Abraham Joseph 1858-1943 and wife Catherine George 1855-1945 emigrated on or about 1899 to the USA from Syria. Eventually settled in Duval co, FL as grocers in the early 1910's. Seeking information on their original surnames, where in Syria/Lebanon/SyrianArabRepublic they came from as well as family ties and ancestors.

Leafbranch,

I was told by another ancestry member:

"Prior to the fall of the Ottoman Empire surnames did not exist there [Lebanon] which makes it painful to find family records. It is also true that the later surnames were typically the father's name; although if the family was "high born" then their title usually became their last name."

Just as an FYI as you start researching surnames. Hope this helps!

I also am having difficulty finding my ancestors from Syria/Lebanon, as they immigrated to the US at the turn of the century during the Ottoman Period. Any surname resources you run across and can share would be welcomed! I am researching Ghajar and Deeb of the Ras Maska/Tripoli area.
