Kumpis/Lilarikos/Lukosius/Draksos in Kartena, Lithuania/Russia

I am searching for information regarding the following family from Kartena, Lithuania/Russia. Some of the members immigrated to Chicago, Ill. in the early 1900's.

IGNATIUS (Ignac or Ignaz) KUMPIS - b. June 1870 in Kartena, Lithuania/Russia. He immigrated to the US around 1903, settling in Chicago. He was the son of IGNAC KUMPIS, who died before 1923 in Kartena. His mother was BARBARA DRAKSOS. IGNATIUS KUMPIS, b. June 1870, married:

PATRICIJA "MAGDALINE" LILARIKOS - b.in Lithuania, d. 25 Feb. 1936 in Kartena, Lithuania/Russia. She did not immigrate to Chicago with her husband, Ignatius and sons. She stayed behind in Kartena, and became a Catholic Nun.

CHILDREN OF IGNATIUS KUMPIS AND PATRICIA "MAGDALINE" LILARIKOS - all born in Kartena, Lithuania/Russia:

PETRONELE KUMPIS - She stayed behind in Kartena with her mother, Patricia "Magdaline" Lilarikos-Kumpis, and her sister, Aldofina Kumpis-Lukosius. It is unknown if she married or not.

ALDOFINA KUMPIS - b. 1891 and d. 1942 in Lithuania, most likely, Kartena. She stayed behind in Lithuania, and married Anthony Lukosius in Kartena, on 15 July, 1923. Her father, Ignatius Kumpis returned to Lithuania for the wedding. He later went back to Chicago.

JOSEF "JOSEPH" KUMPIS - b. Sept. 1896 in Kozceli, Lithuania/Russia. He immigrated to the US, settling in Chicago. He married Leokadia "Leona" Kurtz in Chicago.

FRANK KUMPIS - b. 1896? in Kartena, Lithuania/Russia. He immigrated to Chicago.

JONAS "JOHN" KUMPIS - b. 1902 in Kartena,Lithuania/Russia. He immigrated to Chicago.

The Kumpis family owned property in Kartena,Lithuania/Russia. They were supposedly well educated and possibly owned a flour mill. One of the Kumpis family members may have been a Mayor? Supposedly, the men came to the US to avoid being sent to Siberia, as it is said that the Russians were sending educated men from their area to Siberia. The Kumpis women were going to come to Chicago, but could not bear to leave their native land.

I have several photos of unidentified Kumpis/Lilarikos family members, and would appreciate any help identifying them. Any help regarding their family and history in Lithuania would be most appreciated, as well. There must still be family members in Lithuania, today.

I have Lithuanian family that we have heard originally were from Chicago.

Is anyone familiar with the surnames Glebaitis, Janczys, or Dykas? All three have come to a dead end for me in my research and I don't know if there were name changes or variant spellings? Any help is much appreciated!

Hi Algis, According to his death record, Kazimir's father was also named Kazimir, and we don't know his mother's name. We do know the family was from Plunge, and Kazimir was a miller or worked in a mill there. Unfortunately, that's all we know.

Martisauskas appears to be a common Lithuanian name. There were other Martisauskas families in Chicago about the same time as ours, but they are not related as far as we know.

Good luck in your searches, and if you find any connection, I'd be delighted to hear.

My name is Algis Martisauskas and I was born in Germany in 1946 as my parents were fleeing Lithuania ahead of the Russian front.

I have had quite a bit of research done in Lithuania into the Martisuaskas name and have names of my ancesters going back quite a few generations. The problem is that the trace was not done on all the family members unless they were in my immediate line. Do you have Kazimir's father's or grandfathers name so that I can see if they appear on ly family tree??

Lots of luck in the family search. If you r4eally look, there are quite a few Martisauksai in the US and I have no idea at this time if any of us are related in the long ago past.

