Hi,

I am researching a Carl Naslenas, born 1893 in Lithuania. I cannot find one record for him under this name and was wondering what other surnames derive from Naslenas. He was supposedly living in Illinois around 1912. Thanks for any help you can offer!

Joni

HI,
Naslenas seems pretty close to lithuanian version (Našlėnas, Š - sh sound). On the other hand, Carl is not a lithuanian name, the closest is Karolis, but I think it was Kazimieras/ Casimir. What was his wife's name? Did he die in Illinois? When did he immigrate?

Edit:

I made ton of edits, cause of my annoying habit of skimming through texts.

Surnames: Naschlenas, Zirolaitis
Hi,

Here's the info I found after posting my message:

Immigration June 11 1912

New York, Passenger Lists

Karl Naschlenas
Arrival Date: 11 Jun 1912
Birth: Abt. 1885
Birth Location: Baubli, Russia
Age: 27
Male
Ethnicity: Lithuanian
Port of Departure: Libau, Russia
Port of Arrival: New York, New York

Ship Name: Czar
Occupation: Farmer/Laborer

Ursule (Ursule Oana Zirolaitis) was her name. and it was listed as Housewife under Karl's name. She was age 21, born also in Baubli, Russia, with Ethnicity as Lithuanian. Both destinations as East St. Louis, Illinois. They must have had some relatives already there.

I kept thinking - if you can't find him, maybe he left USA? You mentioned that he was divorced, then surely there must court documents, maybe they can shed some light on your ancestors fate.

I've seen the other post, so I concluded that Baubli is Baubliai:

If you ever want to research further in Lithuania, there's some links:
http://genealogija.lt/va/sar/ukmerges_inv1765_2.html (in polish, sort of census in Ukmerge district)

Or you could contact State Archives in Vilnius http://www.archyvai.lt/en/genealogical-search.html, but their research is not free.

edit:
Could he be related?:

Things do come at the right time! I don't know why, but I am always amazed. I had just about closed the door on the Naslenas name, and here you are with more info. Thanks so much for posting as it gives me more to chew on in the New Year. And please, have yourself a wonderful one! Joni :)

Hi,

It's a pleasure to help a little. Your Naslenas/Zerolis family seems very interesting. After googling a bit I've found this:
http://genforum.genealogy.com/lithuania/messages/9051.html

Then, thre's a tibit about Lithuania's soldiers during interwar period about Petras Našlėnas (1899-?), son of Kazys Našlėnas and born in Baubliai village in Ukmerge district.
http://www.versme.lt/sav_n.htm
Also, found Stasys Žėruolis(Zerolis in english) (1918-1945 in Baubliai village,Ukmergės), who was a partisan soldier.

Goog luck!

Joni,

The Book of 50,000 Lithuanian Surnames by Professor Vanagas lists 60 families circa 1950 with the NAS^LENAS surname. Some 20 families were in the Ukmerge area.

I think I've gone back about as far as I can! Jenny, who contacted me is researching a family of 13 kids, and I think the woman - Ursule - that I have been researching is one of these children. To go back further than this I think I would have to learn another language! If you find a book that lists that surname in the 1890s, let me know! :) Thanks for your help.
