The first name "eliphalet" has been in my mother's side of the family for at least 6 generations. Our first records show Eliphalet Hunter as a young man in Loudon County, Virgina around 1775-1792?, with a male relative named Thomas and his mother's name was Mrs. Issiah Hunter. Eliphalet Hunter turns up in Nelson County, Ky around 1800 and continues thru the present day with our Hunter part of the family still in Central Ky. today. In the late 1850's a Sanford Hunter moved from Central Ky. to Owensboro, Ky. where his desendants still live today. If anyone has any information on any of these areas or people please contact me at <indypeople_99@yahoo.com>
Thanks Kevin Keith

Kevin:

I have searched for the name Elipalet Hunter without any success.

However you may be interested of a reference to Elphahet Hunter of Loudon Co VA, in a posting on the Rootsweb Hunter-L surname list, - Subject Hunter family, dated 8 April 2006. I have emailed the author advising them of your posting to the Clan-Hunter Message Board, dated 24 Dec 2001.

Hi Brian. I saw your posting, and looked up "Eliphalet Hunter" on Google. I found a few references:

I am not related, but I was intrigued by the name "Eliphalet." It's very unusual.

Well done Mary:

Our original poster must be delighted with your discovery

I too was intrigued by the name Eliphalet, it seems so unusual. I have never seen it used anywhere else.
Although the documents use the surname 'Hunter. I suspect that the name may have been anglicised from Jaeger or Yeager.

I tried my own Hunter database and the usual family history resources on the internet withou success. I never thought to try 'Google'.

The documents which you found were in themselves quite fascinating, and give you a glimpse what life was like, in those times.

It was difficult to find the entry amongst the plethora of names in the second document. So I copied the whole document into my word proccessor and used the search facility. Hey presto - there it was. Isn't technology wonderful!

I hope that you are enjoying using the message board.

Brian

I have information about Eliphalet Hunter. My ancestor Elijah appears to be a brother of Eliphalet as well as a brother Thomas. Please contact me. I think we have a common ancestor, and I would love to exchange information. Their father Israel appears in the early Tithables and tax records of Loudoun Co., VA. I have looked at all of these records which are located at the Virginia Archives in Richmond.

Hi Tenncelt !

Welcome to the Clan Hunter message board.

Although I am not descended from your Hunter ancestral line I have followed the discussions on this board, with great interest, because of the distinctive name Eliphalet Hunter. It is such a memorable name that I feel sure that someone will recognise the name in their pedigree and get in touch with you. I have great faith in the knowledge and wisdom of the people who read these postings.

In my experience, the biblical first names, Elijah and Israel, do not sound to be either Scottish, Irish or English in origin. I wonder if this is a useful research clue? If I may hazard a guess - I would say that your Hunter ancestors may, originally have been, Jaegers (or Yaegers) possibly from, a religeous sect, fleeing persicution, in Switzerland, Austria, or Southern Germany, and the name became 'Hunter' when the family took the oath of Allegiance as Naturalised Citizens of the USA'. But I would suggest that this is only a personal suggestion. I do not have any evidence to support the idea. On the other hand 'Thomas' is a common name in England, and I have several Thomas's (and even female Thomasin's in my English Hunter pedigree. It is much rarer in Scotland and Ireland.

I would be very interested to hear if anyone responds, to your query and to learn how your research progresses.

Good luck!

Brian Hunter
