Clarks/Keatts/Wooding of Pittsylvania County, VA

Hi all,

I'm looking for feedback on a sheet of paper about Robert Clark (b 1825) and wife Edna/Edney (b1828) - both slaves and their master, Nathaniel Woodings. The sheet reads, "Robert Clark's father was Major Clark, husband of Nathaniel Woodings daughter (not named). Robert was given to them as a wedding gift."

This was something that I clipped from the internet, but apparently lost the source file. Does anyone have any further information on this branch?

Note: I know those names are fairly common, so to clarify the line, this Robert Clark is the father of William Henry Clark (b1847) who married Celestia Keatts (b.1868), daughter of Stith and Isabella Keatts. Thank you so much~!

There's also the Virginia Slave Birth's Index 1853 - 1865. It should be available from your library and will note the name of the slave born, the mother, date, owner and county. You may be able to track Sarah down she had any children during those years.

Thank you, Carol. I had already found this Armstead. He is my paternal gg-grdpa. My problem is that he had a son (JR.) by his name, a grandson by another son named Beverly, and to boot, there is my mystery man by that name. My mystery man Armstead/Armistead fathered my paternal grandpa Stanhope. He's been reported, by family stories, to have been a white businessman of South Boston, VA. I've found several possibilities for him, but no definite match. Thank you, for you interest. I know that many African/Black, Chandlers came from Lucy Lacy's line (she was a sister to my paternal g-grdma Bettie.
Thanks, again.
James Lacy

PS. I should add that family stories have tripped up many a researcher while they are usually true or partly true, but become very garbled with information about one person attributed to another. So take the family story with a grain of salt. We have had several people in our group stuck for years because of this. It is especially true when you have more than one family member with the same name. Also, censuses have mistakes, too, so you just have to sort out the information.

Good luck!

Carol

I was researching a southern Chandler (not my Chandler family, mine are from New England) when I came across a Stanhope Lacy who may be yours in www.familysearch.org. Thus, the first on the list is male, the second is female, and so on. The final nine names are all females. I have placed a dash in between each entry. I assume that the names in parentheses are the masters. A few are identified as free. Some have no masters name listed, but are not identified as free- I do not know what this means.
I do not know who completed the transcription from the original record.
The book also includes an 1858 list of 55 white members, and various other information on the history of the church. The church is still there (near Concord) but has a different name.

Sorry I'm late (as usual)... Anywhoo... There were 2 of my extended Nelson County, VA kinfolk from this area of Lovingston, Massies Mill, and Amherst.

The first one was born Nov. 1850. He was a slave/farm laborer of James Taliaferro, and worked on the plantation in Peddler, Amherst, VA. - The wife of James Taliaferro was Balinda Smith (1800 - 1883).

This George Sandidge married Bettie (last name, or surname Unknown). Their chillins were: Ollie, Scott, Pearl, Marshall, Kallie, and Lottie. This George Sandidge, died in 1919.
-------------------------
The second George Sandidge, also from Amherst, (Temperance, Amherst, to be more precise) was born in 1865, and died in 1880. He was the son of Roderick (also a slave of Balinda Smith - Taliaferro), and Emily.

This George Sandidge had a brother named Boyd Sandidge who married Virgie Taylor. - Roderick, and Emily had 13 chillins.

(see: www.cousinsandkinfolkofnelsoncountyvirginia.com) for more info.

Hello. Chances are, we are related if you are related to the Pannells that ended up in WV. The earliest Pannill that I have in my database is Lewis Pannill, Sr. He was born in Pittsylvania County, VA. I am unsure about the year but I think that it was around 1857. He was married to Eliza Ann Robertson. They had three children; Lewis, Amelia, and Louisa. Let me know if any of this sounds familiar.
April

gawaineh, My great grandmother was Jayne Hughes - B. @1850 - (believed to be from Wilkinson County, GA) who was married to Fed Hall (my great grandfather). She died sometime before 1910. I have been unable to find any connection she may have had with the Hughes(Hughs) of Wilkinson County. Fed Hall's stepfather was Edmund Hasting (b 1820) and his mother was Jennie Hasting (b 1830). They both lived in Wilkinson County, GA at least until 1910. Might you have any information on the Hughes of Wilkinson County that you are willing to share?

