Charles Rabe was born in Germany in 1837. In the War Between the States he served in the the 8th Louisiana Cavalry and was taken prisoner of war. He and Elisabeth Deutsch had a son Charles in New Orleans in 1859. Charles Sr. later married Elizabeth Vorrath in Louisiana where they had a daughter Louise in 1864. The family moved to New York after the War and then to New Jersey where they appear on the 1880 census with 6 children. A 7th child, Stacy, was born later. Charles Sr.died in 1890 in New Jersey.
