Hi Jerome,

Charles served in Company A 24th Regiment USCT. His Pension Application card is on Ancestry and also shows that his wife applied for a widow's pension after he died. If you can get the pension file, its worth its weight in genealogy gold! I hired a researcher to copy one for me and it was well worth it for the info I received. Charles' service record is on Fold 3. Check your local library to see if they allow free access--mine does. If you need me to, I can download it for you. Message me to my inbox. Good luck in your research!

I would do some of the following. I have tried most of them with some results.

1. Go on line to Chattanooga Tenn. and check to see what kind of records you can dig up. You want to try and find out on the county level.

2. I have done this and it has worked. He probably took the slave owners name or he might not have. He possibly had a last name at 16. Find out the name of the brother and sister in Fort Scott Kansas. I would first try and find out by going to the internet and entering "Slave Owners name Molton/Moulton in 1841/1843 in Chattanooga, Tenn".
Then if the brother and sister are related to him .I would use there last name the same way.

3. I would look for Slave Schedules if you find the slave owner. If you know his birthday year. Then you would add 14 years to that and look for Slave Schedules that reflect a fourteen year old on them. If you are not familiar with them. They list as an example. One male, age, and if he were Black, Mulatto, and there is something else about race. That's about it. They were only valued as property and most kept good records.

4. I would concentrate very hard on Chattanooga and the surrounding area. He could have been sold off.

5. Check the Freemans Bureau. He might have had a savings with them.

6. Check to see if they have a record of him in the Union Army. He would have most likely been listed in one of many Colored troops in the union Army. He might have drawn a pension from there. If they gave pensions to Black troops or maybe there freedom.

Researching a former slave from TN - Charles Molton

I am looking for information on a former slave's family. I have his obituary and it states he was born in Hamilton Co, TN in 1841/1843 and ran away to participate in the Civil War. He ultimately ended up in Lancaster, Pennsylvania. I know slave research can be hard or excrutiatingly difficult. Nevertheless, am looking for the slave/plantation owner and possibly this slave's father. Full name of the former slave/freedman I'm researching is Charles Molton/Moulton. His obituary says he was "made" a slave in Chattanooga at age 16. His obituary doesn't list any parents or siblings by name, but says he had a sister & brother living in Fort Scott, KS, who after researching, appear to be a Jake/Jacob & Frances/Fanny Molton/Moulton. Can anyone help with my research? Any help will be greatly appreciated.

kboeds I see from Ancestry where an extensive genealogy of your family and Elijah has been done. I see where you made the conclusion of forty four years. Just like you said everything in his records list him as White as well as to his families and children. I saw the pictures od him and he appears to be white from them. He has some shadows from the sun on his face.

It appears the sun was about twelve o'clock or before. It is shining down and would cast shadows wherever there is a blockage of light as is the case in his wifes picture. The shadow is from the chin and jaws down. He has a typical beard which is straight and has a straight curl to it.

His genealogy has gone as far as you can take it as far as general information. I see where he rented his first farm and then he owned it or bought a farm. I think he was the type of person who might not have owned a farm before he was renting one or he might have a bad financial turn.

There is certain information that only you could find out being his relative. I am sure you did; but did you do a search in Tennessee for any real estate dealings. I don't think he would have listed that he was born in Tennessee if he didn't want anyone to find out; but he might have been bending the truth a little if he wanted to hide something and was born somewhere else.

Well enough of a lot of talk. I will go back to the drawing board and see what I can come up with.

I want to add this one point. There is supposedly a lot of well qualified organizations including Ancestry when it comes to DNA testing. I am very skeptical of anyone having such an important piece of information like that. I would think twice about anyone having a copy of that. I am sure you have thought about it. I just thought I would throw it out there.
Thank you Bearnut2, I have been thinking about spending the money on DNA testing and also that I may have to pay a professional to find the missing 43 years of my GG-Grandfathers life. My family history on my G-grandmothers side has proven to be quite interesting and the fact that her father seems to have first serviced at the age of 43 tells me that there is more interesting history out there. Just have to figure out how to find it.

Danny,

Although we disagree on distant ancestry determining one's current "race" I must admit that your willingness to apologize and make amends to the OP has changed entirely any misperceptions I had of you. It takes a big person to do what you did.

I,too, apologize to the OP for derailing his thread. I did delete one exchange as the response no longer fit the edited message it was responding to. I won't alter anything else as I believe it is a valid message, albeit not the answer the OP was looking for.