Re: Looking for family name Guices-this is probably spelled incorrectly

Here is the information we know. My dad was born 1-24-1937 in Chicago Illinois to Elizabeth Stolinski. She was divorced and had 2 young boys from her first marriage named Raymond and Robert. When my dad was 2 years old she married George Kalas. He never adopted my dad. When my dad started school my grandma "altered" his birth certificate and listed his last name as Kalas. My dad has gone thru his life with the Kalas name. The name on his birth certificate lists John Guices as his father. I'm sure my g'ma spelled it wrong because she was a terrible speller. When my dad was born my g'ma and his father had already gone their separate ways and we believe it's very likely that his dad never knew my g'ma was pregnant. As my dad grew up he was forbidden to speak of his illegitimacy and my g'ma refused to tell him very little about his dad. She did say he was killed in WW2. We believe this to be true because when my dad was an adult she did show him a picture of him in some paper that was showing photos of soldiers killed in the war. She also said his last name rhymed with duchess. I hope this additional information is helpful! Thanks, Debbie

Zupienis name

In a book about victims of Soviet terror, WW2 era, there is a short entry with the name Z^upienis, Stanislovas son of Kazimieras, born 1917, lived in the town of Grinkiskis, in the Radviliskis district of Siauliai region. He had been released from a prison in the 1940's. This surname spelling seems close to what you had for the father of Anthony, and the town does match. I tried looking for the Zupienis name in the Lithuanian on-line phone directory, but did not find any listings.

When I looked at the Bremen passenger list to see what passengers came from Grinkiskis, I found Constantin Mesoka, 4/11/1907, going to Chicago via the port Baltimore MD, traveling with Iwan Ramanska. The Mesoka name is so close to Mostaka name you posted, and seeing as how the passenger is from the same homeown, it is worth mentioning.

I'm not related.

Zipsnis and he married Kristina Mostaka in 1910, they had 5 children and she had 4 children by a previous marriage. They all grew up at 1612 Sangamon Ave, Springfield, IL. Anton immigrated in 1900 and was naturalized in 1901. His parents were Augustin Ziupniz and Regina Gurskiuke. I believed they lived in Grinkiskisuke, Kovno, Lithuania.
Phil Ulinski

I know her brothers and sisters were with her in Rockford in 1930.I think her mother died before that. Thanks so much for alerting me to these websiyes- I'm going to have to try them.

I may have found the Ellis Island arrival of his wife. There is a Magdalene Ruscykas (Ruscjkas) arrived 4/24/1897 age 19 going to Scranton PA. she is with her family, father Adam 54, mother Anna 54, and Rosa 14, Agnes 10. I had no luck finding this family on the 1900 census and wonder if the rest of them returned to Lithuania. There is no town of origin listed on this manifest.

It is listed in book #49 which begins with Nov 1898, so they were wed in either Nov or Dec of 1898.

But I still could not find them in 1900 census.

Have you found his ship manifest? I found a Ellis Island passenger Petrus Weweris arrived 2/9/1892. I had to page forward to #37 (in the highlighted blue box) to view the actual manifest page. He is 21, going to Mt Pleasant, but no state is noted. Several passengers next to him are also going to same town, Josef Kalinowitz and Teofil Lukowitz. These old manifests don't give much info, so not sure there is anything there for you to connect to.

I did not find Peter and family in the 1900 census. Do you know where they were then? There are many towns named Mount Pleasant in PA, as well as in other states.

I'm not related.

I am researching my father's family and am not having much luck. All of these names ended up in Illinois but started or went through Pennsylvania and Wisconsin. My grandfather was Peter Weaver/Vavrys and his wife was Margaret Roskie. A sister married a Peter Ruskavage. This was all in the Rockford area. I would so appreciate any help. I have the censuses up to 1930 but I would just like to see some other connections.

Georgea,

The ideal situation would be for the diocese to photocopy the actual church marriage entries rather than relying on someone else to decipher bad penmanship and give you what they think they read.

Our parish priest sent my parents a copy of my grandparents church register entry from 1920 and apologized that he couldn't read it. Partly this was due to the penmanship and partly because it was written in Latin.

After some effort on my part, I was able to decipher it and decode all that had been written down.

