Looking for information on the parents of John Stewart b. 10 Aug 1797 Blair Athol. They are Patrick Stuart and Janet Stuart (note: these are the spellings in the IGI) married 10 Sept 1796 in Moulin.

John emigrated to Ontario, Canada in August of 1847 but I don't have anything more on his parents or know if there are any siblings.

Admin Note re Genealogical Posts to the Clan Stewart Board & List

Dear Clan Stewart Posters:

Please bear in mind that the genealogical portion of the Clan Stewart list and board should keep within the time frame of the Clan System being active in Scotland. This would be up through 1745-47 as it was quashed following the Jacobite Wars.

Should you post genealogical queries to the Board and find them "deleted", take a look to the Stewart Surname Board as I likely have moved them to the surname board where they are more appropriate to the topic. [If you have a varient spelling used in your post, they may be moved to a board that shares that spelling,if it exists, otherwise they will go to Stewart .]

This is not to say that the Clan Stewart list and board are not for genealogical queries and posts. This is to provide a reminder that they are CLAN specific and not general in time and place. Period circa 1000 through 1747 and Scotland, Ireland, Europe in geographic nature. Think of those under the Clan system and where they would have been, as such. Where and when their Chiefs resided, origins of the name and time frame/locations descended from.

Remember that clan lists and boards are more inclusive than strictly Genealogy and History, but that there are guidelines as posted by John Hansen when he created the Boards.

If you are looking for general genealogy of the Stewart Family, then the Stewart surname list and board is where to find it.

If you are looking to find out more about Clan Stewart then this is the board and list for you. They are clan specfic, not genealogy specific. Genealogy on this board and list is focused on that of the Clan era... up through circa 1747 and only in the areas of the Scottish clans... Scotland, Ireland and a bit of Europe. Not the USA, Canada or Australia, etc.

To subscribe to any list at Rootsweb, send a message to
listname-request@rootsweb.com where "listname" is substituted for the name of the list.
ie. stewart-request@rootsweb.com

Yours Aye,

Lauren M.
Hi Lauren: Thanks again for your reply. The McGlashing name through the years has been spelled many ways - MacGlashan being one of them. I guess this leads me to think the name would come under Stewart of Atholl from what I've been able to find on line. Now would Clan Stewart of Atholl also be part of - The Stewart Clan? Thanks again. Sandi

Hello Lauren: Thanks so much for answering my post, I appreciate you taking the time. In looking into different websites, earlier I can across information that lists MacGlashan under Stewart of Atholl Clan, would you feel that would be correct? Thanks so much for any help or direction as I'am just starting my search. Sandi

STEWART OF ATHOLL -Conacher, Cruickshank(s), Duilach, Garrow, Gray, Larnach, MacGarrow, MacGlashan

MacGlashing is not listed.

I checked "Surnames of Scotland" by George Black. It does not list MacGlashing in the etymology of the name MacGlashan. I suppose the spelling could have been "corrupted" and not hit the Scottish records at all.

Yours Aye,

Lauren
Chair, Genealogical Committee
Genealogist
Clan Stewart Society in America, Inc.
http://www.clansstewart.org
Just a couple of additional notes, James Stewart of Traquair was also variously styled James Stewart of of Kirkland, of Innerleithen, and of Schillinglaw, the last being the most commonly used. Also, in addition to being a half-3rd (-1) cousin to Mary, Queen of Scots, he was 8th cousin to her first husband, Francois II, King of France, and 3rd cousin (-3) to her second husband, Henry Stuart, Lord Darnley.

Jim
James Stewart of Traquair (d. 9 Mar 1607) m. Catherine Kerr (d. 28 Feb. 1606) [SP VIII:401] was half-3rd cousin -1 to Mary "Queen of Scots." Their common ancestor appears to be Robert III, King of Scotland.

James was the youngest son of William Stewart of Traquair and Christian Hay, William being the eldest son of James Stewart of Traquair and Christian Rutherford. This James, in turn, was an illegitimate son of Sir James Stewart, Earl of Buchan and Margaret Murray [SP VIII:399-401].

Hope this helps.

Jim

I don’t have a date of birth for her, but 1325 would be closer to her mother's date of birth than her own. "She was very young at her father's death [1261], perhaps seven years old." Margaret was the daughter of Thomas Stewart, 2nd Earl of Angus and Margaret St. Clair (dispensation to wed 1353). In an arrangement with her sister Elizabeth, she took the title Countess of Angus and Mar [SP I:170-1].

Jim

I have done so.

In the year since I posted this inquiry I have managed to learn much. Perhaps I should update my initial inquiry:

The origins of the Ardvorlichs is known and my research can be found here:
http://www.chuckspeed.com/balquhidder/balquhidder%20stewarts...

I have managed to link my earliest directly connected ancestor, Robert Stewart (b.1775) of St. Fillans, Comrie, Perthshire to his ancestor, John Dhu Mohr Stewart (b.ca.1630) of Dalveich, Lochearnside, Balquhidder, Perthshire. John Dhu Mohr was the illegitimate son of Major James Beag Stewart, 2nd Ardvorlich (who murdered Lord Kilpont). John Dhu Mohr was chief of a clan in Dalveich, which is just across Lochearn from Ardvorlich.

