Hello everyone,

I have found this message most interesting as I am a from this hunter linage.

I am from Tennessee but have researched the Hunter family to Virginia. My ancestors received a land grant shortly after the Revolutionary War, and the land grand was for the Hunter's, Hunt's, Teasley's, and Sharon Families.

However back to the information. I have gone back to William Hunter Born in 1650 was a weaver and came to America. American notes say he was from Alnwick. But I have A Christening record for him in Newcastle upon Tyne in 1666. Is father is listed as William Hunter as well Born abt 1624.

However, from stories from my uncle Dempsey, who was a 102 in the late 70s. he and I had long discussions regarding the hunter family. And according to him, we are from the Hunter Clan, and the head of the family is the Laird of Hunterston. Scotland. But I have not found the connection as of yet. But I would be happy to share any information.

Hi Bill,

My surname is HUNTER. My earliest known HUNTER ancestor is James, born August 14, 1778. He was born in PA or Ireland. He supposedly went to Loudoun Co., VA sometime after 1778. He then traveled to Gallatin county, KY., where he married Rachel SCOTT on March 14, 1806. He raised 9 children in Gallatin county, Ky. He moved his whole family to Sangamon county, IL., in December 1828, where he live until his death on April 23 1867. Any connections?

Greg Hunter fightingirish1@mac.com

Hi Judith,

Do you know when your HUNTER's arrived in the U.S.? My James HUNTER was born August 14, 1778/9. On the last two census of his life, 1850 & 1860, he said he was born in Pennsylvania. In 1980 census, his eldest daughter, Elizabeth, said her father was born in Ireland. James died April 23, 1867. Could he have been a stowaway? Ha, maybe.

I have HUNTER connections to DICKERSON (not DICKENSON). Of my James HUNTER's 9 children, 3 married DICKERSON's in Illinois between 1832 - 1841. Any connection?

Greg fightingirish1@mac.com

Hello Bill, My father's surname was Hunter. I have run across Boyd (Anna Maria, Bayard, Charlotte Lansing, Edward Antill, Elizabeth L, etc.), Dickenson, Thompson (Christina J, John, and Mary) related to the Hunter family. I am investigating the "brothers" who came from Ireland after their relative emigrated from Scotland. From Ireland, they came to the USA, with one of the first sons (James) landing in Baltimore, MD. His family eventually went to Sterling Valley, NY. I am working with the town historian from Sterling to locate as much informatin as I can. Other brothers were: William, Thomas, Alexander, John, Fletcher, and David. Does any of this sound familiar?

I believe they came throuth Canada.

I am looking to clarify my information and even more to trace John and Jane in Scotland. I would appreciate any information anyone could give me.

Some things I've found:
History 1 ( http://www.clanhunter.org.uk/page2.html ):
- Unnecessary break after initial "Clan Hunter". If you wish to leave the Clan Hunter, it should be used as a subject heading, and the following paragraph should also start with "Clan Hunter"
- Blue, underlined text that appears to have been a link on a previous page (copied, then pasted)

This page, as well as some others, could benefit from some basic HTML formatting. I have attached a formatted version of the main portion of the first history page (I took the same text, and just changed the tags around, to use a more standard web format - the only context change was that the above mention of separating the header from the paragraph at the top of the page)

Hunters in Maine and New Brunswick

Looking for any information on Hunters in Maine. I have found my GGF Michael Hunter b.1839 in New Brunswick and I find that his wife Sarah Goulden was from Johnville, Carlton County, New Brunswick. Michaels father was born in Ireland around 1795, his name was Robert Hunter. Michael and Sarah moved to Freeport Maine (Cumberland County) All this information is IAW census records.

Hello, Hunters! I've been away for a long time, but now I'm ba-a-ack!

{Hi, Boo! Ye could call one in a while. Sniff...sniff...
Hugs'n'kisses to Daddy Luke and Mama Rose fer me..mite make it back to NC next summer--ye gonna be there this time?  Better yet--ye goin' tae the Gathering?  Gonna try my bestest tae be there this time...}

Back to my original thought...

I've traced my family back to Edward Hunter of Inverkip, b. 1696. I've looked in OPR's, IGI, everywhere and anywhere trying to turn up more information on this man. I can't seem to find anything. [sigh]

Well, actually, that's not quite right. I've since learned that the Hunter's may have been living/renting/crofting on land belonging to Sir Michael Stewart of Blackhall. (Brian--I'm hoping I have that right.)

Edward married about 1720/21 Elizabeth Kerr, b. 1700, daughter of John Kerr. They had six children, their fourth child being my emigrant ancestor, also named Edward Hunter {b. 15 Oct. 1731. chr. 17 Oct. 1731, d. Jan. 1801 Huntingdon Co., PA}.

I believe [not yet confirmed] that Malcom Hunter/Anna Creswell(Criswell) were the parents of Edward the Elder Hunter (my designation to tell the father and son apart). Both Malcom and Anna names seem to run in the family, along with William, John and Robert.

Anyone with further information on these people mentioned, please get in touch with me. My e-mail addy is madehlinne@yahoo.com.

