Coleman Duncan Jr. held 7 slaves in Nelson County: Bemiss, Charles, Green, Harriet, Lucy, Nancy, and Rachel. It had been 8, but Rachel's young (un-named) child died at age 7 days in late 1856. So far I have been able to identify 144 slaves that were held by the Duncan family, mostly in Nelson County and some in Hardin County. KY. Earliest mention so far is in the 1820s. Most of the owners are closely related.

I am looking for a wealthy man who was court ordered to leave Kentucky in 1847. He was ordered to head west until told to stop. He left with 16 covered wagons 1 trail boss and 4 armored guards with his amily and personal belongings. His initials are C.R. He settled in eastern Oklahoma. Indian territories and went through the territory process. Also might have helped find places for slaves to stay no by " carpenter" to the slaves..
Arnold,

When I read your last reply, I remembered that I also have Jennie and Fred Claxton's death certificate (Ft. Wayne, Ind.). Fred was Jennie's informant and he listed Adam Gatliff as Jennie's father. (They named there only son Adam Claxton) He did not know her mothers name. Mariah's husband was Adam and he is listed on the U. S. Federal Census Mortality Schedules, 1850-1885 and black and a free man. Birth year as abt 1820, brn in Kentucky. Census location as Rockcastle, Kentucky. It does not have the maiden name is Mariah. (HOPE THIS IS NOT CONFUSING).

Ansel

Helping friend research her family line which we have traced to, we believe, the Coleman Duncan family in Nelson County, Kentucky. Her great great grandfather James Duncan appears to have been born around 1865 on the plantation of Coleman Duncan. This James Duncan then sharecropped on that farm and ultimately purchased part of the land for his own.
I am new to searching for African American genealogy and unsure how to proceed finding names of slaves or slave cemetaries in that area. Can someone assist?

There is a slave cemetery inside the old Three Rivers Rock Quarry which is now owned and operated by LaFarge Aggregates. It is on the faultline and so far as I know it has grave stones with information on them. I haven't been able to see it yet, as I asked for permission to go to the graves to take photos for Find-A-Grave and have not heard back from them as of yet. I believe there is eight graves there. Someone told me that they are getting permission to move the cemetery. Don't know if that is true or not.

Hold on. I just noticed in my files a Jimmy in the household of Mariah in Rockcastle County, Ky and when I rechecked the census for 1870 it is definitely Jinny, female, aged 16. Unfortunately, I cannot identify Mariah as a descendent of Rose, although the reason all the black Gatliffs were in Rockcastle County was because Rose and her family moved there during the trials.

HI:
Slave schedules list slave owners and their slaves by age, gender and color (black and mulatto). If you know the slave owner's name, look for him on the slave schedule in 1860 and 1850. Match the owner with the approximate age and gender of your enslaved relative. I read that this is a way to find the slave owner but it hasn't worked well for me -- but you could narrow down the slaves by age to the slave owner that way.
Another method of researching slaves is to study the 1870 Census in the county where your relatives were enslaved and look for whites who have personal property and real estate. It's most likely that they were former slave owners. Also look for African Americans who lived near them, because they could be their former slaves.
Tax lists are generally not online but you can order microfilm from an Latter-day Saints Family History Center in your area. Check the LDS' website, familysearch.org to find out where the nearest Family History Center is. Also check the Locality to see what records you can order. Check the state library website or local library in those counties to see what records they have stored before you do a research trip to the area.
Do some research in those two counties to find out how slave sales were conducted. You do have the land sale record for your relative already, right? That probably has given you a lot of info.
Also if your ancestor was freed, (sorry if I'm repeating myself) it's done through either a will or a deed of emancipation, which would be a county record.
Hope this helps.
Kberry

Thanks for the suggestions.
I have looked at slave schedules but slaves are not listed by name.
I have not checked tax lists but have checked wills from 1820-1865 (end of War) for Dodsons. I hoped to find one for RG Foster, husband of Bettie Dodson, but no luck.
Are tax lists on-line?
Janice

HI:
Maybe you could try and trace your family by using the Slave Schedule/Censuses for 1860 and 1850 and try to see if they were owned by Dodsons and Fosters then.

