Did your ancestor marry in Canada? If yes, might we think the church marriage record would have his place of birth? Do you have your ancestor's arrival manifest?

You said on Ukraine's board that your ancestor died in 1987.
Work backwards: his death certificate, naturalization intent & petition, church marriage record.
What was the maiden name of your grandmother? I want to assume that they were birds of a feather: common language and common tradition. Our ancestors went to a place where someone from the village or family was already established.

You might want to check into your father's church baptismal record. Again I want to think there
would be parents place of birth.
