Riudavets or Ruidavets from Menorca to Havana to Louisiana

Hope to find information on Riudavets family migration from Menorca to Cuba and then possibly to the USA. Looking at the time period 1820-1870. One immigrant was named Josep RIUDAVETS LLADO. Family lore says that he came from Cuba to NYC and made a living as a tobacconist before later returning to Cuba. His brother John Redavats (1802-1864) joined the US navy as a carpenter on a man o' war, and ended up in Dutchess County, NYS.

Any information would be greatly appreciated!

Alhaurin de la Torre

Cousins,

We had a nice visit from an official delegation from the city of Alhaurin de la Torre, the town where Teresa Gomes and her family, including her son Antonio Villatoro, and others left in 1778 to come to Spanish Louisiana. The local citizens and descendants of the Spanish founders of New Iberia were wonderful hosts to the visitors. The purpose of the visit was to establish a "twinning" agreement, a sister city agreement, between New Iberia and Alhaurin de la Torre. The ceremony, on Tuesday, 21 April 2009, was well attended. The Honorable Mayor of New Iberia, Mrs. Hilda Daigre Curry, officiated, together with the Consul General of Spain, Mr. Daniel Chamorro, and members of the city councils of New Iberia and of Alhaurin de la Torre. The establishment of this accord between the two cities is intended to foster ongoing exchanges relating to history, commerce, culture, education and tourism.

I wish to give my special thanks to Mayor Curry, and to all of the members of the local hosting committee, for opening their homes and hearts to these visitors from the land of our ancestors. I also wish to give special thanks to the members of the Spanish delegation, Sra Marina Bravo, Sra. Remedio Cueto, Sr. Manuel Lopez, and Sr. Jose Manuel de Molina, who are the first to visit New Iberia from the region where our ancestors lived, since the original founders arrived in the Teche country, in 1779. It was an historic and enjoyable event.

Lugarda Sonobia

I'm looking for more info on an ancestor, Lugarda Sonobia (this may not have been exactly her name, as I have found various spellings, such as Lugada and Lugadra in the census records here on ancestry, but this was her name on her son's death cert... her son was Leon Henriques and she also married a Leon Henriques, who was from the Philippines). The records I've found says she was born in Louisiana. One census record said that both of her parents were born in Louisiana, and one said that her father was from Spain and her mother was from Louisiana. Does anyone have any info. on her, or at least on the surname Sonobia (or a similar name) in Louisiana? I wish I had more info. to go on, but I just don't know much at all...
Thanks.

Hello. I'm looking for information on my ggg grandmother who was supposed to have been of Creole descent (French, Spanish and Native American). Her name was Elizabeth "Eliza" Steen and she was born in New Iberia in 1817. She married a Dr. Johnson about 1835 and they had a daughter, Mary War Nan Johnson, also born in New Iberia in 1837.

Would you happened to have run across either of these names while doing research?

Thank you.

My paternal grandmother was Elodie Sinitiere, daughter of Caliste Sinitiere and Caroline Dumesniel Sinitiere. Elodie claimed to be half spanish, but when I asked her which was the spanish she said it was the Dumesniel. Elodie married Paul Legnon. I have been successful in finding Caliste Sinitiere on old census records. He and Caroline had four children. Elodie, Laodice, Clement and Clemence. Laodice and Clement were sons, Elodie and Clemence were daughters. Elodie moved to New Orleans sometime in the early 1900's and lived there until her death in 1968. Clemence lived out her life in New Iberia, she was married six times and her last husband was Rene Thibodaux. The brothers, Clement and Laodice moved to the Port Arthur, Tx area. Laodice has one son named Lawless Sinitiere who was executed for murder. Clement had one natural daughter, Selina and one adopted daughter, Grace. I know that Grace married a man whose last name was Allen and she had one daughter that she named Selina, after her sister.

Like you, I would love to know more about the family.

I am a descendent of the New Iberia Romero family and presently serve as a Christian missionary in Ghana West Africa. According to a book called They Tasted Bayou Water: A Brief History of Iberia Parish, the Romeros immigrated from Malaga, Spain in 1778-1779. My father and I plan to meet in Malaga in late March of 2008 and would love to have any information that might help us locate Romero history.