Also check tax lists -- they listed slaves by age and gender. And deeds, starting with 1865 and working backward year by year, looking for those slave names. Maybe your great-grandmother was freed by them, and there may be a deed of emancipation for her or her family.
kdberr1

I have recently found that g-grandmother Charlotte Dodson Beam (african american) was sold land after Civil War by Bettie Dodson Foster Williams (white). The land was next to Bettie and her mother Savilla Dodson. An adjoining piece of land was sold by Bettie to Ludwell Beam, Charlotte's son (also african american).
Another son Hines Beam (african american) also used the name Hines Foster when signing up for Civil War. His military record and pension uses both names.
I have looked for wills for Dodson and Foster that might indicate these slave names but have not found any.
Anyone have information or suggestions?

Re: Samuels/Wiseheart Slaves in Nelson County

Hi,

I'm doing research on the area of Samuels (north of Bardstown) in Nelson County, KY. Specifically I'm currently targeting the abandoned Stoner's Chapel Cemetery.

Wilson (and reportedly also Martha) Samuels is buried in this cemetery. The Martha I have listed for the cemetery is Martha M. Stoner Samuels (b. 1822, d. 1903), though I have not yet located her headstone to confirm. Another person said to be buried there whose headstone I have not yet located is Mary R Barclay Samuels (b. 1844, d. 1923). I mention her because you asked in another post about a Mary that was possibly surnamed Barger, and I wondered if it could be Barclay instead? Or, it's possible the Mary buried in the cemetery had the surname Barger and it was misrecollected as Barclay at the time it was recorded.

There is also a John Wiseheart buried in the cemetery, but he died in 1816, and so was more likely the father or grandfather of the John Wiseheart you mention in your first post. Ann C Wiseheart is also buried in the same cemetery.

More interestingly... Wilson had a daughter, Mary Rachel Samuels, who was born Sept. 23, 1848 and died Sept. 20, 1944, who is also buried in this cemetery. She married Thomas Edward "Bud" Pence (also buried in the same cemetery). Rachel is an unusual-enough name that either your previously referenced Rachel and Mary are related (perhaps Rachel was a sister of Mary's mother, Martha?), or perhaps it is possible that your Mary and Rachel are the same person?

Noteworthy is that Bud Pence was one of Frank and Jesse James' best friends (and so was his brother, Donnie Pence). Besides being childhood neighbors, all 4 men were members of Quantrill's Raiders. Bud Pence and Frank James were among those who surrendered to Union troops in Samuels Depot (Nelson County) on July 26, 1865. Donnie Pence would later go on to be Sheriff of Nelson County for almost 30 years. Frank James attended Donnie's funeral in spring of 1896. Bud and Frank were also the prime suspects in the Liberty, MO bank robbery of Feb. 13, 1866.

Wilson Samuels' home was a known refuge for Frank and Jesse James throughout his lifetime.

On rainy days I sometimes explore the old records of Nelson County. If you would like me to look anything up the next time I go (I know you mentioned will book information), then I'd be happy to. I'll see if I can find Rachel Samuels next time I'm there, and I can look for info on anyone else, also.

I'm not sure of the exact scope or direction of his research, but I know Bardstown Historian Penn Bogert is actively researching Nelson County slaves. He may recently have uncovered more information that would be relevant to your search.

Let me know if I can help with anything!! Good luck!