The relationship between John Dhu Mohr Stewart and his descendant, Robert Stewart of St. Fillans, is demonstrable, however the direct line has not yet been proven, so my search has now narrowed to the Stewarts of Dalveich.

Does anyone have knowledge of, or is anyone else researching, the Stewarts of Dalveich, Lochearnside, Balquhidder, Perthshire, Scotland during the 17th and early 18th centuries?

Ryk Brown
Hamilton, Ontario, Canada

Dear Ryk:

I am not an "expert" on Ardvorlich, however, I do have a photocopy of one of the 9 remaining copies of "The Heraldry of the Stewarts, with notes on all the males of the family, descriptions of the Arms, plates and pedigrees" a rare book authored by G. Harvey Johnston. It lists:

"Murdoch Stewart, Duke of Albany and Earl of Fife, also Earl of Menteth (S.) in the right of his mother Margaret, Countess of Menteth. The Duke left the following sons: ---

(a) Robert of Fife, died without issue 1421.
(b) Walter of Fife, executed 1425
(c) Alexander, executed 1425
(d) James had a natural son, James Beg, whose descendants are the Stuarts of Annat, Stewarts of Ardvorlich, Baldoran, Ballachallan, Craigtoun, Duchlash, Gartnafuaroe, Glassingall, Glenbucky, Hyndfield, Ledcreich.

Arms of Stuart of Annat, same as Ardvorlich, but with black mullet in the centre of the quarters (Burke).

Arrms of Ardvorlich, recorded 1802. --- 1 and 4. Scotland. 2. Gold, a fess chequy blue and silver, in chief a red mullet. 3. Silver an engrailed saltire between four roses red. All within an engrailed bordure compony, blue and silver. Crest: A right hand and arm couped at the elbow brandishing aloft a broad-sword, all proper.

Motto: "Deo juvante vinco" (Lyon Register)"

The arms are "quartered" -- having 4 sections. To be "proper" is to be of natural colors or tincture.

I hope this is of help to you.

Yours Aye,

Lauren
Chair, Genealogical Committee
Genealogist
Clan Stewart Society in America
http://www.clansstewart.org

Re: Are all Stewart's Scottish?

Ethnically, the name is Scottish, but like every other surname the Stewarts have migrated literally everywhere. Indeed, as others have stated, the line originated in France with the Normans. The first Stewart being Robert FitzAlan. The name has a very humble beginning, originating from the two root words "Sty- Warden", a nice name for pig keeper. The name developed into one that reflected a "steward" or "exchequer". Since the Celts originally considered wealth by the amount livestock one owned a counter of livestock or a "sty warden" developed into a "steward" or in gaelic "Stuibhard", a fancy name for basically a tax collector.
On the Stewart coat-of-arms the exchequer past in evident in the 3 bands of white and blue checks which run across the shield.
The name would change in spelling depending upon where the Stewart migrated to. If they moved south and had contact with the Norman English the name would be spelled "Stuart" and so on.
If you know where in Scotland (or England) your Stewart family came from you can usually tell which sept or clan you can claim heritage from. There are many branches; Stewarts of Bute, Black, McAlpine, Atholl, Appin, and lots of people who believe they are Royals.....very small chance of that as a direct line but perhaps as a cousin.
Also, at least in my case, the spelling of my name has change back and forth 4 times in 300 years. So, before you decide that you know for certain check all the details!

Hope that helps!
Paul Stewart

I only have information back to my gg grandfather. I am not certain he was born in the US. If someone were trying to locate Stewart's in the UK, would she be looking for them all to be part of Scottish clans. Someone once told me that Stewart's could be English, also. Sorry, if that is incorrect.

Hi,

I am from Canada and have traced my Stewart ancestry back to St. Fillans (near Comrie), Perthshire late 1700s (emigration ca. 1833). I have names, dates, and places for births and marriages, and information on a possible connection to the Stewarts of Ardvorlich, but I can't be sure.

I am looking for a little "leg up" from someone who knows more about the Ardvorlichs than I have yet been able to learn. I am NOT looking for someone to do my research for me, just someone who might be able to point me in the right direction or answer some questions. Any help would be appreciated.

Any Ardvorlich experts out there?

Ryk Brown
Ontario, Canada

Ok, Send me your e-mail address, and get ready to be dazzled. And by the way, I think that King Robert 11 neice who married a Fraser, although spelled in the research of someone else is spelled Frazier, that we are distance cousins. Probably around 14 or so, My sister has managed trace back to our Fraser heritage to the 11th century.

These silver objects found me! I think. I found through my research on silver that ancient people and religions believed silver to hold not only religious powers, but also supernatural, this may be apparent why the early church hord so much silver. I have asked my sister to bring back her research on Fraser, and how they relate to the Royals of Scotland throughout different times in history. I'll give details of this amazing story how I found the object in my e-mail. Also, if you know of any professor who can varify these silver objects please lead me to him or her, because I think the original owner of these objects, (that is the spirit) is using me as a medium to find it's way home.