I FOUND MY GREAT, GREAT GRAND FATHER, CALIFORNIA HUGHES ON THE 1880 CENSUS. IT SHOWED THAT HE WAS 74 YEARS OLD AT THE TIME. IT ALSO SHOWED THAT HE WAS BORN IN VIRGINIA,APPROXIMATLELY 1806. HE WAS ON THE 1880 CENSUS OF WILKINSON COUNTY GEORGIA. HE WAS MARRIED AND STARTED A VERY YOUNG FAMILT INCLUDING A WIFE. ANY INFORMATION YOU FOUND WOULD BE GRATLY APPRECIATED. PLEASE BE ADVISED THAT DURING THAT TIME PERIOD THEY WERE SPELLING THE NAMES HUGHES AS HUGHS. LOTS OF HUGHES IN GEORGIA

Thank you! Elsie Roach, wife of Thomas Campbell is my aunt and 1st daughter of Thomas R Roach Sr and Elsie Ann Dews. Elsie Roach passed 6 Mar 2012.

I've found much of the info about Elsie Ann "Dews", my maternal great grandmother from Halifax county VA. My next step is to find the names of the 6 children that didn't survive between 1900 and 1908. Willie Dews born 1891, son of Elsie and a relationship with a Jim or James MNU, but is listed as living in her parents household in the 1900 census with her 1st husband, named Richard White. She married my great grand father in 1902. Her known surviving children with Thomas R Roach Sr are Mary born about 1908-09 and my maternal grandfather born 1905, Thomas R Roach Jr. All of Elsie Ann and Thomas Roach Sr's children were buried at The Mount Pleasant Bapt Church cemetery. With the exception of Thomas Roach Jr, none of his siblings nor his parents have gravestones.

Tyronne

Don't forget to check out the Indexing project by the Virginia Historial Society. They have a website called Unknown No Longer,
http://unknownnolonger.vahistorical.org/

It's essentially a database of names, plantations, runaway ads, bills of sale, manumission papers, passes - ANYTHING that lists the name of a slave. It's amazing resource. You can search by first name, owner's name, age, county, etc. Check it out and good luck!

Hickman, Edmonds Edmunds of Powhatan VA

Hi,
I am researching William Hickman, barber, free black from Richmond VA, where he appeared on the 1820 and 1830 census of Monro Ward. He was born circa 1795 in VA. He married Elizabeth Dunlop of Richmond VA, also of a free family. In 1832, William Hickman moved to Toronto, Upper Canada (now Ontario) with his family. In addition to the many young children that died, he had sons William Hickman Jr, Henry Hickman and one daughter Chloe Ann.

William Hickman died in 1863 in Toronto, and in his will, he leaves his estate to his HALF-BROTHER Thomas Edmunds, of City of Toronto. Now the interesting thing is that Thomas Edmonds of Toronto, blacksmith, was living in Powhatan County VA on the 1850 census, age 30 with Tapley and Judith Edmonds.

Sometimes between 1850 and 1863, Tapley and Judith Edmonds (or Edmunds) moved to Toronto, where they both died and are buried.

Given the location Powhatan and the daughter named Chloe, I am guessing that William Hickman of Toronto is somehow linked to Chloe Hickman, born circa 1750 of Powhatan, mother of Elizabeth Hickman.

Any idea, how I can find more information to prove this relationship? Also, any idea of the connection between Tapley Edmonds, blacksmith and Chloe Hickman?

My cousin and I have been on the hunt for a connection for the Gorrells of Danville,VA. The father, John Gorrell was born in Winston, NC, in 1862, and thereafter met Bettie Roane from Caswell County, and travelled on to Danville where their first son, John Jr., was born. After that Alonza, James, and a sister,Eunice, was born. The family all lived on Main St in Danville, and John Jr., remained an Insurance Salesman who always walked from door to door. We're seeking any connection, but mainly any family photos.

African American Rollins family from Orange Co., VA to Giles Co., TN

I'm going to transcribe here a passage from the "Flournoy Rivers Transcripts" in which Flournoy Rivers transcribed in the late 1890s court records from Giles County, TN. There is some very valuable genealogical information here on this Rollins family of color.