HI:
I have several suggestions if you haven't done this already:
Find a marriage record for your great-grandmother. This may also give her parents' names.
Find her family in the U.S. Census, starting with your known relatives -- your grandfather, great-grandparents, etc. starting with the 1930 Census.
Looking for my great-grandmother, Elsie Simpson, born 1862.
Death certificate states her father was:"unknown Simpson, born in Scotland". Her mother: unknown, born in USA"
I have photos, she is either white/American Indian or white/Black. My grandmother grew up in Nicholasville, KY, her father was Luther B Dickerson, the Dickerson house still stands, with "slave quarters under the house". I have been trying to figure out the relationship between Elsie and Luther, more importantly Elsie's family history.Any ideas on where to look greatly appreciated.

Re: Slave Rose Gatliff sued for freedom

Unfortunately, the previous link no longer functions.

From the author Arnold Taylor, a description of the book

The first book was Rose, a Woman of Colour. A Slave's Struggle for Freedom in the Courts of Kentucky. ($13.95, pp.130), Rose, later Rose Gatliff, filed suit for her family's freedom in Whitley County, Kentucky in 1833; after four trials and one appeal, she was finally successful in 1852. One witness testified that she was "the best lawyer the Negroes had."

After the family was declared free, they remained in Rockcastle County, Kentucky for a time. Rose died before the 1860 Census, and by 1880 many of the family were living in Chillicothe, Ohio, and by 1900 several were in Cincinnati, working in the railroad industry. Even today, descendents of Rose live in the Columbus, Chillicothe and Dayton, Ohio areas.

Rose's suit was partly based on the fact that she was very white, which could be reason enough for a judge or jury to declare a plaintiff free, but also on her claim that she was born in Virginia as the child of an Indian woman. Since native americans could not be enslaved in Virginia, except for a brief period of time in the late seventeenth century, a child of an Indian was free-born.

Some readers of Rose expressed surprise that slaves had any rights, much less the right to go to court and sue for their freedom. Since Rose's claim was based on two limited grounds, I decided to resume research at the Archives, to locate examples of other principles on which a slave could claim his freedom in the courts of Kentucky. My second book, Suing For Freedom in Kentucky ($15.95, pp.283), was the result.

Suing For Freedom is available through booklocker.com and both books may be purchased through amazon.com.

Both books contain valuable resources for genealogists, with particular potential for African American genealogy. It is not always possible to identify specific former slaves, as their first names were so often similar, but as with Rose, whose family took the name of Gatliff, freed slaves often took their former masters' surnames as their own.

LINKS TO OTHER SOURCES FOR AFRICAN AMERICAN GENEALOGY

www.freedomcenter.org

www.afrigeneas.com/

www.cyndislist.com/african.htm

ccharity.com/

www.caagri.org/

ROSE NAMES
A
Alice Dana Adams, Sylvester Adams,Cassandra Gill Aldridge, James Alexander,Rebecca Anderson, Davis Arvine, Astin

B
Elijah Bailey, Nicholas Ballard, Franklin Ballinger, William Barker, Amos Bennett, Adelaide Berry (see Duncan), John Berry, Betsy, Bird, Cyrene Gatliff Bishop,Thomas Bishop, Greenup Blanton, William Blount, Richard Boatman,Bob, William Bowen, Joseph Brandenburgh,Benjamin Bratcher, Luther Brawner, John L Bridges, John C.Brown, William Bryant, John Buford, Thomas Buford, Polly Bunch, Solomon Bunch, Joseph Burkhardt, John Byrns, Joseph Byrns, John B.
My name is Ansel Allen and my great grandmother Jennie Gatliff was born in Ky about 1855. She was married to Frederick Claxton, born in Va. about 1850. Would she be related to Rose Gatliff.

My name is Ansel Allen and my great grandmother is Jennie Gatliff, born abt 1855 in Ky. She was married to Frederick Claxton, born abt 1850 from Va. I have tried to look up the Gatliff family and it seems that surname is blocked. I understand there was a Gatliff that sued for her freedom and won.

smart girl Esther. turns out often blacks were the owners. they bought they own families to be sure no one else owned them. Every name on that original list of slave owners is in my tree.
