A valuable new resource for slave data in
Georgia is now available online at
http://milledgeville.galileo.usg.edu/milledgeville/searchThis website was created by the Digital Library of
Georgia (DLG) and contains the complete available editions of eleven (11) Milledgeville
Georgia historic newspapers dating from 1808 thru 1922 (not all, but those that were printed within this time frame). At this site, you will have access to the names of thousands of African Americans who were enslaved. These African Americans were named to be sold, hired out or listed as runaways. The holders were also listed as well as the many counties within the state that placed advertisements in these newspapers. The advertisements have to do with sheriff sales, estate administrator sales, estate executor sales, runaways searched for, and runaways captured and jailed in various counties within the state of
Georgia and beyond. The site is free, but requires a free downloadable plug-in to view the pages (djVu). The pages load readily and a search feature is available. A researcher will have to adjust their searches. You can limit your search to a single newspaper title or a single year. You can further limit your search by a particular county or a particular name both slave and holder). You may have to experiment with the various search options to meet you personal needs. The
Georgia State Legislature mandated that all slave transactions in the state had to be advertised by law for certain periods of time in the official publications of the state which were headquartered in Milledgeville,
Georgia. This is a microfilm record. You may get lucky and find what you are searching for.