Objet : Flores in Louisiana

The French translation for Flores is Lafleur. There are several Lafleur clans in North America, including Louisiana and Canada. Because of a tradition for French military personel to add an alias ( or in French, a dit name) to their family name, the flower (lafleu) was a popular add on to soldier's names. I suggest you do a google search on "dit names" to understand this phenomonem.
Albert dit Lafleur, André dit Lafleur, Cauchon dit Lafleur, Couillard dit Lafleur, Dugas dit Lafleur, Gendron dit Lafleur, and Parenteau dit Lafleur are names which have been shortened to Lafleur. Berza dit Lafleur and Andre dit Lafleur are two of the clans common to Louisiana. As with dit names, either part of the name was acceptable for identification. Persons with dit names could use either name to identify themselves or their family. As the use of dit names faded, individuals began to favor one part of the name over the other. Hence we have people with common ancestry, being identified under different surnames. Such as the Andre dit Lafleur family is now broken down to the Andres and Lafleurs.
A similar breakdown of surnames through language translation has also occured. Hence people of common ancestry are identified by names different through translation. Lafleurs show up as Flores and Flowers. Dupuis's show up as Wells/ Welles, Leblanc's show up as White, etc..
Lafleur is a name that gets a double dose of these name changers. If you think this is complicated, It isn't all.
Name changes result from many other factors; Illiteracy, recording errors , misunderstanding of names by officials, etc.. All this leads you to have to look at a bigger pool of names when doing Genealogy research. And don't forget to look at alternates for first names. Like Magdeleine, Magdelaine, Madelein, Madalaine, etc...; Marguerite, Margaret, Maggie, etc..; Celeste, Celestine, Celie, etc..
All this to say, that it is possible for a Lafleur from Louisiana to end up as a Flores in Texas. But then you will have to find out which Lafleur family.
His maternal grandfather was a Sanchez and his maternal grandmother was a Plaisance.

Their names were Andre Sanchez m Theodora Ella Plaisance. One of their children was Milda Sanchez who married Anthony Templet, Sr.. They were from the Donaldsonville area.

I wonder if we could be cousins through marriage?

Would you happen to know how I could order "The Canary Islanders of Louisiana?" It seems I've heard of it somewhere.

Re: Rendon in Rapides Parish

When did the Rendon family arrive from Spain? Did they arrive in Louisiana, or elsewhere? I'm curious, because I know of a "Rondon" family in Merida, Venezuela, South America who may be related via the original family in Spain.

I am related to Andres Rendon who was born in Louisiana around 1840. His parents were immigrants from Spain. He married a French-American, Olivia Ferrand in 1867. He fought for Louisiana in the Civil War. Andres also went by Andrew. Sometime after they married, he and Olivia moved to Texas. When Andres was 9, he was living on a plantation owned by William L. Morgan. Anyway, if you have any information about my great, great grandfather, Andre Rendon, please feel free to drop me aline at billzluv@aol.com. THank you!

Dear Marsha,
Yes, the Placencia name also came from the Canary Islands with Juan and Gaspar de Placencia. I suggest you obtain a copy of The Canary Islanders of Louisiana by Gilbert C. Din published by the Louisiana State University Press, copyright 1988. We are also decendants of the Placencia family on my father's father side, and the Sanchez family on my father's mother's side.

i am searching for information regarding the names of the parents of antoine villatoro, whose widow Terresa Gomez Villatoro, came with Francois Bouligney to settle at New Ibieria with her four children, Antoine, Junior, JUanan, Marie, and Delores. Also, any information regarding the names of the parents of Francois Balderas, who was alleged to be the nephew of Terresa Gomez. If anyone knows if Terresa Gomez, who was the widow of Antoino Villatoro, was of the sane family as the famed Spanish financier at the Court of the Spanish King Philip IV, Gomez de Salzar.
Dear Marsha,
We found the book about the Canary Islanders in Louisiana at the Barnes and Noble site, as I recall, and ordered it right over the internet. That was a couple of years ago, so hopefully they still have it.
My father was a Cavalero (Caballero) from Donaldsonville, and Marie Plaisance was his grandmother on his father's side. Dad's mother was Lucy Sanchez, daughter of John Sanchez and Leonise Fernandez Sanchez.
I'm sure your husband and my dad had to have some common ancestors.
We think our John Sanchez may have been the son of Andres Tito Sanchez but we are having a lot of difficulty trying to find any records to substantiate exactly which family he belonged to. Since we are not in the state of Louisiana we don't have access to any of the diocese or parish records not on the internet. Would appreciate any insights.

Armena Rodrigues in Louisiana

I am looking for information on my 4x great grandmother, Armena Rodrigues. I know that she was from the Canary Islands (or at least of recent descent of the Canary Islands), but I do not know the specific island. She was probably born around 1850.

She married William Shaeffer in Louisiana (Greater New Orleans area). They had 5 children, who all lived in Louisiana: Roeslla Mary Jane (my 3x great grandmother), William, Joseph, Annie, & Christina.

Hello to Jose and Friends,
Jose, I would be happy to donate whatever it takes to obtain at least (2) of any Gusman documents that are found. I believe they will connect sooner or later.
As we pursue them in Spain, I can probably donate for two at a time as the purse strings allow.
Perhaps this will begin our start.

Marsha
