Hello - I was born in Lydden Grove, round the corner from Wardley Street and my great-grandfather, George Gagen, lived in Wardley Street. His mother was Harriet Adelaide Bassett, her father David Bassett, who gave his occupation as 'bailiff' at her marriage in 1856, but I know no more about them - can't find them in any census records. This makes me wonder if they might have been travelling people. Is there anyone out there who can help me with this family? Talking of dark features, my great-grandfather was described as being 'swarthy' in army records and my father said that his grandfather's family all had very dark eyes. I think they had curly hair.

I came across your post quite by accident but it is of great interest to me as my family lived in Wardley Street. My great-great-grandfather was William Gagen, his wife Harriet Adelaide Bassett. I haven't been able to find anything on her family except that her father was David and he said his occupation was a bailiff (as given on her marriage certificate). Harriet was born about 1835. Do you know if Harriet and her father were related to your Bassetts? I have no idea what she looked like but I am told the children were dark with very dark brown eyes. My great-grandfather was described as 'swarthy' in his army records.

Hello, Jules - I have Bassett in my family tree, my 2xgreat grandmother being Harriet Adelaide Bassett (born approx. 1836), whose father was David, a bailiff at her marriage. I have no way of knowing whether they were Romanies or not, but the fact that I am unable to find any records for them, aside from Harriet's marriage and census records once married (to William Gagen,) makes me wonder if she was born while her family was travelling. She always gave her birth district as Wandsworth but I can't find any birth or baptism record there. Where my family lived for 100 years,in Wardley Street, Wandsworth, was a gypsy caravan site up until the 1950's, when the area was redeveloped. A lot of the census records state that the dwellings were caravans. I am told that there is still a gypsy caravan site very nearby, but I know that a lot of the gyspy families took the opportunity to move to council homes (as my parents did). What I do know is that there were some gypsies in that road of the name of Bassett. Unless someone can actually tell you that the family was of Romany descent, it's just guesswork, often based on their occupation. However, my birth certificate gives my father's occupation as a pedlar, but he was not a Romany, so you can never be sure.

In which areas did the families whose names you're researching eventually live? And can you help me at all with Harriet and David Bassett?

Thanks

SUE

Surnames: Smith and Roof
Looking for John Smith married to Priscilla Roof ( perhaps different spelling ). They travelled around Gloucestershire. One of their children, Freedom, was born in Blakeney, another(John) was born in Little Dean. John Smith senior was born n Coleford, a Forest of Dean. Any information would be welcome.
