Hi Manaia,
Not sure if this helps , but.....
My g/grandfather was from Canton but migrated to Australia. The name he used in Australia was "Ah CUE" but I have seen references to him as "Ah KEW" And "Ah Cwe. He married in Victoria, Australia in 1869 and luckily for me, he signed the marriage register with his chinese character. I have had this signature translated by the Chinese Embassy in Canberra, and they tell me it is the name "Qiao" (pronounced 'kyuh') and it means "Bridge" but it is definitely also used as a family name.
http://www.cantonese.sheik.co.uk/dictionary/characters/98/There is also some information on this name on the following website which might help, the symbol shown on this webpage is positivrly the same as my g/granfather's. Perhaps you KEW/CHEW are of this clan.
Cheers,
Barry H.