Kboeds--I hope you are able to find the answers you are seeking. One thing that may help is to take a dna test. Ancestry's test is good but you will have to download your raw data and upload it to gedmatch.com in order to determine if you possess any african segments. Conversely, you can take 23andme's test and the chromosome browser and Ancestry Composition will tell you if you have any African ancestry. If a white person tests and is found to have African segments then it is pretty conclusive that they have an African ancestor. Good luck in your search!
It is not up to a person. I don't care if they have lived Black, White, Green, Red, etc. It is about what is. Not what you want to be or what you think you are. It is about a red flower is a red flower. A white flower is a white flower. You can get a hybrid flower out of the two. That's science. You have a Black parent and a white parent. They produce multi racial children. That's a fact. How they live and what they call them selves doesn't matter. They are mixed.
The human factor can never take away from basic facts

I didn't omit this one; because I did not want to eliminate everything and leave w/out some explanation as to what I feel in ref. to what I had said and in answering another person.

When I came to your thread it was with the best of intentions. I had left a board where race was the issue. I saw your first statement in your thread " I am a white decedant ( I am sure you are saying descendant.) of a Great Grandfather who is a mulatto.

I took off from there in the wrong direction by giving my opinion about what you are and so forth, etc. It was wrong. The next part of your statement went on to ask the question you were seeking. That was what appears to be your main question. This is a fact.

It was the next statement that could open up anyone to add some discussion. It is according to who is reading it and what he feels about what you have written. You began to explain that he had if I understood you correctly. He had features that would make it appear that he was a man who was mixed or mulatto.

I thought you were wrong here and tried to explain why. That statement is broadly used and to me is wrong and I again started explaining my view point about it. I was wrong to a degree; because the thread is not about that.

Then someone else started adding a comment to the statement and it took it further from the basic question.

I have already taken too much time of the thread. I apologize; but your descendant If he is a mulatto. Is and was still great controversy into the history of the race question in some peoples mind. It is not limited to whites; but Blacks as well and many other races who bring up the same questions about there diverse mixtures.

I do apologize. The last thing is to take away from someone elses thread. I can get wordy at times as I am doing now. Take care and God Bless and God Speed. This has nothing to do with race and I would appreciate you not lecturing me or others on a post that I originated as to what constitutes what race we are or how we should be viewing ourselves.

All I want to know from my original post is (If my great-grandfather was the product of a mixed relationship between a Slave owner and a Slave how can I find that out and find my great grandfathers ancestry?)

The only reason race is of any issue is because records for those in slavery are very difficult to research.

If you are not able to assist me in ways of searching for my heritage as it pertains to slavery then you need not reply.
We are not talking about someone who has one black parent and one white parent nor even someone who has one black grandparent and three white grandparents--this is someone who has an unknown *possibly* mulatto ancestor. This person is NOT black or multiracial unless they wish to be. This is the same as a person who has been raised black all their lives, their parents were negro, their grandparents were colored and now that they've found a white ancestor or have european on their dna test, suddenly they want to be called "multiracial". Black in the USA does not mean you are 100% African any more than being White in the USA means you are 100% European. There is no PURE race--only what is perceived. This is why, like the American standards you mention, there were also standards that determined how much "black blood" a person could have and be considered "white."

I respect a person with one black parent and one parent's right to refer to themselves however they wish, but the reality is that society's perception does determine how you are treated. A man who identifies as multiracial will be just as likely to be pulled over by police as a man who identifies as black when driving his bmw through a high class predominantly white neighborhood. The po-po is not going to ask "Oh, is one of your parents white?" Ultimately it is up to each person to self-identify as they wish, but they're living in "la la land" if a brown skinned person thinks that having a white parent causes them to be perceived as anything other than "of color" in the USA.

Conversly, a person who looks white, who's parents look white, who has been raised as white, and has NO identifiable "African" features (whatever those are) is, for all intents and purposes, White. If he can drive his bmw through a predominately white high class neighborhood without a second glance; If he can enter a department store without being followed or watched; If he can walk pass a little old lady on the street without her clutching her handbag; It doesn't matter if he has 2 gr-gr-gr-grandparents who are Mulatto; He IS white. And he can be white and embrace his African ancestors and yet remain white. The two are not mutually exclusive.

And those "American Standards" you mention state that "free people of mixed race could have up to one-eighth or one-quarter African ancestry (depending on the state) and be considered legally white." [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/One-drop_rule]

Peace!

Sorry Dannyssmile but I must respectfully disagree with you. If the OP and his parents and grandparents have all self identified and are identified in the community and world at-large as White, then he/she is indeed White. He/she has African ancestry true but to call him/her black is pushing it.

Black or African American is more than just the color of your skin, it has to do with the culture and family you are raised in, how society perceives you, etc. There are MANY factors that make black folks black. I have several dna cousins that are 99% european and 1% african and they, their parents, their grandparents, have "been white" for decades, just because they have found 1% african dna or because a person has found an African or part african ancestor does not change who they are UNLESS they want it to. It should not be up to anyone, especially a perfect stranger, to re-define who a person is.

Does Lucious show up on the 1860 census? If not, that may indicate he was enslaved. If he does show up on the census in 1860, a good next step would be to try a FN registry (Free Negro Registry) for the county he may have lived in.