If you are lucky, it will be an ethnic church where the pastor took pride in his penmanship and attention to detail.

Good luck.

Tom S.

Hi Tom,
Thank you so much for your suggestions. We have found that the Diocese of Peoria holds the records that we seem to be after so have sent off 3 reguests but they tell us it could take 2months so will sit and wait. The Sharkey children had no birth records, born before records kept it seems. The civi records for the marriage of the children aren't much help as father's spelling is Sharkey and the mother is listed differently on each one. So we continue to look at different avenues and look forward to what the Diocese can tell us.

Georgea,

If the church was Roman Catholic, then their records would have been transferred elsewhere. Have you contacted the Catholic diocese for that area to see who might have the records.

Any civil marriage license records for them?

What info is on the birth certificates of the children?

If the children were married in Catholic wedding ceremonies, then they would have needed proof of baptism. What did they use as proof if the church was no longer in existence.

There are still other routes to follow to get the info you need. You just need to be inventive.

Tom S.

Yes, our Stanley Sharkey died in 1910 at a hospital that is no longer there and the church that buried him no longer exists and the cemetery has no grave marker for him but another funeral home told me he is buried at the Spring Valley, Illinois Cemetery. A marriage certificate I can not find for either wife nor Sharkey as they were probably married in Bureau County, Illinois in the church he was buried through and that no longer exists. We are pretty sure the 1900 Census we have for a Stauna Sharky is our guy but not positive (Spring Valley, Bureau, Illinois) and are positive of the 1910 Census one with wife and children. Believe they married in 1901 according to 1910 Census.
The one we found coming to the states that someone found for us Stanislaw Scharke was headed for Chicago, Illinois, left Hamburg, Germany 2 Feb 1896 and arrived New York, 17 Feb 1896 on the "Prussia". This is all the information we have ever found in 30 years of looking.

So you can see my conundrum. I thank you for your continued suggestions. Maybe I should turn this over to "Who do you think you are?" televison program?
Thank you again. Mrs. Georgea Sharkey

Georgea,

When did you Stanley Sharkey die? He might have filled out a Social Security Card application in the mid 1930s which might list his place/date of birth.

Which of the U.S. Censuses have you found him listed. The 1930 version is the most current one until 2012 when they'll release the 1940 version.

Tom S.

No problem, I was even sent a draft notice back in the 60's! My husband's grandfather's name was Stanley Sharkey in the USA but of course that was changed at some point of him entering America. According to US Census's he came to America in 1896 and was Lithuanian and on the 1910 US Census he was listed as 32 which would make him born 1878. The Census says he was naturalized as an American but we are unable to find that no doubt due to the name change. One person who scoured the Ellis Island records came up with a Stanislav Scharke who left Hamburg, Germany 2 Feb 1896 on the "Prussia" and this was the man who came from this town S veks na, Russia. The age of this Scharke was listed as 23 so there is a 5 year difference in the census and this passenger record. The 1900 US Census has our man born March 1875 and listed as Stauna Sharkey. You can see my dilema at trying to find this man. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thank you, Georgea Sharkey Note: Stanley Sharkey ended up in LaSalle County, Illinois, USA in 1896.

George,

I'd suggest you join the Lithuanian genealogy group on Yahoo at:

http://groups.yahoo.com/group/LithuanianGenealogy/

It's a much more active group that the one you posted your message on.

Since Lithuanian was occupied by Russia (1795-1918), your Lithuanian place name would be listed as being part of Russia (Russland).

It appears the place name is written using a German spelling (e.g., SCHW). My educated guess is that it is the town of S^veks^na in Lithuanian. It is located southeast of Klapeida and 21 kilometers east of Silute. The 2001 census listed it as having 2,053 inhabitants.

Here is the URL for the town's entry in the Lithuanian Wikipedia.

http://lt.wikipedia.org/wiki/%C5%A0v%C4%97k%C5%A1na

Hope this helps.

Tom S.

My hope is only that the unknown variables do not overwhelm the search.

Feel free to email me any information about your search to raspusha@gmail.com
