Am I of 'Irish Ancestry' or 'Irish Descent'

Hello, I was wondering if someone could give clarification to my question please?

I have a Paternal Irish Grandmother(my Father's mother), she and her family were from Ireland, but neither of my parents were born in Ireland, nor was I.

I also have a Paternal Irish Great Grandmother (my paternal grandfather's mother), she and her parents were from Ireland. So that's two Irish links within my direct paternal line.

I always thought I was of Irish descent but a friend of mine (who is a child of Irish parents but who was not born in Ireland) said that I was of Irish Ancestry whereas they are of Irish Descent... which is correct please?

regards

Nadine

Nadine, you are correct. You are of Irish descent. Our ancestors are the generations that lived before us. Pat

Your friend as we say sounds a bit snobby, you are correct you are of irish descent because you have a direct line of irish ancestry all the way back.
