Morse site at:

www.stevemorse.org

to search the Ellis Island database (EIDB). Check off Lithuanian, Polish, and Russian for nationality. Just use the first few letters of the surname (e.g., SUC, PEC) to start with.

The 1930 Census is the most current one available. Have you found their entries for 1930? How about any Social Security card appplications?

Best advice is to start with what you know and work backwards. Do you have their obituaries and know where they were buried?

Lots of documents out there if you know where to look.

No, I am not related. I think the spelling of Stiney's name is actually Peciulis, with an accent over the letter c giving it a ch sound, or Pechiulis. Sometimes recorded as Pecziulis. The spellings on census and ship's manifests are often incorrect. There is a marriage recorded in PA of Kastancia Peczulis to Peter Soczilla in the record book 1885-1910.

I am a Peczulis Peculis Peculius descendant and am looking to see if there is any interest in DNA testing/comparison with various Pechulis Pechulius male descendants. This may help all Peculis family members in locating the exact origins of their family.
