My great-grandmother was born in Kovno, Lithuania, Russia in approximately 1890. Her name was Katherine B, with surnames of Ellis, Zenklusen and Smith. She immigrated to the U.S. in 1907 and had my grandfather in 1910. He went by the names: Rudolph Zenklusen (his step-father's name, I think) and also the name Ellis. She also had a daughter, Lucille Zenklusen in approx. 1919. The US 1930 census puts Katherine in San Bernardino, CA, but I think she left there shortly after the census was taken. I cannot find any information on her maiden name in order to further my research. I'm not sure if Ellis is a married name or a shortened (Americanized) version of her maiden name. I also think she went by Katherine B. Smith in the 1940 census, living in Reno, NV.
