Does anyone know of Andrew and Josephine "kostok", ages 50 and 55, listed in the Johnson county { Jefferson twp} 1880 census? The names of my relatives nearby were so badly misspelled that I don't believe that the spelling here is right. It appears that my great aunt and uncle , Josephine ,18, and john, 27, Lestina, spelled "leshkena" were living with them. {There is a long story about that.} I am hoping that someone familiar with czech spellings and pronunciation can help me guess if the Leshkena spelling could be the name Lestina, and what might be the "kostok" name in czech....
Thank you. Mary

The census taker might have heard Leshkena for LES^TINA . I am sure you know that Czech alphabet does not changes. What you see, you pronounce and write.
I find KOSTAK surname listing in city of Praha's phone book. http://phone.quick.cz
