I am looking for info on Bernard Hargrafen who came from Germany with brother Fredrick & possibly with sisters Mary Ann & Catherine. Bernard is my husband's gggrandfather. He became a naturalized citizen in 1836 in Jo Davies County, Indiana (I think that's the correct date). Some of the family kept the Hargrafen spelling of the name & in my husband's family for some reason (which I don't know why) they started spelling it as Hargrave. I've seen other spellings of the name such as Hargraffen,Hogrefen, Hoggrefen. Any info would be appreciated very much. Would like to find out who Bernard's parents were & who his brothers & sisters were. I have info on my husband's family if anyone is interested. Thank You

Hi Betty,

Just curious if you ever found additional information on the original Hargrafen family from Germany. My Gr-Gr-Gr Grandparents (Henry & Elizabeth Holdgrafer and their four sons) also originally settled in Jo Davies County about 1846-7). I have not had any success tracing the Holdgrafer family back to Hanover/Germany, and I'm guessing that our last name possibily changed spelling at some point. It might be coincidence that both families settled in JoDavies County, IL, but maybe there is a family connection here too. The four Holdgrafer son all eventually settled in Iowa (around Clinton and Haverhill) and there are now decendants around the U.S., with concentrations in Iowa, Minnesota, Califronia, and Texas. Please let me know if you have any more information that you're willing to share. Thanks.

Tim

Hi Tim,

I haven't any new info to share; haven't gone back any further than Bernard Hargrafen. It does seem coincidental that our families settled in the same area & the spelling of our names are similar. Most of the Hargrafen/Hargrave families are centered in Iowa, Minnesota, etc. the same as yours. Maybe we do have a connection. I'm willing to share my info with you, just ask away. You can e-mail me directly if you want, here is my addy lhargrave1@cox.net Thanks!