Another place to check would be the Freedman Bank records (http://search.ancestry.com/search/db.aspx?dbid=8755). The Bank asked names for parents/siblings/former owners, and other great identifying info.

Good luck

It's worth running the names though the Virginia Slave Database at http://unknownnolonger.vahistorical.org/

Also, don't forget that beginning in 1853, Virgina required owners to register the births of all slaves on their plantations. This list was complied across 5 (6??) volumes a few years ago and lists the name of the slave/mother/owner/location/date of birth. The title of the book is "Virginia Slave Births Index, 1853-1865." I am so sorry that I don't know the name of the editor/author. I copied the necessary pages for my family, but not the ISBN/author info :( Still, I've seen the compilation in libraries in RIC, NOVA and HR areas of Virginia. I really hope this helps and you find some success. FWIW, on the other side, once you get that planation/owner info, things get SO much easier.

If you saw him in the 1880 Census, did you look at the ages and birthplaces of the children in the household? By the way, your John Henderson was age 46 that year, so he was born in abt 1834. The oldest child was 21 years old born in Miss., the youngest was 3 years old born in Miss. The ages and birthplaces of the children tell you where the family was living during an at least 21 year period. This means that the family was living in Mississippi in 1859, during slavery times, and it is likely that is where the family was freed in 1865. What you need to do is, look for the family in Miss. in 1870, not always easy for a variety of reasons, some having to do with the fact that not all slaves had the same names in 1870 that they had by 1880, but at least you can try. See if you can locate any of the names who were old enough to have been in the h/h in 1870. Also, since both he & his wife were born in TN, it is likely they may have belonged to the same slaveholders, who may have relocated from TN to MS between 1834 and at least, by 1859. That means that you need to start studying the HENDERSON slaveowning families (using the 1860 and 1850 Slave Schedules) and checking for ones owning slaves the ages and genders of your HENDERSON family. While it isn't guaranteed that your ancestor's slaveowners were actually HENDERSONs because not all former slaves took their slaveowners surnames, it is a place to start. You also should start researching some of the HENDERSON slaveowning families just like you would your own, and try to locate records on them, such as following them through the census years, marriage & death records, and then checking for wills and estate or deed records that might show transactions involving the transfer of slaves, either through bringing slaves into a marriage, or inheriting slaves from a deceased member of a family. It's a lot of work researching slaves, but you've got to first pay attention to the info contained in the Census records, too.

Deloris

I know of another lady on facebook who is in the process of developing an online repository for slave data. Her name is Sharon Morgan and you can e-mail her at smorgan@ourblackancestry.com. Type "Slave Records" in the subject line. She has just partnered with a major genealogy player (not Ancestry) and things are starting to gain momentum. I know she would be very excited and grateful to accept any information you may have.

I was basically asking if this project is worth pursuing - would anyone even be interested, etc. Also, I wonder if anyone has already made a connection, or likely connection, between the slave owning Baskins (my relative/ancestors) and the African American Baskin families. If connections have already been made, I'd like to know about it, and if they haven't, maybe my research could help with that.
I still have to post the names and places here, of course. Been busy lately planning a reunion and writing up my research on the white Baskins...
Thanks, BTW for responding, and the links posted yesterday were great! Perhaps I could just post my documents to that AfriGeneas site...
Alicia

My Great my G G grandfather John Henderson was married to Chaney Versia/Versey/Vesey( so many different spellings on death certificates and 1880 census).
At the time of the 1880 census they were living in Robertson County, Hearne, TX . The family has since grew and spread across the country. I have checked ancestory.com and Family search and other sites that talk about slave records . I have hit a brick wall!
There are several options you might want to try, here are a couple.
You can check with the USGenWeb State and/or County sites of the location of interest to see if they are accepting wills, estate records, distribution of slaves; some locations have more than others but most of them do have something, either for the County sites or the Archives sites. Here is the link for the National sites where you can pick the State and then County you need:

http://www.usgenweb.org/

http://usgwarchives.net/

Afrigeneas.com has a Slave Data Collection which includes all sorts of materials for slavery research. Here is their page where you can look through some of the materials already on their site, and includes links to a form or email address to contribute to the site:

http://www.afrigeneas.com/slavedata/

Deloris
I have also come across information in probate and other records of slaves that I would like to share. The problem is where do I share this information?

I try to include it in notes in my tree but there has to be a better way. I just don't know what it is. If someone knows a good data base to contribute the information to, please advise me.

I don't know for sure that he was black. If he was bi-racial then I have no problem claiming the same. That is why I'm trying to find out more about him.

You will find him my family tree and he will show up in the family tree of my uncles widow. Her tree is private. If the one you found was born in 1850 or 1851 it is probably him. Oldest record I can find is 1894 when he married M.A Robinson.

Just wanted to confirm that this book was only published once and that was in 1941 (not 1951).

Thanks,
Jenifer