Thanks!

Madehlinne

Shapley--

Am I right in assuming you're a descendant of Joseph Hunter and Margaret Watt? They formerly lived in Pennsylvania before the Revolutionary War and at one point lived in Cumberland Co., where Joseph owned a tavern. He eventually sold it and I had previously thought they had migrated into Kentucky, where more than one member of the family was killed by Indians (in separate attacks). Later, some family members moved to Missouri.

Are you related to Stephen Ben Hunter? :)

This is not, BTW, my Hunter family, but information I have stumbled across in my years of researching Hunter's.

Yours aye,
Madehlinne,
Mary Hunter Linneman

P.
It might be a stretch, but have you considered looking for Sherrod in Indiana?

I seem to recall somewhere in my research of a Sherrod Hunter around 1850 in Indiana. He was not a member of my family, but that was an unusual name and it stuck with me.

Hope this helps.

Madehlinne

Dear Mary,

Sorry for taking so long to respond.

According my information, I am descended from Joseph Hunter, originally of Ireland, who married Mary Ann Holmes in Ireland. They did emigrate to Carlyle, Pennsylvania. He worked for a short while in Kaskaskia, Illinois, and later settled near Louisville, Kentucky. He died and was buried in Louisville in 1791 or 1792.

Joseph Hunter I had a son, Joseph Hunter, Jr. born in Carlyle, Pennsylvania. He also had other sons and daughters, but it is from Joseph Jr. that the Hunters of New Madrid are descended. He married Catherine Phillips in Louisville, Kentucky in 1793. Both are buried in Sikeston, Missouri.

Hi Tenncelt !

Welcome to the Clan Hunter message board.

Although I am not descended from your Hunter ancestral line I have followed the discussions on this board, with great interest, because of the distinctive name Eliphalet Hunter. It is such a memorable name that I feel sure that someone will recognise the name in their pedigree and get in touch with you. I have great faith in the knowledge and wisdom of the people who read these postings.

In my experience, the biblical first names, Elijah and Israel, do not sound to be either Scottish, Irish or English in origin. I wonder if this is a useful research clue? If I may hazard a guess - I would say that your Hunter ancestors may, originally have been, Jaegers (or Yaegers) possibly from, a religeous sect, fleeing persicution, in Switzerland, Austria, or Southern Germany, and the name became 'Hunter' when the family took the oath of Allegiance as Naturalised Citizens of the USA'. But I would suggest that this is only a personal suggestion. I do not have any evidence to support the idea. On the other hand 'Thomas' is a common name in England, and I have several Thomas's (and even female Thomasin's in my English Hunter pedigree. It is much rarer in Scotland and Ireland.

I would be very interested to hear if anyone responds, to your query and to learn how your research progresses.

Good luck!

Brian Hunter

Henrietta Hunter, born circa 1710 died 1757.
3. Charlotte Hunter born circa 1711.
4. Its my quest for 2007.

I have set out some info below, working back from my Grandfather , with bros./sisters in brackets..is there an easier place to do this on line?

David Hunter (born 1886, Easter Glentore) (his brothers were Peter 1890 Easter G'tore & William Milligan Hunter 1887 ditto, his sister was Agnes 1884).

^

William Hunter (1857, Stanrigg) married Jane Milligan (His brother's were Peter born 1855, Stanrigg & David 1859, Stanrigg his sisters were Christina, Janet, Ann, Mary)
(I know David married Mary Turnbull in 1889 and had at least 1 son)

^

David Hunter (born 1826 Tillicoultry) Married Ann Russell (His two Brothers were William born 1829, Rawyards & Thomas born 1837, Rawyards)

^

William Hunter (??) married to Agnes Cample/Campbell not much on them at all but clearly they moved from Tillicoultry to Airdrie between 1826 and 1828.

To a man, they were Miners...my own father (yes another David) had his own stint in the pits during the war poor guy and I was the first since about the 1820's to not have mining as the only thing I could do.

Hope that this chimes with someone out there.

Davie.
Sir, you have made my day - looks like 3 yrs after you posted it on this site. I'm hoping that you haven't given up on a connection. I sent you an email to the address listed with your post, but am also giving word here hoping greatly for a connection. William Wesley Hunter is my Great Grandfather via his son - Martin Franklin Hunter, and his son (my Dad) - Emory Hunter, who was named after William Emory, and who named me after William's brother, Steve who died on horseback as a Ranch Foreman on the JA Ranch in Donley/Armstrong county. This would be a great thing for me, to talk to or meet my kin I've never met in 52 years. My email address is 5iron1
@suddenlink.net.

Thanks Brian. I guess we could call it a stroke of luck in my finding a link to my long lost family as I'm new to Ancestry.com and am not real familar with brousing within it. Tell me, I do realize he left this post in 2004, and I know there's a very good chance he might have given up with no reply for that long, but I'm hoping there's another part of the site that he has started & is monitoring. I'm searching the best I can using the family names, but in such a massive site with so many same names matching different family lines, what method would a experienced guy as yourself use to carry on from where I'm at? I'd appreciate it. Thanks...