******

Saturday Nov. 24, 1827

RECORDS OF FREEDOM

Several certificates of freedom of the children of Caty Rollins of whose own freedom I made a note in 1818.

"On motion of John Mandelbert Rollins, son of the late John Rollins, dec'd, and Caty Rollins, a free person of colour, aged twenty one years the 20th of this month, of a dark complexion though not black. Five feet eleven and half inches high, with bushy hair, the left eye a little cross. It was ordered to be certified that he was born free, " page31."

A like entry follows about Jane Francis Jones, formerly Rollins, 18 years old June 30, 1827, five feet, four inches high, dark complexion, not black, bushy hair, knot on each little finger on the outside, scar on the breast.

Then on motion of Caty Rollins, a mulatto woman aged about forty-one years with a small scare on the upper part of the left cheek, five feet, one and a half inches high, whose freedom was certified by the clerk of Orange County, Virginia, April 4, 1817 and recorded here at the February term 1818. It is ordered that her minor children were born free: Daniel, born July 8, 1811; Charles, Oct. 17, 1813; Reuben Sept. 10, 1815: William Johnson, May 14, 1817; Betsey Ann, Feb. 7, 1819; Sally Ann, Oct. 7, 1820; Andrew Jackson, May 31, 1822; George Washington, Oct. 13, 1823.

This seems to have been a piece of forethought on the mother's part who like St. Paul, was either "born free," or like the Roman captain had obtained it with "great sum."
Re: Lucinda Johnson (Roane?)

Courtesy lookup - not my family.

I have done a lot of ROANE research for a good friend, and I had some information for you concerning Lucinda JOHNSON, daughter of Armistead and Sarah (b. April 1820- died after 1900).

Lucindarella (name on her marriage certificate) JOHNSON was born 1846/January 1848 in Westmoreland County. She married 16 Dec 1869 in Westmoreland Richard R. ROANE, born July 1847, Westmoreland, the son of Thomas ROANE and Betsy TRAVIS or TRAVERS. They had at least 11 children, eight still alive in 1900, so there should be many, many descendants. They include:
1)Sarah E. ROANE, b. 1871, died 9 Nov 1896, Cople Parish, West'land

2) William Thomas ROANE, b. April 1875, married 2 Jan 1902 Rose Emma SMITH

3) Bessie or Betsy ROANE, b. May 1877, married 1898 George THOMPSON

4 & 5) twins, Jim & John ROANE, b. April 1878

6) Richard, Jr. (or Leo?) ROANE, b. May 1880

7) female child, b. 1882, died 5 March 1882,Cople parish, West'land

8) Mary ROANE, b. April 1885

9) Martha or Mamie J. ROANE, b. abt. 1888, married 30 Mar 1913 Ebert William SMITH, son of Ludwell & Roxie SMITH

10) Rosa or Rosie ROANE, b. April 1891

Hope this helps in your research?
Laura
Re: Freed Slaves of William Harry & Robert Ross of Brooke Co., VA (now Brooke Co., WV).

Drusilla's will dated 16 April 1816 takes up where her father's left off giving to her father's negro boys, William, Harry and Robert Ross $50 at the time of their freedom according to Thomas Edgington's will. At that time they belonged to John Edgington who dies in 1820. The 1850 Slave Schedule of Brooke Co., VA does not have any slave owners by the name of Edgington.

Drucilla’s married sister, Mary “Molly” Veirs mentioned in the her will lived a short distance across the Ohio River into the FREE state of Ohio. In the 1820 Census of Steubenville, her household listed under her husband, Nehemiah Veirs, a tanner has 5 Free Colored, ages 26/45, a possible destination for William, Harry & Robert.

This additional and particular bit of information has been disturbing for me for years and I will post it now:

In Thomas Edgington’s Estate Inventory of the September Term 1814, it list a Negro Boy named James, “a slave for life”.

Having watched the latest “Who Do You Think You Are” featuring Blair Underwood and how families took care of their own, this must be the reason for James’ status while living in the state of Virginia. James most likely is a blood relative of the Edgingtons. This same Inventory contains other slaves; old negro woman named Jenny, negro woman named Milly, negro man named William, negro boy named Robert. William and Robert to serve till 28 years of age when it was legal to be freed in the state of Virginia.
