Re: Monroe Hayes Sellers 1870

Thank you so very much for the "pointers" and for responding so quickly. In 1880, actually 1879 the Sellers and Vick families had left TN. for KS., so I am not sure that I can make a note of the neighbors, that is a super idea. However, I will look in the TN. 1867 Voter Registration Rolls and see if I can locate either Wilson Sellers or Monroe. The county/district, I started that a while back was marking off the districts as I went along
laid the paper down and do not know where I placed it so I
would need to start over again. At one point I thought that I might be able to locate Monroe and Amanda in Dist. 13 Dekalb near his parents, then I thought well maybe he is living near his sister Lavina and her husband Horace Vick in Dist. 2, however I will need to recheck that one today. I also thought that maybe they may have been living with other relatives. You are correct, time consuming to say the least, I will keep searching in hopes of finding him. Thanks again Pat

It is not unusual for people to be "missed" on a census record only to be enumerated on the following decade. Happened more times than I can count. One of my "tricks" involved making a note of neighbors then search for those neighbors on records where the "object" peron was missing. Another "trick" is a time-consuming scan of every name in the county/precinct/district where they may have lived. Also review 1867 Voter Registration Rolls.

I have been searching for my gg grandfather in 1870 for 14 years, to no avail. Monroe H. Sellers TN. May 2, 1845 or about. Married to Amanda Hayes Sellers according to the DeKalb Co. TN. records 1868. His parents were Wilson and Mary Sellers in the 1870 living in Liberty DeKalb Co.. Would there be any other place or records that I might search that would help me locate Monroe in 1870? He filed for a war pension in July 1897 but was denied, he stated that he returned to Murfreesbor. In 1880 (KS.) 1890(OK.)died in 1939 in Oklahoma. Any help provided will be greatly appreciated. Thank Pat heaven12122003@yahoo.com

Continue your search unless you are provided documented proof! Per https://familysearch.org/ Robert Daniels wed Jane "Green", 28 Nov 1889 in Williamson County. That's supported by death certificate for Isabelle Johnson viewable/printable on the same website. The 1889-date indicated on 1910 census where the couple enumerated as married for 21 years. While on familysearch, lookup death certificate for Susie Daniels (3 Jul 1903 - 22 Oct 1918). I'm not related!

You might owe me "big time" for this?(lol) Find a map of Mississippi Counties at mississippi.hometownlocator.com. Near the Tennessee border are adjoining counties of Alcorn and Prentiss. Julia Boone wed Joseph Bryant, 18 Jul 1876 in Prentiss. They're found 1880 Prentiss-Not Stated-169-Image 13 with Dean(2) and Victoria(1). None of Mississippi's 1890 census was saved from congressional-ordered destruction. Next 1900 Alcorn-Deat 4-District 0002-Image 2 where Julia(37) was head-of-household. She had given birth to 10 and nine were still living. General was amond the eldest and absent from the household. Between 1900 and 1910, Julia married unknown Stafford. She's found with that surname: 1910 TN-Shelby-Memphis Ward 18-0230-Image 5. The three youngest children from 1900 also part of that household. In 1920, she's found married to Tom Ellis thus the WWI Draft Card connection to General James Bryant.

He was born 7 Jun 1882, worked in Texarkana, AR, and listed his mom: Julia Ellis of Memphis, TN as next-of-kin. His lifespan corresponds to the SSDI record you've saved.

Courtesy lookup - not my family.

I found some information that may help pin down the "right" African American STOKLEY family in Lauderdale County, TN.

First, David or Davis Stokly, married to Lula, on the 1930 census, was not David on previous censuses - his real name was Harvey Stokly. He was born 18 March 1878, possibly the son of ?? Henry Stokley, born 1850 and Kittie, born 1858.

Two other men contemporary in age, so may be possible brothers are:
Isreal L. Stokley, born 15 Sept 1876, married to Lucy.
John Levi Stokley. born 19 Jan 1881, married to Abbie, died 15 Aug 1968.

Harvey Stokely married 25 December 1901 Lauderdale Co., TN, Lula Halliburton. She was born about 1883, the daughter of Henry Halliburton and Nealie Jones. Lula died at age 49 yrs. 5 Jan 1933 in Curve, TN, of pneumonia, and was buried at Mt. Pleasant Cemetery, Ripley, Lauderdale, TN.

Harvey and Lula had the following children:
Thomas 1905
Rufus 1913
Pearly 1914
Harvey W. 1917
Mariah 1920
Frankie (female) 1923

Harvey married for the second time between 1933-40 a woman named Mamie, born about 1885. Both were alive through the 1940 census, and shared their home with his yougest child, 16 year old Frankie.

Hope this helps!
Laura

Just to clarify, other than trying to locate Innis, what are you trying to find out? What is your father's name and were his parents Elizabeth/Lizabeth Dismukes and Paul Hendrix? Sorry for the confusion.

Emerson Watson was the son of George and Rose. His brothers were Richard and George, Jr. Emerson was the only one I was able to trace. I have a feeling his brothers may have died during the smallpox epidemic in Arkansas.

Denise

Hi. I checked from 1870-1940 and the only person I was able to trace from 1880 was Emerson Watson. I tried all variations of the name Innis Hendricks and the only person who came close was an Innis Hendricks in St. Thomas, Virgin Islands. He was born in 1878, but the records claim he was born there, not Arkansas. I was unable to find the Watson family on the 1870. Based on the place of birth for the oldest son, I starting checking in Tennessee, but I couldn't find him or the rest of the family in Tennessee or Arkansas. In my research I've not been able to find many former slave families on the 1870 because many freed slaves were afraid to participate in the census for fear of being reenslaved. I am so sorry, but I will definitely let you know if I find him. Take care, Denise