Not exactly what you are looking for, but you must be a direct descendent from King Robert the 11 and 111 are you, or close direct desendent. If so, I have something interesting to show you, because that would be from the 1st King of the Stewart lineage. I'm also looking for professional research people to varify the item I found.

Dear Paul:

For starters I would suggest subscribing to the
Stewart list at Rootsweb. There has been an ongoing
discussion of Stewart roots for many years. Many of
the Clan Society members belong to the list. I have
found the level of posts, when I have been subscribed,
to be very good and may be more achedemic than on other
lists.

I would also look to the Stewart bulletin boards that
Clan members had posted to over the years.

And I would check with a large library in your area
to see if they have the Stewart Clan Magazine in their
research area. The publication has been out of print for
many years, but had been printed for about 30 if memory
serves. I believe it held about 50 years of genealogical
queries and research.

The only true way to determine which branch of the Stewart
Houses or cadets or branches your line *may* descend from
is to trace your Stewart genealogy. There is no Stewart Black branch. There is a Black Stewart tartan. Most likely
you are not a "Royal" Stewart, however, may have descended from an original line. There were Stewarts everywhere, so
without doing the genealogy to compliment the geography you
may find Stewarts in you would still be guessing.

Kind Regards,

Yours Aye,

Lauren Boyd
Chair, Genealogical Committee
Genealogist
Clan Stewart Society in America, Inc.

Margaret Stewart, Countess of Angus - Scotland, 1325

Hi. I'm looking for any information on my Stewart ancestors, begining with Margaret Stewart, Countess of Angus who was born in 1325. She was the mistress of William Douglas, Earl of Douglas and had at least one child by him, a son, George Douglas, First Earl of Angus.

George married Mary Princess of Scots (daughter of King Robert Stewart III and Annabella Drummond) on May 24, 1397 in Scotland and had 3 children by her: Elizabeth "Mary" Douglas - Lady Forbes (by marriage) b. approx. 1398, Sir William Douglas - 2nd Earl of Angus b. approx. 1399, George Douglas - 4th Earl of Angus b.approx. 1404. George died of the plague and Mary subsequnetly remarried 4 times.

But I could go on and on about the descendants of Margaret Stewart, but that's not what I'm typing this for. I would dearly love to know if anyon has anymore information on Margaret Stewart, Countess of Angus, the mistress of William Douglas - Earl of Douglas. Thanks for reading.

Dear All:

This thread is intended for posting of current URLS of other
web-sites that have information on the history or information
on the Surname or Clan. These web sites can include
archives, libraries, or just the Clan or Sept web site etc
So Clan Secretaries can keep this thread current or just
a interested member of the surname that has the
web site for their own family.

Please reply to this post and change the subject heading to
the name of the web site that is posting the news. Then keep that
thread current with news etc of your web site ( change of
address etc)

The benefit of having your own thread here is that you can
post the URL in newsletter or emails etc to newsgroup or
mailing lists etc. That way, any interested parties of the
Clan, Sept, or even a unique family group can always come
to your own web site for news and information.

The posting here will also be visible for an extended period vs
the short retention time of the mailing lists.

Please feel free to post this notice to other surname
message boards and mailing lists that would be
interested in this new message board.

Best Regards
John A Hansen
Message Board Admin

Directions to site:

www.rootsweb.com
> Boards
> Topics
> Ethnic/Race
> Celtic
> Scottish Clans

Ancestors postings

Dear All:

Please start a separate sub-thread under this
thread ( just do a reply) for each Clan ancestor.

The thread on this board (and the mailing list) is intended for
comments, hints on how to locate, and discussions
on those distant ancestors ( sometimes brick walls) that are
very hard to locate. Anyone with knowledge of the
Clan Ancestors or searching for ancestors and especially
the Clan Genealogist are especially encouraged to post
their finding on the Clan ancestors.

Please do not use this board for merely looking for
recent descendants. That function is better in the
Surname message boards and mailing lists.

Use the standard procedure in the subject header of
inserting your family ancestor information in the following format
NAME > location > dates

Best Wishes and Happy Hunting to All

John A Hansen
Board Admin
Clan and Associations postings

Dear All:

This thread/topic is intended as a forum for the
Clan to post their Notices and the Clan Associations
to post their web sites, notices of meetings and
gatherings. Even Newsletters ( by permission of the
Clan officials) are permitted here.

The correct procedure for posting here is to:
A: do a reply to this message. Erase the subject heading
above and then >
B: enter the name of your association and connection
to the clan.
C: Follow on postings are then replied to that unique
association. I would think that subject and dates
would then be appropriate subject headings.

The intention is to allow the Clan to have a thread
and each respective association to have a thread that
it can maintain with its newsletters and notices.
That way the basic thread of the association can be
referenced by URL in emails and other web sites.

Please forward this message to the Clan headquarters office,
its international associations and
other affiliated groups that may be interested in
posting here. Posting this notice to the Surnames message boards
and Surname mailing list or sending to Secretary of the
Clan, the Clan Associations and the Septs of the Clan
would also be appreciated.

Best Regards
John A Hansen
Board Admin
