I wonder if there are any relatives of Josephine Herlik Kaborek, and Terizie Herlik Svagar in Czech Republik or Bohemia? They had two sisters, Marie and Anna who immigrated to america in 1886 and 1888 respectively. If so, I would like to hear from them. I am Marie's grandaughter. These women would have been born in the 1870's

Hi
I may or may not have a connection here for you.
My GGrandfather brought his family to America.
Here is as much of the story as I have

Martin Herlik m. Barbara Brei in Austria, year unknown,
location unknown but the following villages have some tie to them:
Kout
Kyne
Myslivo all in Austria.
According to archives in Washington DC, Martin worked as an overseer on an estate of an Austrian Count. It is also reported that Martin served for a time as the burgomeister of his home village.
From this union, Martin and Barbara had at least one son, John Herlik in Austria. There is no record of any siblings.
John m. Maria Tauscheck (b. 2/28/1855) in Viertl, Austria.
The married in 1880, in Austria. No record of the city or day of the marriage. Johann (John) Herlik worked on a section gang on a railroad.
Three children were born in Austria, Anton, Johann and Marie.
Two more children, Franz (Frank) and Peter were born in the US. Peter died in infancy.
There voyage was from Bremen, Germany to Baltimore, MD. arriving in Baltimore October 16, 1890 on a vessel named "America."
They ultimately settled in New Ulm, MN.
At some point during the WWII era, Antoon's employer insisted he change the spelling of his last name to Herlick, which has been the family name ever since.

If you have a link to this story, I would appreciate anything you can tell me about siblings or this families origin in Austria.

My records indicate the "c" was added to Herlik in World War One at the instance of a Phillip Liesch, a newspaper publisher in New Ulm, MN. New Ulm was under considerable pressure to "Americanize" itself during WW1. Thus German Park was renamed Liberty or Victory park or something similar.

I have since heard another story from a very repliable source; that the "c" was added to "de-Jewish" the name. This source claimed that "Herlik" was Jewish. Frankly, this story makes more sense to me than the first version. After all, almost everyone in New Ulm, MN, during WWI had German names and Herlick doesn't seem any less German to me than Herlik

Hi.
Herlik (Herdlik, Hrdlik, Herlick)is old Bohemian surname which is origin from "hrdy" = pround. It was in Bohemian's regions where people spoked to 1945 Geman written sometimes with "c" - Herlick. Lot of s.c. Geman-Bohemians settled down in New Ulm, Min.
Families Herlik lived and still live in southwest Bohemia in Domazlice area.
All the best.
Tony.

I am from nearby Mankato and have Herian and Barta relatives from Domazlice and the village of Horsovsky Tyn in Southwest Bohemian. They arrived in the states in the 1870's and settled in Wisconsin.
